"FROM EARTH TO THE MOON" PRODUCTION DESING

By

Roberto Ortiz

You task today is to desing elements that could be used in a visualization of a trip from "FROM EARTH TO THE MOON".

These elements will be posted on the FXWARS Forum (http://www.cgtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=139) so
the VFX artists can use them as guidelines/inspiration.

You can go on of multiple routes with your desings

Realistic or Fantastic.
Historical Missions (American/ Russian), Prosoposed (Lunox) or Fantasy

We need:

Moon Lander
Space Shuttles
Moon Bases
Storyboards
Thanks.

ah humm.. Well it took me 3 months to do GrandSpaceOpera entry and this is somewhat similar subject. VERY hard indeed, but here is a 40 minutes of work.

Cant really do battle with nasa engineers who have spend their lifetime on doing cool gadgets..
Hope it is vaguelly usefull for anyone.

*edit... Added second sketch! 30min one.. I like it more... But not much off a concept for ships.

I'm afraid I don't exactly get it... So today's not a sketch, but kinduva essay board with ideas of designs of diverse separate elements for the topic From Earth to Moon that others might find inspiring ?
If so, cool :p

I dunno, this seems complex for a daily sketch...

Are you looking for pre-viz stuff? or orthographic stuff for each of the 4 catigories? I can see this being part of the month and a half contest, but not something I could put out in a couple of hours...

...but thats just my take on it.

Great pictures everyone, I really like your perspective Daw, good work.
Mine could use a lot more work but this is speed painting, and I wanted to limit it to 3 hours. Anyway, I wanted to create a sketchy look. Especially a "Feng Zhu" look. Don’t ask me about that ugly triangular thigy at the top: I didn’t have time to change it.
3 hours, Photoshop. My first ever conecept painting.

@Falcor_ Thanxs... the storyboard took an hour and 30 minutes and I went and had a look at what the FXwars was about. The passenger shuttle took about 30 minutes. I hope I got it close to what they are looking for...

@Squibbit Thanx for the nice comment :)

@coCoKNIght Sure is a canguru....hehe.... its the QUANTAS flying Kangaroo.

@Art2 LOL .... :applause: of course that would solve the problem of overcrowded prisons....Thanx

@gordonm Thanx :)

@daw Thanx I thought a storyboard was the best solution

My startings on this... got this highly original  Trifel City , built around a magnetized
rail spacegun that shoots the shuttles into space. The shuttle design itself is pretty much the same as nowadays, the spacegun just makes their takeoff easier.
The shuttles start from the lower city so its a good mile and a half frictionless magnetized
rail catapult boost for them.

Swizzle
03-16-2005, 08:36 PM
Squibbit, wouldn't it be more practical to do something that goes along the surface and is only slightly inclined? I realize that this is for something imaginary, but the energy cost could be kept waaaaay down by going on a low orbit trajectory launched from the surface at a nearly horizontal angle. If it was long enough you could even have it protrude from the Moon in a straight line kinda like sticking a skewer to a ball, then you wouldn't even have to go very fast to achieve a decent orbit. They used something like that in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress to launch rocks at Earth and later to launch shuttles to the Moon from Earth.

I dunno, swizzle stick ... they do launch em straight upwards even now, don't they?

I don't know too much about physics tho ... would be fun to delve deeper into the
subject sometime..Well, right now they have to launch everything vertically because nobody (well, nobody with the resources) is interested in doing anything like building a several-kilometer-long space launcher thing. If we ever build bases on the moon, then it would be very wise to spend that extra few billion and build a giant railgun that points towards Earth or some good point in orbit of the moon.

Anyways, here's my stab at doing a horizontal version of Squibbit's launching device. I think the vertical version looks much cooler than mine, though. I spent about two hours playing with the design, and I'm still not very happy. Maybe I'll post something better tonight. ~2 hours, Photoshop, Graphire3 (I love my new toy!).

Squibbitt: Awesome idea. I think the fact it's a living city makes it good. Would love to see a more detail drawing with the water falls and thangs. Really inspired by that. Ok, I'll stop...

Swizzle stick: I like this idea too. I picture something like a modern Minas Tirith. with the track running above it.

Allright, still nothing original really... just depicting this scenario ... Humans have built a
huge spacestation that can build spaceships in space. The station also serves as a waypoint to most Earth/Moon/Solar system traffic and houses transport shuttles,
cargo containers belonging to all sorts of companies, people and organizations.

Our shuttle passes the station as it doesn't on this trip have to visit there.

On the left is the magnificient Thingamajik, first human spaceship built in space.
This ship cannot enter Earths atmosphere , it's a space only ship , built around
the most powerful engine created by man.

It is the sole guardian entity of the whole solar system.

Jasel
03-19-2005, 02:09 PM
Thank you very much Sogan and Squibbit :) Oh, and on the subject of shooting straight up vertically or along a slanted railway: If you shoot slanted, you still have to exert the same amount of work against the gravitational pull as if you shoot vertically, but the losses due to atmospheric friction would be higher due to the prolongued flight time. You want to abandon the atmosphere as soon as possible, and that's why it's better to shoot straight upwards (of course, you have to change the inclination after a couple of minutes of flight if you want to achieve a low earth orbit, for example). Anyway, your sketches are great, Squibbit. Is Thingamajik some kind of finnish word? Or is it a word game?
And Sogan, I really like your ship design, it's very loose and dynamic, though I find it a little "alien"... was that your intention?

@element5: Don't deprive us of more of your sketches just because you host is full! That would be so unfair! There's always Imageshack, it works very good. Take a look at my signature for the URL.

@Is-boset: Very nice images, we can see you've put a lot of work into them. A big hello to my landspeople!

hey jasel , one scottish girl i know when she encounters something
she doesn't quite understand often calls such stuff thingamajik or
something of the like. thing-of-magic , thingamajik, u know, heh.
so i had some trouble coming up with a proper name for the ship
and decided just to call it that :)

jånnis, I started both sketches during a lunch break, one on thursday
and on on friday. I finished the pics after work and I guess it took about
2- 2.5 hours per pic

Posted this on the effects forum, but decided it would probably do no harm to
post it here too. I've got the whole story done to the
landing , but haven't yet sketched it out.

It takes place in imagined future where space flights are more commonplace. A minor
shipping company is handling an operation where prisoners are sent to moon to serve
life sentence. The company uses extremely cheap materials and recycles everything.
The pod where the prisoners travel in becomes their home in the moon , where it is attached
to a larger prison complex.
