I was looking at a LW tut on normal mapping and decided to d/l the C4D demo of paranormal to see what i could do.. well no manula so i fumbled around and got some results

here is the LW mesh at 85000 polys

http://www.black-and-white-to-color.com/stuff/nm2.jpg

here is a the low poly mesh 512 polys and paranormal

http://www.black-and-white-to-color.com/stuff/nm1.jpg

here is the base mesh

http://www.black-and-white-to-color.com/stuff/nm3.jpg

Now on animating ( doing a spin) i notice that i lost most of the deatil on his.. well.. backside- it became very dark. This is only if i animate him, yet if i animate the camera moving around this is not a problem... the nomal map is green on the front and blue on the back, this may well have something to do with the lights used to make it.. these are green and blue !!

Here is the ani

775 kb DivX (http://www.black-and-white-to-color.com/stuff/nm1.avi)

i am still beginning to get to grips with normal mapping so i am not sure how well it can be used in CA, it certainly is faster than displacement and apperas to give better results

Hello paulselhi !!

Well done !!

How u have created the Normal Map ?

Can u post it ?

U have assigned the normal map to the Bump Channel and Normal Mapper of Paranormal?

Tnx in advance for the answer !! ;)

Looking like a very good example of normal mapping indeed. What did you use to generate the actual normal map? I made a half-assed experiment with nVidia Melody once, but I only got some rather strange results.

It sounds like the normal map was calculated in world space rather than object, or tangent, space. You can do this out of ZBrush too, and you avoid the UV seam problem, but as you note the normal map then seems to incorporate the original scene position/lighting.

Sorry chaps.. none of my work here i "simply" downloaded a vid tut on LW normal mapping from simplylightwave.com. The vid also comes with all the files

In LW there is a free set of plugins that create and render normal maps, the map was made in object spave yet in C4D paranormal i had to set it to world space

The tut is very straightforward ( if you are into LW) and the files transfer well to c4d though you have to change the maping which for some reason comes in as flat and not uvw

Mr Braun..yes bump chanel and Paranormal set to world space

We desperately need a Cinema native solution for Normal Mapping. Either that or frigging Dr. Pepper from that German developer! Where is it?!?

I requested normal mapping through Maxon's feature request section on their site, and suggested they just buy Dr. Pepper and imlement it into C4d directly. The guy who made Dr. pepper also did Flash Ex for Cinema 4d, so perhaps he would be oprn to that again?

However the problem isn't how manipulate the normal map into cinema but how create it ! ;)

For example, zbrush don't make a normal map with the grey background ! ;)
