So here's my first attempt at a gun. It will attach to my character's suit on the back...thus supporting the heavy weight (plus my character will be fairly large).

This is the first time ANY of my personal work has been posted anywhere...so don't attack all at once :D

Hey
Looking cool, though one thing that i got cought on was the arm.
It looks a tad fragile for all those guns :)
maybe biff it up a tad?

besides that, looking jolly

Batmanuel
02-12-2002, 09:28 PM
Yeah, I'm thinking it needs a little support there too. I'll beef it up here in a bit.

Thanks.

Okay, I added a bit to the arm section of the gun.

Only problem now is getting my character to look comfortable with it.

So...where is your character?:)

Batmanuel
02-13-2002, 12:21 AM
He's on the way. I'm hoping to have something roughed in shortly here.

Batmanuel

So here's a rough version of my characters' torso and arms. The legs, head, and waist are still undecided upon. There will also be body armor.

I've added some legs and hands to this guy now. I'm having trouble visualizing what this guys waste is going to look like. I know it'll be part of a suit, but I'm just not sure what direction to take. Any help would be nice.

http://alshaheen.net/artists/batmanuel/back_legs.jpg

http://alshaheen.net/artists/batmanuel/front_legs.jpg

I know that the arms look a little long (so do the hands), but it's a style I was trying out. Haven't decided if I like it or not.

Batmanuel
02-14-2002, 02:34 AM
Sorry, I meant waist, not waste. I don't need to visualize his waste :p

Here's just a quick update.

Ok, so I've not received much response to my character. No problem. I'll just assume that he wasn't interesting enough to comment on. This happens. So now it's back to the basics. I'm re-inventing my character and taking away the fancy gun. He'll have a bow, a sword, and maybe a little technology (besides his filtration helmet).

Here's a VERY quick sketch of what he'll look like:

http://alshaheen.net/artists/batmanuel/bow.jpg

If this guy isn't interesting either, let me know cause I'd hate to model him and not get any feedback again.

Thanks,

Batmanuel

I wouldn't scrap what you had at all. If you want my suggestions here they are:

Keep the chest and arms they look really cool.

Make the legs much bigger than the upper half (in keeping with stylized vs. realistic proportions. Also add in more detail/variety like you have in the upper half.

Keep the head gear stuff but re-work the head itself to make it an alien not human looking. Keep with the same style as the chest and arms.

Keep the gun too. Adjust the supports and everything else after you get it on the character. Then you can figure out if it logistically makes sense or not as far as weight, balance, strength, etc.

Add very cool armor, mask, accesories, etc. but keep the focus on the cool alien design. Overall I think it has great potential!

Lastly, don't get discouraged if a bunch of people don't reply to your posts. There's tons of sweet artwork on the site and most people just browse it. It's not that they don't like your character so don't take it personally!

Just my two cents worth.

Batmanuel

Thanks Yem Yam.

Yeah, I like the chest and arms quite a bit too. The head was just kind of thrown in there for some visual feedback. I was hoping someone would say "hey, the head could be cool if you did this...). So I'm thinking that maybe I'll combine the mask from my sketch with my original guy and possibly incorporate the current head gear with it.

I'm also looking at some sweet armor at the moment.

Oh, your character is really stunning. I love the borg feel to it. The textures are really fantastic too. I've found that I love to model with Subdivisions (Maya 4.0) yet when it comes to texturing Sub-D's, it's a bit of a nightmare for me. I can always do a convert to poly's, but it's still a daunting task to texture.

Thanks again :D

A quick update here. I've decided to go with YemYam's suggestion and keep going on my original character.

Here's his bat utility belt:D

Have a good weekend everyone.

YemYam
02-22-2002, 10:09 PM
It's looking good, I like the belt. Before you get too far into the accesories though I'd finish out the body. That way you won't have to re-adjust anything if the proportions of the body change. Look forward to more!

Yeah, good thinking Yem Yam.

I think this character has great potential, keep on keepin on.

Batmanuel
02-23-2002, 07:27 AM
Thanks for the advice YemYam

Yeah, I should fill in the rest of his body first. I'm still kicking around ideas for his head. His legs will be mostly covered in armor.

Thanks,
Batmanuel

Thanks Cerberus. I'm hoping to post some progress later on today. His legs and boots are on the operating table right now.

Challenge ends soon.......starting to feel the pressure!!

btw, I really dig your character. Looks like you've put a lot of time into him.

I've just started working on the head. I went in a different direction from when I first started. Thought this one might flow a little better with the feel of my guy.

Hope you dig it.

Looking pretty good Bat, although I think the waist area needs something ... not sure what though. It kind of looks like he's wearing a girls bathing suit bottom ... which is scary. Be sure to add some nice detail into the face too, it's coming along nicely.

Arlend

NICE!

it definatly does flow better, its looking very good, big improvements.

Batmanuel
03-02-2002, 12:21 AM
Hahahaha....yeah, looks like he's got a little bikini action going on YemYam. Still need to work out the little details...but like you said earlier-get the main parts of the form in first, then go after the details. His face will have a mask on it, so I won't need to model much in the mouth region. I'm currently working on the eyes. Gotta love Sub-D surfaces.

Thanks Arlend.

more to come...

Yikes, very neat character. Maybe itz just me but your character seems like a protoss/zerg/cyborg mix which is a arwsome combination. (haha once again maybe itz just me.. being a starcraft freak and all) Nice character can't wait to see him with his gun.....

Batmanuel
03-02-2002, 12:52 AM
Thanks DarkSy! He's a mixture of a lot of things really, but I'm not sure what Starcraft is. Hopefully it's something cool.

Hope to get a mask on him before the end of the day.

Just a really minor update on the mask and a little more detail on the face. It'll have a lot more going on, but it's time for a beer!!!

Smooth mask! I like the look of it. Maybe a little bit of detail on the surface would be kewl but of course the sleek look is arwsome too(with texture and all). Can you please post a mesh shot. thanx Would be kewl to learn from you.

P.S the blood on the horn is a great touch....

Batmanuel
03-02-2002, 03:10 AM
Thanks for the feedback DarkSy:D

Here's two quick meshes for you. The head is a single Subdivision Surface, the mask is also. The horns are seperate NURBS surfaces.

I don't know if these will help you or not, but hopefully they might.

Thanx great help. I find it really educational to see how real artist/modelers who are artist =), go about making the shape of characters. Lovely work. (actually I was being inconsiderate since itz almost deadline and still ask you for mesh) but your work is just too compelling. You got my vote!

I am using 3ds but since seeing your art and with maya PLE maybe I will give it a whirl.

DarkSy,

Thanks for the kind words. I haven't used Max yet, but from what I've seen in just this competition alone, it's pretty damn powerful once you learn it. The Maya PLE is a nice move forward for Alias|Wavefront, but take a look at the watermark on it. It's actually in the viewports when you're trying to work. Personally this would drive me crazy if I were just starting to learn Maya. But hey, free is free. Why not give it a shot?

So much detail in him, itz dazzling. But imho it looks like he is wearing a bathing suit =) a two piecer. (although it does kinda look fitting on him, if I weren't trying to study all the curves I woulden't had find it odd) And again IMHO, the gun seem kinda wierd attach/placed where it is now... maybe itz just the angle of the render, but it seem kinda hanging in a non-comfortable pose.
Sweet model, can't wait to see the texture on it!!

Batmanuel
03-05-2002, 01:32 AM
Yeah, the gun's just kinda hangin' out right now. It'll be repositioned when I rig him up for posing. Can't seem to come up with anything for the waist area right now. You and YemYam are right though, it does need a little something to get rid of the bikini look. Maybe a nice chainmail kilt.

I'll be hard pressed to texture him the way that I'd like to before the contest ends....but I'll try. Right now I'm working on his back pack, face mask, and and neck region. I'll post something in a little bit here.

Thanks for the input :D

I still have a bit of work to do on this guy. I'm hoping that the entries aren't due til 5:00 on the 8th.

He'll have either a sword or a flamethrower in his right hand/arm. The textures still need some work, but I'm quickly running out of time.

Let me know of any "quick" changes I can make. Sorry there's no back view right now.

Thanks DarkSy. I'm a little dissapointed that I let myself run out of time and not texture it the way I would have liked to. Oh well, it was fun to make....I haven't done any character modeling since college. The tools are MUCH better now :)
