You can buy educational version of max for less than $700.

The main news for me is that they've fixed the bug that cause problems at UV seams when generating tangent normal maps.
By the looks of it the DX9 shaders should be a bit more predictable as well.

So far I've found a huge performance gain in dealing with imports from Pro/E and AutoCAD Inventor. Before SP1 anytime you would move the viewport at all the model would regen each slight movement (even with Adaptive Degradation on)...now it waits till final position is reached before regenerating.
This alone makes me extremely happy!

Any other reviews/comments on SP1 yet?
Any major/minor problems?
I rather you guys be the guinea pigs. ;)

You could always get a one year student license for $150. This (http://www.studica.com/discreet/) is about as cheap as you'll get it.

I have tested SP1 for a few days here. It seems to be better than without it.
turboSmooth finally shows the selections which is a great improvement. It still has some obvious bugs of course, the hidden faces still do'nt display correctly which is annoying.
I get errors here, but they do seem less common. maxScript feels more stable too.

Flawless importing of Reaction Controlled Objects!!! I've died and gone to rigging heaven! :P
Now they just need to add an Across variable in the Parameter Editor.
