This is my first WIP, and my first post here at CGtalk. Hello, hello...

Anyhow, I wanted to have a go at doing a low-poly model of one of my D&D characters I've been playing recently. I really want to focus on making some good textures for this guy, especially taking my time when it comes to the unwrapping, because I have a tendency to just use TLUnwrap or some other plugin to unwrap my models, and my laziness is always exercised at the expense of my texture maps.

I've got the head modeled at the moment. I'm reaching for a slightly "heroic" (warhammer, warcraft, etc) style, so I don't have to worry about the proportions so much. I went ahead and modeled the mouth open in case I want to do facial animation later on. (oh, I'm using Max 4.2 btw =/, poor high school student w/o a real job, so full tilt max7 will have to wait till I can get it at art college)

Here's my preliminary sketch of the head:

And the full body sketch (pay no attention to the econ notes in the corner):

Please crit away (even though there's not much there), I need all the help I can get. The only thing that's bothering me particularily atm is the chin. Either it needs another edge loop or I need to play with the smoothing groups more...

Torso updates, not the best model. The hands still need work, I may do fingers later, or just cut em off and build the gauntlets seperate. The shoulders are what I'm most worried about atm, not sure they'll deform ok during animation.

I think you need to do some tuts before you go any further dude. Its a good try, but you need to learn the basics of modeling, and learn how to create a fluent mesh.

Please try and do a tut before this, Joan of Arc is a GOOD one, i am sure everyone esle can offer some tuts as well :)

You could try this tutorial: link (http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/benmathis/benmathis_1.asp) I think it is a good one. Hope the pros agree with me.:)

I think I agree with you. I feel like I'm getting the shapes I want but my meshes are always disasters and I don't really have any method... I've seen that Ben Mathis tutorial before but haven't read it. I'll give it a thorough read and start over. :)

Ok, I started over, and I think this new torso looks a lot better so far, but I've managed to make myself a few (4 / half of the torso, since the one side is just instanced) of tri's and I can't figure out how to get rid of em... or if I really to. Any input here would be much appreciated. They are all on the shoulder/neck area two on the front, two on the back. I marked the back ones on the photo. I still need to do a lot of work on it, the small of his back looks way to uncontoured atm.

Anyhow, is this a step in the right direction?

Still haven't addressed those tris... But I started adding legs.

I think the ankles need work. Actually, I'm sure the ankles need work... But I think its coming along much nicer than before.

Gunna add some loops to the shoulders and get going on the arms... Then I can go back and touch up before I do the head.

EDIT:

Added Arms. I have no need, or the desire to skin individual fingers. On to touch ups and the head...

I use this site for anatomy reference a lot:
http://www.figuredrawings.com/

It's good for any type of anatomy art, not just 3d.

Anyhew, keep at it. I really like your concept art. He has a striking resemblance to Powers Booth. Especially the way he looks in DEAD WOOD on HBO.

Wow, that's a very handy webpage.

I really wanted him to be very wild west reminiscent, just as a break from traditional high fantasy heroes, so I'm glad he evokes that image.

I think I might dial back on this project a touch though to get rolling on a 2d entry for Master/Servant.
