Hi,

I had a few questions: I was wondering was is the benefits of Subdivs? from what i have read it combines polygonal abilities and Nurb abilities, right? can someone expaline that more please? 2nd question is, i just finished modeling a head in polygons? i was wondering if there was any problems with the Topology. Here is are the pictures:

side

i also had a question, if any body knew any good tutoirals about modeling cloths, is it better the modle the body itself and then the cloths, or just the cloths as if the body was in side of it? which would be less complicated?

Thanks,
Tabha

What's the purpose of your topology? are you going to animate it?, is it for still?. When I look at your model, it seems that you are placing edges that doesn't define your model. Like the edges at the nose, cheek and mouth. And it's okay to model you SubD cage with tri's and n-gons. Afterall the SubD algorythm will make sure it is all quads.

And the difference between poly SubD and NURBS, I won't tell you. The answer will come naturally. :)

Well i was planing to animate it, so could i now convert that head into subdivs? see the thing i don't understand is, i don't understand the concept of like the numbers in subdivs, the 0,1,2,3 etc for the vertex what does that mean? it for adding detail to a certine area right? could some one please expaline, iv gone through the topology thread it was really hard to understand.

-Thanks

That feture is unique only to MAYA. No other software has that ability. But what i recomend, instead of using Maya's SubD try using Maya's smooth proxy modeling instead. What version of Maya are you using? I believe in Maya 6 they have that under the Modeling menu.

im using maya 6.0, so u think i shouldn't have any problems animating this? right? anther question. For the body, do u recommend that i make the body and then put cloths on? or just model the cloths like as if the body was inside of them? which do u think is better?

Thanks

Your model won't have problems animating.

The only purpose to have a body inside a cloth it to have the cloth be animated by dynamics. But if your model is going to wear thigh fitting outfit then its best to not have the body inside it.

thanks for the reply, well i don't want the cloths to be very tight, but like normal cloths.

i found this tutorial on it: http://www.planetsack.com/tutorials.asp?tutId=clothing

I think im kinda understanding the concept, well this is what i did, i coverted my poly head into subdiv, then u refine it like with the numbers, 1,2,3 etc. But the problem is it looks like mental ray dosn't render subdivs? unless u collapse the hierarchy, im not sure what that means but it seems to render if u collapse the hierarchy. I also heard that collapsing the hierarchy and rendering can make the renders slow, is that ture? im using maya 6.0, i would be helpfull if u could answer the question.

Thanks

I truly wish I could help you, but I can't
The only version of MAya i've ever used was version 4. And that one didn't came with MR.

Try posting your question in the Maya forum here in cgtalk. There are lots of guys there that already overcome the idiosyncracy of Maya.
