View Full Version : The Queen of hearts and her muses(nudity)! Daily Sketch gone nuts!!!
jmBoekestein 03-16-2005, 08:04 PM Hi all,
I was very happy about the result for this Daily Sketch entry so I thought I'd bring this one to completion. I really loved the way the women turned out. Especially the 2 muses, the left one is death and the right one hiding is furtility btw.
I am going for realism, but going for realism like in photorealism is madness. So I just mean that I want it to be very realistic in volumes and hopefully lighting, mostly recognisable I guess. I'll keep the latest here in this post but WIPs will stay up anyway, for if you want to backtrack my steps somehow.

colourscheme so far. :D
PS: Some people have pointed out to me that somehow my pictures look a like. I personnally think they only say that when I make nudes, because more than fifty percent that I make is not even human(oid). But as a warning, this is just my taste for women. It's just nature so give it a rest. (this does not include remarks about sexism, I try to keep an open mind!!!)

Nice work, I'm excited to see where this goes. It's incredibly refreshing to see some work on here that inlcudes females with modest sized breasts!
The girl on our furthest right looks a little bit scrunched in there, maybe it's just me?

"But as a warning, this is just my taste for women"
not bad taste id say =]
i feel however that maybe the upper left arm of the central woman is too long. it keeps distracting me.
and is the girl on the right mean to be futility or fertility, instead of furtility, which as far as i know isnt a word? just need to clear that up ;]
id be wary with hair colours, as they all have long hair and if they are all brunettes or close enough colours it can point out similarities, which what what i understand, they are there to represent different ideas.

Your avatar frightens me, good sir. 4th level unibrowed elven ranger casts +5 gaze of nausea.
jmBoekestein
03-18-2005, 06:02 AM
peddy,
thanks for the observation. And I try but my english isn't all that. I know what everything means when I hear it, I learnt it all from watching movies. She is supposed to be fertility!:D
I think also that the arm is not anatomicaly correct, I think that it looks too long because it's straight and pointing downwards. I should change it. Haven't decided on hair colours, but the overall idea was to give the middle one very dark and silky hair, the one on the left will get slightly brighter and more filthy and wild hair. But I don't know about fertility yet, maybe a lighter tone blending in more with the skintone on the middle one. I think I should give them all names, this is getting confusing, lol.
peachstapler!
you're right, I was wondering about what to do with it! Maybe I'll go with this guys face:

lol i like ur current avatar, looks really nice ;) abt your women, it looks great at the moment. are you planning on colouring it?
jmBoekestein
03-18-2005, 10:51 AM
Yep, colouring should be done. I think it's too flat just as lines. If I'm going to shade it I might as well do it in colour. Or try at least.
cuppacam
03-18-2005, 11:49 AM
Like this. You have to put colour. Only thing, the girl on the left's breast looks a bit off. Anatomically that is. Otherwise, I have no objection to naked or semi-naked women!! Bring this to life doctor frankenstein!!!
jmBoekestein
03-19-2005, 02:13 PM
Hello again,
I had a little time so I worked on the breasts. I felt they looked to much like silicones, I'm not at all a fan of such alterations, I'd rather see piercings and tattoo's. Tell me which is better and if they look real. The lines are a bit scruffy, but imagine her in less intense and cooler light than the middle and right one, she'll be an ominous symbol of death awaiting.

03-20-2005, 07:21 AM
OK,
Some people have given me some advice, breasts on the left girl are too wide apart and her hair is to much/big on the on-screen left side. The rest seems to be fine, so I'll be working on that.

Thanks guys, it will be some time though. With the challenge going only 2 months I'll be hard pressed for time.
Nice drawings and good taste in women! :)
The left girls breasts are realistically apart if her shoulders are thrown backwards, I think. Of course, you could make them larger... within reason :) Why don't you submit your work to the aphrodisia (http://www.aphrodisiashowcase.com) contest (deadline april 20)? Oh, and left girl's dagger needs a holster, and mind the cloth too, as it can be an important focal point. I think real references are the best way to go.
Oh, and your avatar is a bit unsettling, but people will remember it!

Hana-chan
03-31-2005, 05:26 PM
i don't know...the women with the mask's hair on the left looks too pointy to me. and the female in the middle's arm looks too stiff, maby add some bending in it or something. i love the expressions though! but i would like to see more of the hips on the women in the mask, but that's just me.
jmBoekestein
04-01-2005, 07:07 AM
I'm considering making them all nude again. That was the original design, just enough skin but not too much. I f I enter them for that competition They'll have to be at the right aspectratio. So I'll first check that out and then nudge them around a bit. More hips seems a good idea, it would also give more easy hints as to her pose.
And I was wondering when someone would say something about the stiff arm, I'll see what I can do.
Thanks forthe support and comments, it helps a lot I'll tell you.

04-01-2005, 07:26 AM
I noticed the other image is a quite large one.
So here's a smaller one and without clothes. Tell me what you think, please. For instance, is the hand that comes from behind her hip too busy or in the wrong place? It seems a little hard to read to me, but I lose track.
http://img110.exs.cx/img110/4484/ds280tarotqueenofhearts5small7.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us/)
G' day jmBoekestein, absolutely gorgeous women
I think you' re going to read it better with colour, light, shading, etc. Also the bottom of the pic is very close to that ' hands being busy ' area!
Did you have a reference or are they outta yer head?
Looking forward to seeing it finished :bounce:
jmBoekestein
04-01-2005, 01:02 PM
Straight outta my head. Thanks!
I think I agree with the shading bringing more out. I think that if I do some thorough testing on colours I should be able to get them to be distinguishable. Updates soon I hope.

jmBoekestein

i like the girls a lot. I'm still trying to get used to drawing on my tablet, but you are great at it. This is just a suggestion, but I think it would look great if it were painted realistic instead of stylized. :) also, i think a tattoo on the masked one would had a little something, maybe coming down from her shoulders and then flowing in between her breast.... but what do i know i can't paint crap:shrug:
jmBoekestein
04-02-2005, 09:39 AM
I can't paint crap either to be honest.
I just felt this deserved a little more attention from me than a "hello it's done".
I was hoping to do it realistically, But that will take me considerable effort and time so it might be slow progress. Hopefully I don't forget about it after or during the challenge. Thanks guys!

This sketch is coming along very well, congrats on creating some sexy looking women.
And now the critique; I think the reason the middle girl's arm looks odd is the fact that her shoulder is pulled up so high, if you lowered that it probably wouldnt look so stiff. Continuing with arms, the girl on the left doesn't seem to have any, yes I know they're just out of shot, but it looks odd none the less. Perhaps she should have her hand on her hips, a strong, defiant pose would probably work for her.
I actually like this without the clothes, the material was confusing and hard to read and here the hands make it more interesting...and erotic :)
The left girl's mask could perhaps be widened a little, I think her eyes would be just slightly further apart than what the mask shows at the moment.
In terms of your concept, there's definately three distinct personalities here, but perhaps some symbolism would help to show who these people are supposed to be. Although you've done this well with the girl on the left already.
I think this could look really good when finished, do you have any ideas for a background at this point?
About the middle girl's right arm, it's kinda odd to me that only a few fingers appear and not the rest of the arm. I would try a different position, for example resting her hand on her thigh, or reaching back to caress the hidden girl!
Is it just me, or is it getting hot in here?

The wizzard, hmm...sounds very good. Beets hooking street corners to get through college.
Mr Grinch, excellent suggestions, I think I'll try and follow you up onall of them except the shoulder, I like the naughtyness of it. As far as for a background I had envisioned a ver dark blue deasturated tone with light from the girls bleeeding into the haze. Very high contrast but I think it fits them. And I'm not to keen on trying to symbolise something through the background here, I sorta see them as a vision one might be having in halfdreams state. (and what a fine night it was.:hmm:)
Dr. Fx, and hana-chan, caressing it is. In the end I was just hopnig it got suggested probably, at least I can blame you guys now.

Hey, jmBoekestein, nice work on those last updates. I like how your linework shows just enough to suggest volume. No wasted detail. My sketches tend to be all over the place but if I want a more finished look I'll throw it on a light table and trace (dirty word) out the main lines. So I can appreciate how you get more with less.
jmBoekestein
04-12-2005, 03:16 PM
Thanks AllenAtl!:D
The trick I mainly use is to slightly overlap lines and make them thicker on sides of the volumes where shadows would be. And ofcourse accentuation of form. Hope this helps.
Cheers!

C Ya!
Blackgeni,
I started this one real quick on a 1200 x 1600, canvas. Later when I wanted smaller tighter lines I just upscaled everything to 2400 x 3200. But somewhere along the line I saved a downscaled version so some of the lines are actually more smirky than I'd like. But they're good enough I think.

I think you should greyscale the original image and lay it over your color as a multiply layer so we can really see both of them working together. I think the depth would look great if you really added some core shadow in there.
Then maybe you can throw in a colored light from one of the sides that casts on them so you can really see some depth. The light could maybe be alittle behind the front character and maybe next too the middle one and the third girl peeking around the corner maybe has is on her front. Just an idea.
Oh, I got another idea! Actually two! so when your done with that you could put a rim light on them to really pop them out of that ole computer screen of yours and when your done with that. Then you can, well shoot I forgot, oh I remember. Try using colors that you wouldn't think are in skin like purple and green. Really low opacities. It really helps skin look like skin, remember human flesh is pretty transparent and when blood doesn't have oxygen it's blue.
It will look great you will see. Just keep it really subtle and add all kinds of colors. Just go crazy!?
neokinesis
05-14-2005, 10:01 AM
So right after I wrote that whole post I happen to find a picture with all kinds of color on skin. Although this piece if very stylized, step back from you computer like 7 feet and look at the image. It really says what I was trying to explain.
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=239975&goto=nextnewest
There is the link, and no it's not one of mine. Try to think of colors as values, almost as if you had your monitor in black and white. It really does something to the image.

05-14-2005, 02:47 PM
Hey thanks! I was thinking about putting in some candle lit templish background that would give some more deoth maybe. And I just got photoshop cs2 on my computer, so that's somethning for colourblending in other hues. That didn't work well in painter, what should have been purple went completely green and such, ah hell, whatever. Anyway, getting hands on with photoshop cs2 right this instant and going to see what I can do with it. Thanks for the link, actuyally explains a lot. I want them real fleshy like though. Really jumpnig out as alive, stupid for a first go but eho knows, I migth even pull it off.

nice thread jmBoekestein.
Im always interested in ppl doing figures....love to see the process and of course the end result.
Yeah i think you can try to overlay the outlines ...just to see the girls! ehheheh
And Sacha is here too !
jmBoekestein
05-19-2005, 05:18 PM
hmm, I didn't actually used the outlines for drawing the figures, so they don't match up. Bummer, but I'm getting to know photoshop now instead of painter. Who knows what's next.
TheFirstAngel
05-20-2005, 05:52 PM
lol, i don't know painter yet. if its photoshop, use them first steeps you made as colorpalette and overpaint your outlines with the same colors you used on your coloring start. make sure you keep a copy of your outlines on a seperate layer to see where the lines are running.
you might use the "multiply mode" on the toplayer with the outlines, just to see the contours. later, you wont need em anymore... hope that made sense. :D keep it up JanMark!
jmBoekestein
05-20-2005, 06:39 PM
Thanks Sacha! Makes perfect sense, mostly I leave my outlines on top, because I'm not good enough at detailing yet, so I use the outlines to cheat :D. But these should be worked out fully!!!

I'm glad your daily sketch went wild. This is looking great. I can't really find anything that bugs me about it,but I'm assuming it's still pretty early in the game. I do find the figure on the far right looks cramped in there, but depending on how you render her it could work fine. Right now, the entire image is in the same tone,so it's hard to visualize where your'e going with it. Shadowy figure? Whatever it is, I'm really looking forward to watching this unfold. I think it's a terrific way to learn. eh?

Thanks Adriela! I think I'll try and make her skin more saturated and radiant then the one in the middle. That should make her pop a bit more. I'm not so excpereinced, and it's a perfect learning experience!
But...there's a huge problem now...even worse than my rather lazy attitude towards my own works... MY computer is broken!!! I'm doomed now, the love of my life has left me. I really need a hug... I'm so goddamn poor I can't even afford toilet paper, let a lone extra computer parts.
:surprised..you're not happy with my earwax statues? I put a lot of energy in those you know.

I felt like I was done with it, I guess it felt insulted because it slammed shut on me. I'm on the downstairs computer, usually preoccupied by other family members than me.

well, umm... u could always peek inside the downstairs computer if u could find
the parts u need, take the parts to your machine and then claim the downstairs
computer went weirdly broken and that they should take it to maintenence ..?

when working with colors, I tend to start with dark muted colors and work to light. learned it from Digital_bobert. He does the same

Yes, but I wasn't up to the point that I was going to make a reel out of it though. I posted most of what I had somewhat completed though. I can always work from that, maybe I'll learn to work faster in catching up heh;).
I have my nymph model saved as a draft in my e-mail on a server :D, and on the school hd here, so that one's going to be finished no matter what. :wise: Unless someone manages to crash the gmail server.

Ouch, I am really sorry to hear that. We've been going through our own little "one crisis after another" out here; and I had hoped that you had been able to find someone who could run a diagnostic check on the drive, and rescue your data files, as can sometimes be done.

This is the kind of lesson that you only learn when it happen to you. I know, I lost months of work on my master thesis when windows screwed up on me (that's why I moved to mac). Since then I do backups...
If you have the money, a nice alternative is to use 3 HD. 2 of 150megs in RAID-0 for speed and one of 300gig to backup the entire drives.
I think one of the worst thing when an HD crash is losing all the bookmarks, emails, and other stuff that you dont think of at that moment but will in a few months, like a file with the birthday of all family and friends (and girlfriend...), this was a killer for me!

Ooo! I completely forgot about updates... I recovered my hd!!! :D
YAY!!!
Turns out the first powersupply fried, then I got a spare from a friend which promptly stopped working too so I bought a new hd, and figured it would work. Well... that didn't work either and there weren't any options left so I bought a cheap powersupplyy, 'cheap' mind you, and voila.
Maybe some updates soon... still uhm... working on my painting skills .

gogogo! :bounce:
one idea: if you are working on something really beautiful as this it can be stunning sometimes.. i mean.. one has this breathtaking picture in mind and goes like.. oh no i can not do this and that.. because it looks so beautiful one doesn´t want to "destroy" it somehow.. one sits there and looks at it and doesn´t find the will to "work" on it (with all the ugly phases that work (nearly always) goes through.. you know what i mean?
to break free from the laming "it-has-to-be-beautiful" thought it can be really helpful to paint something ugly and old and not so nice looking.. (like an old witch or something like that..) one can concentrate on the technique and isn´t bothered by the painful thought of destroying what should be the most beautiful picture ever.. (<-- i´m talking about me here.. :)) just an idea.. keep going!!!
and update!!! :bounce:
jmBoekestein
08-18-2005, 12:40 AM
yeah and yeah... lol
And thanks Dunkelgold! I think that would really do the trick... I felt exactly like that when smudging paint the wrong direction.
I think I'll go do that as soon as I wrap up some things that need taking care of. It can be such a drag to not see where to go when the image is so definitely burnt onto my eye. :D
Big thanks! :wip:

ha! so funny..Benita beat me to it.
I was about to pretty much post the same..about being afraid to waste or destroy something that you think is coming along nicely.
But who am I to talk..I am too sissy to actually post my progresses and wips here anyway 0_o
And for what it's worth. Sometimes but only sometimes, it's good to take your time ;)
