View Full Version : Low Poly Devil troll
newbis 03-17-2005, 09:01 AM Hello
Here is a low poly Devil troll, I created for a MMORPG game. It is 1300 faces.
I have done the modeling in Max and texturing in Photoshop.
I used Mouse for texturing since I don't have any digital tablet.
The idea is that I need some critics to know how much it sucks.

hey newbis.
Ok, heres my critique, you seem to have good porportions on the character, as it seems to fit the style that you appear to be approcing, now, the rest of the critique is solely based off this singuler image, but if you want further critiques, then I sugest you post your wireframe and UV/ texture pages. It seems like your polys are mostly allocated in the head and body, leaveing your arms and legs VERY boxy, re-alocate some polys to those arms and legs in order to round them out a bit. Also, the arms and legs realy seem to look like tooth pics. Now I know that this is a styalised character, but you might want to concider exagerating the hands and feet. This whould do many things. One, it will take away the overall look of haveing the characters arms and legs looking twiggy. Also, it will bring attention to just how small the arms and legs are, further pushing how diminutive he is. For good referance on body type, look at gollum. Post more pics, get more critiques. Good luck.

Like Shadow Slayer said, a wireframe and UV/texture sheet would definitely help with critiquing, as well as a more complete description of what this model is for or what you were trying to accomplish with this character. For example, what type or style of game is it? Fantasy, realistic, styleized, cartoony etc. Next, what is this characters story? Is he an evil troll, a cowardly troll, is he magical? Where does he live? In the mountains, or a swamp, the desert? My point is, have a concept or an idea when you begin your character, and share that info when you post a model. Then folks can give you some more accurate feedback and maybe some helpful ideas to improve it. My next long winded point is to use referance. Say you decide he is gonna be a big fat evil mountain troll. Well, hop on google and find a bunch of pictures of fat people, trolls, monsters, maybe even mountain goats, since they're designed to live in the mountains anyway. Use nature as a guide if possible. It'll seem more convincing, even when it's fantasy. If possible, use some character templates to model from in your software app. A front and side view. Drawings work great, if you cant draw, you could always just cut/paste/hack together some templates using pictures you find on the net. As for your model, it doesn't suck. It's not great, but it's fundamentally sound at least. 1300 tris seems like alot for that model. Looks like it could have been 600 or so. The texture is pretty flat. Could use more color variation (read up on color theory/painting) , more details, like warts, scars etc. Anatomy, in both the texture and the topology of the model, could be better. No big deal though. The next model you finish will be better. Hope my sleep deprived ramblings help. Keep it up.

Thanx a lot "fattkid" and shadow slayer.
U right about the polycount and texturing. As I am new to texturing I don't have much idea of basic texturing.Unwrapping is the first problem. I think my approach to unwrapping is wrong. I didn't post the Texture image here because I thought I would post that on Texturing thread.
Your critics were already very helpfull.
Anyway here is the texture and the model from three different side. Bump and specular map is disabled here.

Thanx.

I think your UV layout is perfectly fine for this character. And you said that your not all that experianced at textures?
Ok I've got the best / fastest textureing/ photoshop painting tutorial for you here:
Here it is: "Get a tablet!"
Trust me once you get one, you won't be able to see how you did all that work without one.
