First off I'd like to say hello, and tell the 2D board how much I hate you hehe.... I found CgTalk a few weeks ago when looking to find some help on going into 3d and stumbled upon this section. About 2 weeks ago I had little interest in 2D CG paintings, but that all changed when I came here and saw the talent.

Id just like to let you know that now I spend more time in the 2d section then the 3d, had to go out and get a 6x8 intuos2 last sunday, and now (much like when doing 3d) look at everything as if it had brushstrokes. Thanks alot!!

So like I saids this is my intro to the forum. Some background on me is that for as long as I can remember I wanted to draw, and did. I failed all my HS classes except for the art ones, and took drawing 1-2-3, wc painting and b/w photog. Once I got my first computer, and PS 3.5 all that changed though. I just got an AS degree in multimedia - digital media opt., which is basically graphic design ( ummmm about 85% )with web design, director, digi photog, html and java programming. The funny thing is as my skills progressed with using a mouse, and doing layouts, brochures, photo-restorations blah blah, my hand drawn comps and thumbs whent to hell. I think that is because Im left handed and use the mouse with my right. Kinda messed up if you take the whole left / right brained idea into consideration and the fact I cant even write my own name right handed hehe.

Ive never used photoshop to "draw" from scratch. And did most if not all of my illistrations in Illustrator. Gotta love vector btw :) So I grabbed this tablet last week and spent the first 5 days just doing brushstrokes, and using the tablet pen with my left hand in place of the mouse to train my hand for the hand to cursor environment..... I absolutly love it.

About the image:

Watching the speed-paints thread got me inspired, as with the other threads and the crazy amount of talent present here. I d/l'd the painter 7 trial 5 days ago as the classic doesnt have enough options for me to be happy with.

This is my first real 2d image in who knows how long, also my first painter 7 and wacom image too. I started out with a chalk bg (thanks to sleepless and his chalk / charcoal feel images), and started to draw a chalk apple that was horrid to say the least and this guy popped out. He was done in Painter 7 with only the cover pencil (one of my favorite tools for some reason). He was a bit greener hue though and I took him into photoshop and adjusted the hue-sat and added a paper / canvas texture to it (5 mins later I found it in painter.

I didnt have any thoughts or anything when sketching him out, and I dont know why as the face is least my liked to draw, and so I never do them. So I figured he was one of my inner goblins that had to some out hehe. He is my sad goblin. I may do some more along the same lines (everyone has internal goblins they need to free hehe) and or add a body to him, but who knows.

I would like some C&C as this is my first try at these sort of things. I looking for info on the dynamics, lighting-shading, mood and color choices, and well you know the deal. Dont be too rough.

Anyway thanks reading and looking, or just looking if thats all you did haha. I can be long winded at times.

Nice work.
I like "muscles" and contours in it. And the color is great.
You made me interested in your other work.

The only CC i can get is that i would rather see a dark background. Perhaps a muddy yellow/red/brownish color.

The mood, my is it crying.. nice touch..
I would like to see totaly black eyes with real sharp lightning.
About the shading, myself think it hard to do shading when having a light background, i usually make a temporary black background when shading. And then remove the bg.
Perhaps some darker shading to give it more contrast.

But i like it as it is now too, but there you have some of my random thoughts.

Keep it up

bM_: Welcome to the boards, to yourself, sorry it couldnt have been a more warm welcome, but dont let it discourage you from posting. Hell after reading all of your posts I was reluctant to post, just because the forum seemed hostile....

Anyway thanks for your comments, as they are appreciated. I dont know why I didnt see what you suggested, mabey I got lost in the piece looking at it so much. The shadows where actually black/green but when I brought it into PS they lightened up ALOT. I didnt even notice it. And for the background, I got stuck in the first idea is best zone, that I know better than to stay in, and didnt even try different colors.

So I fixed what you suggested. Took me a while to do though, as I didnt want the texture on it anymore but the texture, the color change, and the tears (which didnt have their own layer) were saved together. SO I had to go back to its original green state, then change the hues and opacities, and add the "black" shadows and tears, and work on the eyes. Then I changed the background.

It was a little more work then I wanted to do hehe, but I feel its a stronger piece. Also the contrasting green / red works much better then the green blue I had, thanks.

So I take it, its perfect now? Not a single flaw anyone cares to rip on me about (hell I'd take some neg feedback over none).

Welcome! Hope you enjoy it here. Piece is looking good. Might wanta give the lips more volume, there're looking a bit flat now, they also could be a darker tone? A big help wold be to indicate some shoulders on this guy, don't have to finished looking but it would help compositionally. Have fun.:applause:
