Well. The original Concept is This well dressed, gentlemanly monkey (Mr. Fuzzy Knuckles) who is the boss and he is the brains and boss of the duo. I hate the term slave, but I'll call him a lackey who is pretty docile until given an order by Mr. Fuzzy Knuckles.

Important Note: Mr. Fuzzy Knuckles always refers to himself in the 1st person.

Tonight will begin model on Mr. Fuzzy Knuckles. Update in the morning before work. Promise!

I'm very excited and motivated for this challenge!

I wanted to bounce an Idea of you guys.

What if Brutus was a Boxer and Mr. Fuzzy Knucles was his Boxing promoter. I see the master servant relationship in that hierarchy. Think Don King and any of his less well known boxers. What do you guys think?

ace4016
03-22-2005, 08:29 PM
Looking pretty good, I like the concept. I think thats a perfect relationship of master and servant: boxer and promoter. From your concept sketch, it looks like his lips shouldn't go across his face that much, kind of takes up the stuck-up look he has in the concept sketch, but maybe it was intentional. Just keep Mr. Fuzzy Knuckles in a suit, its always funny to see a monkey in a suit.

I really like the idea of the boxer/promoter relationship, i would suggest going with that. Keep up the good modeling! :)

The Boxer promoter relationship is definitely staying. The freelance gig might not start for a week or 2 so I have to BUST ASS on this one for now and get as much done as I can. I work full time now (at a boring office job) so I only get from 7 - I pass out to get any work done on this. When the freelance gig starts up I'm not sure if I'll have more time or less time because of it.

Thanks for the support it really helps stay motivated. Sorry for no update last night, emergency trip to Philly until 11:30.

Yeah! Watch out GQ.

Mr Fuzzy's look is very clean and manicured(for a monkey). Almost impeccalbe to contrast Brutus once I get started on him. I I am going to add some thickness to his vest so it won't look paper thin.

So what do you guys think so far?

Thanks guys!

Last night I started on the sleeves. I'm having trouble with the armpit area, but I'll figure it out. I spent an hour googling ref pics.

Boxiness in shirt and pants: Yeah I am going to have a little, but I want every to feel almost tailored for him. So it's going to be like an old school tailored suit.

I really appreciate the input and support guys. The freelance doesn't start for a few weeks so I want to keep a full tank of steam.

Great start mate, cant wait to see hair on the little fella

Thanks guys.

I don't have a real hair option for XSI, other than just modeling it in there. Unless I want to spend a few grand for advanced. I'm saving the hair for last, since I'm still trying to figure out the best way to go about it. If I can swing it, I might get zbrush and sculpt it in a little better, but who knows.

More to come.

Thanks Pig water.

I'm am buiding this model to be rigged and going to make a facial rig so I can mess around with different facial expressions. I don't know if I want him to be evil or smug or nice or very stern, but I want to be able to create a whole range. Also I want to be able to animte him in the future, so after the contest i want to focus on a good custom full rig for him and Brutus.

I think when I start Brutus you guy will be very happy with him. I took a lot of inspiration from Neversong's Vova Character (he make very clean meshes and always does super nice characters). I'm not making it like his but I like his approach to his meshes.

Any way i really want to go balls out for this contest, I really think of it as a proving ground.

Geta-ve & Alex:

THanks guys, thats an easy enough fix. I'll make the corrections later today I have a 1 year old's birthday party to go to @ CHUCKY CHEESE!

It's going to be a blast, but later I hope to make a lot of progress on this.

The lighting was just something I through in there super quick, but what do you guys think about the slight blueish tint on this character? It's starting to grow on me for the mood it the final image.

I was looking into how the hand should kind of look. I think it need to be a little short he\'s more of a chimp so I will change the shape of the hand a bit, but I think I\'m hand with the length of the thumb.

Nice update bro,

Let's see...well since this guy is a chimp or sorta a chimp, what would proably sell it more is if he was beefed up just a little in the chest and you shortened his legs. Think about the commercials that have those chimps working in an office enviroment wearing shirts and ties. Overall the modeling is very nice nothing wrong there, you defintely know what your doing, but try experimenting with "chimp" like porportions to sell it....bow his legs etc.

or

Maybe this is how you want it to look and im fine with that too, just keep the fire burning :)

Thanks. I was going to bow his legs when I rigged him. I figured it would be easire to get a nice deformation, but I do know what you mean.

Having seen this image I'd agree that the thumb/ hand proportions are corect.

I'd also agree that you could change the shape. Maybe make the knuckles on of the middle and ring finger higher than the other knuckles.

Great job though. I can't wait to see more.

Yeah his face sort of just came to me tonight. I just pushed out the polys from Mr. Fuzzy Knuckles so that they would look like they belong in the same world. I didn't want them to look like they were done by two different artists.

Hi dmonk. I like the idea and how your modeling is going so far:) Just one thing: I think Mr.Fuzzy Knuckles' arms look a bit too much like smoothed boxes (there are creases between the top and side for example that make it look like a box) unless you are going for a bit more of a cartoony look, then they could be good. Other then that I think he's looking awesome. Good luck:thumbsup:

He is human, He is going to be a boxer and the monkey is the boxing promoter. I think in many cases the Boxing promoter and boxer relationship kind of works that way.

Yeah, Boxer and boxing promoter. It was the first thing I thought of that was sort of out of box for this topic. I'm not exactly sure how I want to depict the relationship. Do they hate each other? Do they have a mutual respect? Is one taking advantage of the other?

Anyone have any tips on making a character look sweaty in XSI?

Sweaty without looking like shiny plastic.

jmBoekestein
04-01-2005, 05:54 PM
XSI has nodes right, at the end of your shader use a node to source specular/reflection from a greyscale and use the same greyscale to composite it over the underlying shader. Nevere tried it though but I'm using the same method(somewhat more complex though)on >>this (http://img209.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img209&image=skinwiplarge8dr.jpg)<<

you was wondering what kind of relationship the two could have: I have an indea! You could depict an argument between them, the small guy could be screaming his brains out, and the all mighty boxer could be all sad and with his shoulders down.... a drama

I am going to rig him up, as soon as I am mhappy with it. Hopefully I can balance him out at that point. I tend to do that a lot when I model a character, I hope I can break that habit.

I love working in XSI, for me it just makes sense and feels very natural. I feel like in every new task I take on I get a little better at it and more comfortable.

I'm having a blast on this project. I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible and focus on a dynamic final image.

Great work so far dmonk. There's something about the proportions that is bothering me though. I think mr boxer's head is just a little too small for such a large frame, regardless of size and muscle weight. It's not so much a case of realism as it is of believability.

this is a very clean style, very nice.

and here it comes, the but.
but,i guess its too clean and organized, the models are too organized.
they should be put to the extremes.

like the bane pic, they took something and exagerated it.
there is no reason to fear mess in the model, after you make a good base
some mess would only help ,both your sanity and your model

now it would be just my luck that ive written all this and when i post it there will
be an error and it would dissapear

Erilaz: I made the head small in relationship to the body, simply because I liked it. I looked at some old warner brother cartoons and all the brutish big guys always had the samller heads. For me it was working so I stuck with, but I see what your saying and thanks.

Dogbite:How would you suggest I push the character to the extreme and what specifically about it is too organized? Let me know and I'll work on it.

For these characters I want to go simple. Sort of the old school cartoons I watched growing up. I didn't want to add all the rippled muscles and veins and pores etc etc. Hopefully I can make this work and make an impression on you guys.

That being said, I do appreciate the criticism and always take the comments into consideration.

Thanks for taking the time to do that.

I agree the bacan come out a bit.

As for everything else. I felt like if I did those things it kind of wouldn't be my character anymore.
Things I took into consideration while designing the character.

Most massively big, atletic guys won't have perfect 6 packs. Look at the worlds strongest man competitions. Those guys are huge, but many of them have a bit of a gut.

There are a ton of characters whose head is lost in their shoulders and have absolutely no neck. I just wanted to go in a different direction.

I don't know how effective a boxer he would be if his upper torso was that much wider than his abdomen. It also would be a little bit too much like the justice league and batman big guy designs.

I'm not necessarily fighting your suggestions, I would just say we have a difference of tastes.

Thanks though.:D

Hi dmonk, cool characters so far, you could add to the WB aspect of the big fella by nixing his neck, dropping his head down further into his chest so his shoulder muscles sorta go into or around his head...

idea for the "beefy update" since it is a toon, also if youre going to blowup neck, enlarge his jaw and mouth a bit, so those relations then stay in proportion. also, on a big guy, that looks sort of "heroic"... very cool progress mate, just keep on rocking!!!:thumbsup:

I have done some minor changes to the neck and back. I am at work so I can't post and update. I 'm modeling the boxing ring tonight and sketching out the final composition for my entry. I'm not sure I need to model Mr. Fuzzy Knuckles feet for the final scene, but I do want a complete character. For his hair I am going to use cards with transparency maps, I hope it turns out ok since I've never done it before. Sorry for the slow down with updates, just very busy with the real world. All of these great entries and input from you guys is keeping me motivated though.

hi,
seems to be a good rigging. But just a word about the posing: if the man is supposed to be tired after his fight, his body seems too much rigid. When you are tired, you can't take this position. In my opinion, you should let it be pressed on the cords , in a more softened position.

good luck! :)

dmonk
04-19-2005, 04:28 PM
It's not that he's necessarilly tired. The second character is going to be on his right side screaming at him and jumping on the ropes.

I will loosen up the pose a bit though.

Great idea! I think the key to making this work is to get the body language of the characters just right. How about having the monkey guy really yelling & pointing at the boxer (possibly in a more cartoony monkey-like pose), who could be glancing back at him sideways sheepishly.

Just changed the camera and angle. I'm running out of time so this will pretty much be the final. Have to render big version and make some final small fixes and cross my fingers. i like this character so I plan on re-rigging him and Mr. Fuzzy Knuckles for the future.

Fingers crossed.
I hope you guys dig it.

Next update will be final.

Hey dmonk,
Congratulations with final image! Actually I'd work more on spectators (maybe just blured "illusion" of crowd) but in genereal looks cool. Good boxer's modelling!

Hey dmonk,

Thanks!

I actually experimented with a crowd using blurred images and Stand in models. Nothing worked out and I'm embarrassed to admit that making the lighting subtle on the crowd was a big pain in the butt. The more i kept staring at this the more I just wanted a simple image. So many people have these super detailed amazing works, that just blew me away with every update. I tend to like simplicity. That being said I will revisit this character in the future.

I have a few other characters in my head that I need to get out, plus freelance work, plus my full time day job, plus Quality time with my wife and family (I have a new niece on the way!). So I had to make a executive decision and rap this project up for the time being.

nice work, dmonk:thumbsup:.. but it would look better if there were some more texture on the characters.. lighting also could be made more dramatic to reflect the thoughts/moods of the characters.

Yeah, Lighting and texturing aren't my strong suits, but they are something I'm working on.

GJ  . If you ever find time, maybe you can add in the bleachers, without the people.

Thanks guy!

I've been staring at my final and there are tons of things I could improve. i'm starting another personal project and I'm going to reuse these models and re design them a bit.

All of the comments and suggestions realy helped me push myself on this one even though I only have a few hours a week to work on my own personal stuff.

I'll try to keep getting better with every new project!

There are so many excellent entries in this contest!
