View Full Version : wip - another head attempt
capone_adam 03-16-2005, 06:52 AM So, I'm trying to model a head...in a quite stylized manner but as always I have trouble doing the back of the head, neck and jawline. This is my 5th head model so you'd think I would of sussed it by now but no.
I know the topology isn't perfect but is it near acceptable?, for a game character (not too strict about limits...aiming for between 3-5000)?
Be harsh if needed, I never get offended.
oh, incase it helps...the character is a very skinny/boney oldish man

Some general observations:
The cheekbones should be defined on the "exterior" of his face, currently it looks like he doesnt have any, also the eyes are a bit too close together (usually you should be able to fit an eye between the two) but since its a stylized head.
You have a lot of polys around the mouth, yet they dont seem to define the features as well as they could. I think if you study some wires (and pics from real people) you could easily fix the problem areas.
I think what potentially making it look odd is the neck angle.
Unless he's a hunch-back the base of the neck should be rooted more towards the body.
Then there would be less hassle on making the back of the head look good, I think.
nice form.

Tried to correct is, how is this going now? (sorry, just changed hosts and lost my previous example)...
My most annoying problem is always getting the jaw bone right...no matter how many times I look at flats it never sinks in. Does anyone know where I can download a file to load into 3D max so I can examine it better?

Not a bad start so far. I'm not too sure how stylised you want it and in what fashion, do you have any reference as to what you'd like the outcome to resemble?
So far my crits would be;
-Extend the back of the skull out, it'll make it closer in shape to a real person's head and it should also give you that bit more room to play with your jawline.
-His eyes seem too wide. Try squashing in the top of his head and stretching out the bottom (from the front view), make it a bit more cuboid, this should allow you to pull in the eyes and should also help with your jawline. If you're going for the old man look, it's helpful to drop stuff down, so he'd have pretty large bags under his eyes and his cheeks wouldn't be so firm around the mouth.
-There's not such a jut in at the back of the skull/neck (feel your own neck and see :P).

Huge thanks for the advice Arch,
My concept is more a mood thing rather than a template and something I am not wanting to show unless I am sure I can pull this off (it has a creative 'gimmick' to it)...generally my vision is that of a old boney guy, definatly stylized with dynamic skull parts slightly coming through into the face. As you can see I have used a reference, that is all it is...I'm not specifically trying to make it look like the reference if you know what I mean.
Calling it a night, because I'm doing that thing where you tweak like mad and start losing the original form. I think I've used some of your crits well, especially in front and side view but I'm still having problems with the general shape in perspective. Oh well...will try again tomorrow...

Thats it, need to move on now...might spend a hour more but need to get moving on with the body tomorrow. I think its ALOT better...but still bad...important thing is that it is better than my last attempt, I don't think you can learn this by tweaking the same model...just need to practice on different heads.

Wasn't sure if to start a new thread since this is now becoming a full character project...
Here is some progress shots, originally I was aiming to make him look really skinny/anorexic but somehow he became quite muscular:shrug: I will probably use texturing to show rib cage etc...I did start modeling it but its a bit daft modeling rib cage for a gamemodel I think.
