View Full Version : modeling
Snow Fox 03-15-2005, 04:15 AM Hi...
I have to say that I'm new to modeling and I was practising a bit.
My question is quite simple...Which could be the best way or the most common one to model, for example, something like a rear-view mirror of a car...starting with a simple plane converted in an editable poly and then extruding the edges, or creating a solid with a number of segs. and moving its vertices and edges.???
Another question... I was modeling the peugeot logo and i thought from the beginning could be drawing the perimeter with a line and then extruding but when i aply the chrome material i don't get the expected result (it doesn't shine and the material is ok). Is this a wrong way to make it? If so, what is the way??

You just discribed the 2 most common method for modeling, Strip modeling and Box modeling. I don't really know if one is better then the other. But I believe it's just personal preference.
And the Logo thing. Do post some images up. It's always fun to see WIPs :)

The geometry: The extrusion will give you a painfully flat surface, wich is just about impossible to light in a good manner. The top of the logo should be rounded a little.
Another issue about the geometry at a first glance would be the lack of bevels. If you don't have roundings at the corners (take a look around, nothing is sharp), you can say goodby to the volume of the object.
The texture: What is the assigned material? I certanly hope is not from the material library. If is not, we would like to hear some parameters...
Lighting: What is the lighting setup? And the renderer? A few images, if is possible...

Okay. . The chrome is not from the material library...
I used a shellac:
Base material: Raytrace (reflect falloff)
(environment: HDR image i got from a web site)
Shellac material: standard (diffuse map: a black color)
The lightning setup (if u mean what i used) 3 target spots and some omnis (I need to learn some things about lightning techniques and tips
The renderer I'm using is the default scanline one, should i change it to mental ray???
(I guess you are right I'm going to say goodbye to the logo and make a better one)(The chrome around the logo was just a trial, it's not very nice)
