solipsism 03-21-2005, 07:40 PM just working on this for mechanical animals theme in a series. all photoshop.
before i do all the highlites and reflections i paused.
not happy with the composition (its traced over a grasshopper photo pretty exactly)
im thinking of tilting the front big leg up, removing the leaf behind the head to balance better or changing leaf completely, and not sure about leaving the wing as natural, was hoping to find a nice solar battery image, but no luck. whatcha think

Sweet!
Dude that 'hopper looks wicked. In fact i frikken' love it! ;D
With regrard to the composition, the most obvious problem is that the focus is not correct.
Since you have the little bugger almost completely done, i would suggest using a different leaf image for the background. One thats in focus.
I'm not much of a photographer, but the trick is that if your final "photograph" was taken close up then, depending on the camera lens' focal charactistics, either both the leaf and the hopper would be in focus, or both out of focus.
Obviously since you want the little jumpin' insectoid to be in focus, the easiest thing i can think of is :
1. getting/creating a photograph of leaves the way you want with at least the foreground in focus
2. place the grasshopper in there
3. choose light source and add appropriate lighting and shadows to make the 'hopper look "in place"
4. <optional> Blur out the background, if necessary, so the focus is on the foreground.

Again, the grasshopper itself looks amazing.
Where can i see the rest of your "pets" ?

didnt do any of the green reflections or the shadow work yet, about half done I would say.
as far as focus, there is a real grasshopper underneath that i was going to match the focus of once all the chroming was done.

Holy sweet mother of pearl. Do you have any tutorials on your work dude? That HAS to be CG. I'm not kidding. Get the leaf right and you have yourself a CGTALK award winner, hands down.

Seems like you used distorted photos to assemble the grasshopper. It would look more interesting if you painted your lighting in a more organized and dynamic fashion. In fact, it might be easier to paint the whole thing instead of stitching it together. I've tried something similar once and I wasn't happy with the results, but if you think you can get this looking right, I wish you good luck.
