This is a superb piece. I like the pen and ink style, however I think it needs more contrast.

best,

:buttrock:great work man...i can already imagine how long it was rendered and how many poly quad/tris...tsk tsk...i also like the pen and ink look...but it really do need some more contrast...or make it more kinda reddish...

As a zbrush-artist myself I can only congratulate you to the brilliant piece of art you showed.

And I don't agree to the colour thing. It is definitely more consequent in black and white as opposed to toned in any other colour: you can have your imagination colour the picture for you.

The only critique I've got is the title! Why Mars? Mars is known to be dusty and red and deserted. Not luscious, jungle-like and almost amazonian... I guess, if you chose another planet not so "known" and stereotyped by us artists, no one would have complained about the black and white impression either...

This piece is very well done. I like the b&w approach but echo ashakarc in that a touch more contrast would be welcome. I can image a piece by Edgar Rice Burroughs evoking the imge you have created.
Well done.

thanks for al your comments, i see what some of you are talking about with the contrast,
i used the cavity shaderwhen rendering this, but when i scaled the image and compressed it alot od the details got washed out quite a bit.
heres a regular gray render with a few more bats and some riders.
and hey i know mars is a red desert!, in my dreams though i would like to picture it more of the burroughs ideal...much more interesting, lol

Although there are no colors in this picture, but the amazing details and the composition still made the picture a GREAT work!

Great work. I love that old fashioned romantic notion of mars as some sort of jungle world filled with dinosaurs and such. It really does capture that feel of 50's era sci-fi pulp illustration. 5 stars.

Love the pen and ink style. Great work! Instead of contrast maybe thicken the lines in the foreground objects - but I don't know Zbrush and if you can do that.

Very nice display of what can be done with ZBrush. I would love to see a screen shot, as it is hard to believe it is actually a 2.5 D image. As stated, I can't imagine what the poly count would be. It must be insane! I too agree that some contrast is needed. The eyes get sort of lost in all that you have going on in the image. The key to getting the viewer to see the point you wish to make is to have a main focal point that stands out from the rest of the image in a subtle way. Maybe consider making some of the areas a solid gray, as a contrast to the overall outline style, so that you can "lead" the viewer's eyes to where you want. The thumb you posted is more in line with the contrast issue, it looks way better.
Awsome job!

great work, heaps of detail, love the exotic/alient jungle feel to it. Think the ink style render you used really makes it stand out and gives it a dreamlike quality. When looking at grey version though it is easier to make out the forms due to higher contrast. Would be cool if could possibly combine the 2. anyway totally awesome :scream: love the perodactyl/bat creatures

Lately there has been alot of diversity amongst work on CGTalk, and yours is no exception. You might get a little criticism from some individuals, for your choice of pen and ink rendering... but who cares.

In the same way, you'll get others like myself, who think that this is one aspect of your piece that makes it even more intruiging. I hope people look at the great imagery and narrative within what you are creating, and don't fault you for being creative and different in your final solution.

Lovely piece, I thoroughly enjoyed looking at it. :)

Really great! they are SO wrong about contrast: the grays and softer tones provide DEPTH OF FIELD! otherwise it would be flat! Also someone asked why dreams of Mars because mars is all dusty and red... why else would it be called DREAMS of mars? :scream:

Hi, it is such a great a piece of art!
Congratulations.
I also love this ink & pen style, but since you are not adding colors I agree with some people here you need a lil bit more contrast on the different elements of the scene.
Anyway, it is so good... It is a long time I dont see a 'ink&pen style' like this.

Congratulations,

It's fabulous work, a bit busy though and I agree that it needs more contrast to bring the flying creatures out a bit more. I keep looking at the bridge on the left and they get lost in all that detail.

BTW, this is fantasy, not reality, we all know that Mars is red and lifeless but that is not what he's referencing.

Wonderful job and I think the title goes perfectly. I'm a old school sci-fi reader and it totally reminds me of the old Princess of Mars illustrations in that series.

Great work... wonderful detail... needs a little contrast... would love to see it on cheap paperback paper because I'm sure it would illustrate a great story! :)

Zbrush? I'm confused now.

Might be nice if the image looked aged or discoloured in some way though.:)
