Mike Moir has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=5695)

Latest Update: Final Image: Speak Master, Your Servant is listening.
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/5695/5695_1116381304_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/5695/5695_1116381304_large.jpg)

I guess they suggest a story should go with the entries so here is my bit about my image.

Image title: Speak Master, your servant is listening.

This Master is all powerful, he could force us to worship him but he doesn't.
He waits for us to come to him and when we do , he looks down on us and thinks "Well done, my good and faithful servant"

Just a note , some people who have seen this image were a little distracted by the bright light on the side of Jesus. A little explanation.
After Jesus died they pierced his side(and heart at the same time) with a lance and blood and water poured out , the light in my image is supposed to symbolise this water , you can see the wound at the top of the bright area of light. This water represents Sacramental life to the church , so this light ties Jesus to the church building and to the Servant. Just thought I would clarify

This is just a quick sketch with a bit of computer touch ups. I haven't figured out the layout of the sanctuary of the church, so that could change , but this is a basic idea of what I was looking for .

Here is another concept , similar idea to the first concept except a little less dramatic. I think I like the church idea as the architecture of the altar area is a little more interesting. Let me know any comments on which way I should go.

mmoir
03-24-2005, 10:31 PM
Hi Climax,
Yes , I should spend some more time with my sketches , once I narrow it down to which one concept to do I may do a more detailed sketch. I will be trying to play with composition and emotion for each image and see which image comes out the best . At least I have an idea where I want the image to go, I was struggling a bit to come up with an idea.

Mordalles

good idea, i like your concept. go with the 1st one. itll have a stronger effect.

artemesia66
03-24-2005, 11:58 PM
Hi, mike. it's a tough call between the two concepts. The first one has the promise of some really dramatic architecture, but i think the second one has the potential to be more emotive, and more expressive. personally i think i prefer the second one. i'll be watching to see whcih one you pick, and where you go with it... :)

ihamid
03-25-2005, 12:09 AM
hi there just introducing a new face :) ! those two concept sketches are good one with ambiance and power and the other with innocense and humblness.... how about a merge of the two can bring some suprising results ;) .......:deal: imo

I have decided to go with this concept , it is updated from the first version. This is roughly the viewpoint I am after for the final image. I will start modeling the sanctuary and model the figures last . This is just a quick modeling in Carrara and then using a mix of Toon and Realistic render settings. The guy is going to have arms this is just a quick model.
I still may do the other concept but I will do it in the 2d challenge as I need to learn how to draw in the computer better.

Hi there Mike, If you go with the church idea, I think that the first camera angle was better. As Virtuoso said it gave more drama and emotions. It was less personal maybe, but I liked it more than this one. Hope not to confuse you too much:)

Here is the latest update, I added the column to the top left corner change the stain glass window(arched top),added more curverd areas and the large cross. I just have to add things like tall altar candles, chair hanging lights . I also have to duplicate the complete left wall and place it on the right side. Now I either start texturing this or model the figures. Comments and crits appreciated.

Hey
jarvetu-thanks
arlutik- I am still playing with the lighting , we shall see .
keetmun- havent decided about the time of day , I just want some light to shine on the cross and somewhere close to the guy kneeling. I am thinking later in the day though.
Climax- once I found out what vitrals are , yes I will be adding stained glass to the existing window openings and may add another window below the existing window. I was thinking of adding a few statues on the large squared column to the left of the scene too.

great work so far Mike!

There is only one thing which I don't like. Bigger conttrast between the lighten and darken areas should be there... I think it would add a nice mood and a bit mysterious spirit.. now it's too bright. Also some volumentaric light would be a nice idea I think

ihamid
03-31-2005, 08:49 PM

Here is a close up of the stain glass window . This is just a quick hand painting I did of a stained glass window of an image I got off the web. It is not highly detailed but the final stain glass window in the final isn't that big so this should do. What do you think.

I added the stain glass window and changed the view a little , I raised the camera a little . I added the pews in the foreground, they are just dummy pews right now to see if the pews worked in the scene. I spent some more time trying to get a little better lighting. What do you guys think.

Hey Ace,
Here is the stain glass closeup you were looking for, the lightrays were done quickly in corel so there wasn't any volumetric lights yet. Also the tmap hasn't been uvmapped to the window so there is some gaps at the top.

mireneye
04-01-2005, 02:44 PM
You've cought a really Nice Mood already! Id suggest somehow giving lighting some more work with the final scene. Last time I was at chuch "Looong time ago" It really had a 'holy' feel to the lights if you know what I mean. Altho, its pretty much about what you want in the final image.

Best of luck.

Neeno
04-01-2005, 02:53 PM
i have to disagree although you would be playing with your lighting towards teh final composition... your lighting is fantastic.. just the way you have it set up from the beginning i could tell you knew exactly what you are doing and what your trying to achieve.. you dont want the lights standing out too much as i can see because then that would just take the focus off the servant. because the servant obviously has a significance to the theme.. great stuff dude keep it up

The stain glass looks good. Just one thing: I don't know if you were planning it or not, but stain glass affects the color of lightnthat shines through it greatly, and stainglass is also thicker (the ones I have seen atleast); maybe you can add thickness to the glass while adding the effect that stain glass has in real life (caustics?). Maybe making the picture color more vivid wouldn't hurt also. Just suggestions.

luckysevens
04-02-2005, 02:16 AM
Looking good, I think the stained glass is a great tuch, I agree with ace that it s seems like the light should get more color from it ( you seem to have it on the projection, but not on the volumetric light). Also the ambient light seems a little bright, most churches are meant to be a little darker inside so that the stained glass stands out and illuminates the room, I thinks its good the way it is, but playing with the contrast in the shadows could maybe make it a little more dramatic.

mmoir
04-02-2005, 03:43 AM
Thanks guys for the comments, I do want to make the stain glass look more like stain glass and I will look into some of the ideas you have given. The lighting is getting close to were I want it but I still want the lighting a little darker and more contrasting. I added some more furniture , but still have to do the pews in good. After this I will start modeling the figures.
I should have another update tomorrow.

I add too the column capitals, the tops and bottoms of the colummns are a different color. I added some more furniture and the pews too have changed . I have to put more emphasis on the guy kneeling as some of this has been lost. There is a bunch of other stuff I am going to add but I think I will start on the figure modeling.Let me know your comments and crits.

artemesia66
04-04-2005, 07:44 PM
mike, it's looking great. a very nice atmosphere and lighting (you already know that the light needs to be more coloured by the window). the only thing that strikes me is that the lighting really draws attention to itself and away from the figure and the cross. I wonder if you might want to think about a lighting strategy that emphasizes the connection between the cross and the kneeling figure. just my 2c.

Wow,Iliked the atmosphere and the lighting.I do not know what software you are using but in most of them you can connect the image shader to the spot light color so you can create the illussion of the ligh passing through the glass. If you will using mental ray(or vray)take the image and connect it to the ambient color ,of the material ,of a dome geometry that you will put above the scene. It will reflect the colors to the walls.

been watchin this progress .. lovely work ...i could see a little more haziness in the atmosphere, could be a personal thing though .. as i've always felt the air in a cathedral a little thick

wonderful stuff

yap, I agree with pigwater... I feel lack of some deeper spirit in this scene. Some atmospheric effects would make this picture live:) But this is to be done at the end, and for sure you have some ideas about it!

Hey ,
vdelanno- thanks for the comment
arturro/pigwater- I will try to get that heavier atmosphere later on.
s.dimis- I use Carrara studio for my modeling and rendering,I think I have it figured out but thanks for the tip.
Keetmun- I may do one more stain glass window below the current one, or a large iconic painting or something would go there instead.
Deryk- for the dove it is a default shader on it ,so yes I will delete the specular highlights. Thanks
artemesia66- I will try and fix the light issue, and will try and make a connection between the servant and the crucifix
J++ Dragon - I will look into but I think it is a side wall that is casting a shadow and the angle of the sun that makes it look strange. Thanks for pointing this out.
miketche- Hopefully I can get my characters to look good enough, my character for my GSO entry was my first real attempt at a complete character so I don't have lots of character modeling experience.
THanks for the comments guys.

hey, mike. your head has alot of character already. good stuff. a couple of things that strike me: his eyes look a bit big. you might try making a texture for the eyeball that simulates the proportion of an iris. i almost always make my eye openings too big at first, and putting an eye in them always makes it clear, and makes it easier to get them closer to the right size. Also, the volume of the cheek will be easier to get if you have an edgeloop that runs down from above the nostril to the chin. there's a pretty good tut here that shows good edge flow. it's for a pretty stylized female head, but i've used this topology for a couple of more realistic heads (including the one in my entry).

not a big problem tho, seriously if u just scale them down they would be perfect. jsut those fiddly proportions.. nice model tho

Tilitel/artemesia66- yes the eyes are too big, something I will have to resize a bit. I will play with the proportions some more then move onto the body. Thanks for the tips and the link guys.

You certainlay have a nice well-rounded skill-set. I feel that the arms and the torso need some adjusment in porportion. The torso feels long, the arms feel short. The hands usually rotate down to the point where they would meet a pocket.

Very nice work, keep it up.

Thanks for the comments ,
pixelkeg- I will look at the torso some more , the hands aren't really modeled yet so I think that is why the arms look short. I will try and rotate the hands down a bit.
Virtuoso- I still have to model the complete hands , thanks for the comments.
Chino- Once the hand gets modeled then I will weld the two halves together to get rid of the seam.

I have modeled the feet so they are done , have to do the hands still.

Hi Mike,

Good to see how it's coming along - I like the composition of the whole thing and the idea of light streaming through the windows. Is the plan to still have a crucifix on the altar or not?

Would like to see more variation of tone through the image - darker shadows and higher highlights perhaps....

Haven't seen this for a while and it's really progressing well! The athmosphere lighting and mood of the curchroom is terrific. Only crit might be that I feel that the light casted on and surrounding the cross might be a bit to hard, it kind of pops out a bit. Are you planning on adding some volumetric effects? A slight amount of dust in the light might do the trick.

Really like this one, keep going

hey mmoir nice progress man... i like that lighting.. very worm matches the concept... ur character looks good, but i think he'll benifit more if u give more attention to his anatomy. like the pactoral muscle is out of place and the packs are less in number. Hi Mike,
To me, stained glass projecting on the cross idea must be improved..And another thing came to my eye, the stained glass is very very small such a high church...To the ribbed beams, it maybe a cathedral!!! So why don't you heighten and widen the stained glass!!! There is large enough area there for scaling the stained glass, because the wall is not a load bearing wall there...Coloring the cross with the stained glass projection seems good to me!!!

Looking real nice......You have it all under control quite nicely Mike......You know my only "Suggestion"......Would be to take out the molding below the stain glass window...and then extend the window down vertically.......double it's vertical height.....This will really expand the beauty and overall presence.....also real good suggestion by j++dragon.....I think you are pretty close....looking real nice overall......Keep it up as you are....:arteest:

Here is the Master Model posed , I welded the two halves of my previous model then move, rotated the polygons until I got this pose. I didn't rig the character. the Jesus model is coming along, i think you might need to define the forms a little bit more but it's looking good. With the realistic or painted look, i think if the form is fine enough then it will have a certain level of life, for the shading i think it should look artifical but slightly real, like how some ceramic doll could look lively. I hope i'm making sense. :)

Jesus and Mary models both looks very good - will fit into your room perfectly. I think painted wood would be the obvious choice for Jesus since your whole scene is so realistic. But on the other hand a more "alive" texture could create an interesting tension... I'm sure you figure it out :)

hey, this is very nice, totally different from death a destrucition, or semi naked girls around, i like it, and the lighting is really nice, i dont know if you could bring more contrast, try to check some images of renassaince churches, and see how they played with the light to bring your attention to the important places inside, i am from mexico, and there are a lot of churches there, some of them really beautifull, and i have been always fascinated by the light and the peace you can feel there, try to get the same feeling, and you will have an awesome image!

Here is another update , I added more accent strips to break up the plain color on the walls.
I added the lighting effects in postwork, although I am still going to take a stab at it in 3d .
This is close to what the final image should be like .
Is it to dark at the top of the image? I darkened the image in post but I think I overdid it.
Anyways I think I am getting close to done.

Mike amazing job you did, wow really nice, the only thing that bugs me is your volumetric light it looks more like strings then sun rays maybe if you made them bigger it would help, othewise very impressive work. :applause:

Thank for the comments guys, Arlutik, I am still playing with or learning how to do the light rays in post . If you know of any links that would be helpful , let me know.
Right now I am trying to rendering the volumetric light in 3d as a separate layer , I can't render this as a separate layer in the program I am using so I have to try and work around it. I am using Carrara , if anyone knows how to do this in carrara fire away , I am all ears.

Jr Braz,
Yes , the images you posted is what I thought you meant, but I was thinking this a little to o much. I wanted a calmer and confident looking servant. I guess I compromised a little.
Thanks again for your comments as I like this pose better

I think you right ...This way is better. In actual version, is looking more confident, like the man is in a conversation with God ... and not a desperate prayer ...

Really nice comp you have here. Nice placement, modeling, everything! I agree that this pose is better than your first. You could add a little more "calm" to the servant by tilting his head slightly. This would make him look like he's casually looking up at his master. ANyway, excellent work! :bounce:

Hey coming together nice, i think the pose you got now is quite good, very subtle and handled well. All the details in your models are great too. Probably add some atmosphereic light passes to give more focus on the servant or the master.

Well, Here is the final image. I did the volumetric lighting in 3d instead of postwork this time. I would have never done this if it wasn't for this challenge, so it pushed me to try something new. I added a light sphere around the main lights in the scene too.
I will try and think up of a bit of a story to go with my title of "Speak Master, your Servant is listening" but I think it is self explanatory.
Good luck everyone in finishing off their entries.
