Hey, another animator in training here. This is, excluding playing with the controls to get familair with them, my first character animation. Being critical on my own work, I have some sense of where I've gone wrong and right, but I'd really love to get some critiques from the more experienced animators here.

Here's the link. (http://www.ingramworks.com/animations/stance_final.mov)
Around 4.6 megs, quicktime format

Thanks for any comments, critiques or just taking the time to view it. :)

Big thanks to Jorge Baldeon for providing such a great rig.

Hi,

I can't see too much wrong with it. I'm a little confused as to what he's actually doing though. Is there a reason that his arms have to be out like that, it's a little unnatural. The same with his legs, it looks as if he's squatting. :hmm:

Regarding the animation, there's a few points where his arms stop moving, spoiling the fluid motion, check out keithlango.com and his new tutorial on moving holds, exactly what your trying to do there.

Just a quick point on lighting, you've got a nasty shadow being cast over the eyes, which makes it hard to see what's going on under there. Especially important as this piece involves the character looking at his hand.

Keep up the good work,

stu

He's a neat model and looks well rigged. He'd be great for animating some short stuff to for your showreel. At the moment the animation is pretty short, and yeah unmotivated. Looks to me like he's come into existance when we first see him and he's looking at himself going "ok, I have arms.. big hands, they're made up of cubes... what other parts of me are there?" but it's pretty short.

I'd like to see him animated performing some actions. You could start with the basics like lifting a heavy cube, or something. or "Waiting". But yeah, so far it looks promising.

Thanks for the crits, guys :)

stu_vaz: Very true on the arm movement, one of the things bugging me about it. Thanks for the tip on the tutorial. As for what he's doing, Kizza's pretty much right, he's mostly moving just to move. Looking and getting a feel for his body, which was what I was basically doing. Not a very motivated thing, I admit. My next practice run will have more substance to it I hope. Also, very true on the lighting. On this, I wasn't worried about his eyes being readable as the model had no pupils, either modeled or textured, but I went ahead and adjusted the mesh to add them, so the next run will take them into consideration.

Kizza: It is short, as I get more comfortable I'll be working on longer tests. I was actually planning the next test to be the "picking up the heavy thing" or "pushing the heavy thing" :)

Thanks again, gotta agree with all your points and really appreciate you taking time to help me out :D
