That's a bit under the opening box office for "Ice Age", which was $46,312,454 gross in three days.

Word of mouth may help this films numbers next week though. I did my part by seeing it twice. :)

i saw it today with seven of my little cousins and some of their little friends, i didnt like it as much as i think i would like it but it's enjoyable nonetheless...but when that star wars 3 trailer was shown, those kids zipped their mouth till the trailer ended. O_o

I haven't seen the movie - but would like to when it comes out on DVD - but I like how the article makes it almost seem like it was a semi-flop for "only" making $37M.

The movie cost ~$75M to make and it's made 1/2 of that already in one weekend, and they make it sound like its almost a disappointment. Good grief!

Amen.

Honestly I've not been particulrly interested in seeing this movie. I dunno neither the humor nor animation I've seen in commercials appealed to me.

We were going to take our kid to see it this weekend but got busy.... If it were say... the incredibles theres no way in hell I would have gotten too busy to see it.

Still we'll probably take him next weekend, as he does share his father's love of the cybernetic life forms.

Hazdaz,

I thought that generally the rule is that you're supposed to double the spent money to break even. So 37 mil. does sound kinda dissapointing so far, considering that a first weekend is a major part of a gross.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie its such a great idea.
But there is just one scene im really looking forward to seeing...it looks from the trailer
to be some kind of ballbearing wave that they are surfing on?? dunno but it looks really sweet..

anybody who has seen the movie already can you give me a brief pros/cons or maybe anything i should look out for when i go and see it??

thanks

*Semi Spoiler Alert*

I liked the movie but I didn't like the scenes where they sang pop songs. This is supposed to be a different world, so why do they know about Britney Spears?

I would definately recomend this one. While I was underwelmed by Ice Age, mostly for technical reasons, this one is eye-popping. Not Increadables eye-popping, but very nice to look at. Its also very funny and has a great moral. The weaknesses are the lack of character development to most of the secondary characters, but thats about it.

Its just amazing that people think that $37M could possibly be "disappointing" for ONE weekend's gross.... I would almost be willing to bet that by April it will have made atleast enough to recoup the cost of making the film and when factoring in merchandizing deals and eventual DVD sales (let alone worldwide sales) it will break $100M easily.

Heck even in that article, it states that the Robots was the 2nd largest opener in March... right behind $46M for Ice Age which was the largest March opener - ever.

I think why most people think it is somewhat sub par performance is because most experts predicted around a $50 million dollar weekend gross vrs the $36 it took in.

Robots ROCKED!!!... hell i thought the incredibles was good, but now this just tops it off, just because it wasn't Pixar guys! common

and the the britney spears cut was hilarious so much more comedy value in this film.

Which way to lean? Blame the lower than expected box office on it not being as good or as appealing as Ice Age? Or fault the tough competiton from a movie with Vin Diesel and a duck?

My theory is that Robots are created by men.......to be Britney Spears back up dancers. And to know what happen next, watch i-robot, then animatrix, then the matrix, then futurama, Then Voila! Robots.

Makes perfect sence to me

Quite possibly the most inconsequential movie I've seen in a long time. Nice animation and nice voice acting but the story was disturbingly predictable and after seeing the film I didn't even know the names of half the characters in it. :hmm:

Worldwide,DVD sales merchandising:For sure this will be a money maker.

Loved the visuals.Story was just OK.Too much pop culture, just like shark's tale.Still fun to watch for the visuals.:)

I totally enjoyed this movie, and I would def go see it again (in IMAX)
The animation style was really unique, and the character and environment design were absolutely top notch.

I was disappointed by a few things.
1) the fart jokes and pop culture references, I just wasn't expecting them in this movie.
2) the lack of development of certain characters. Was it just me or did cappy have no personality at all.

I didn't think the fart jokes were funny, but pop culture references aren't a bad way to go to get a laugh out of people and i did find them funny

Just have to wait for Robots 2 to see more character buildup I suppose.

That's either a really cynical or really pathetic thought.

Exactly. Just when I was almost drawn into their world, the pop culture references threw me back to reality.

I think this movie was release 1 1/2 years too late. If it came after the first Shrek, it would've been awesome.

However, I still feel it is worth the money compared to most movies out there. And the animation was enjoyable to watch. Very pose-to-pose, using their entire bodies: seems like it's the trend these days, but still entertaining.

And I'm still looking forward to Ice Age 2.

Okay, just saw this movie yesterday and I loved it! Great pop-culture references, great animation, and a good (though cliche'd) storyline. Voice acting was pretty good, and the graphics were interesting enough to make the robots seem "alive".

Only after watching did I realize that Fender reminded me of the Devil robot from Fauturama!! (no wonder it seemed a little familar!)

Overall, great movie, though kids won't get some of the subtle humor. Hope the box office numbers get better next week!

Kudos to those who worked on it!

Beat this:

I saw Robots on IMAX. It was eyecandy!... and thats about it...

It was ok - better than their last animation but maybe pixar spoiled me on story content?

I too did not like the popstar/music references but my girlfriend (who we will call 'a normal audience') really did.

Personally, i hope this movie dies a horrible death. I used to dream of animating at Blue Sky and I even have a good friend who works in the lighting dept. there... but I still hope, for the good of the computer animated feature industry, that this film doesn't make much more money.
It's drivel mitigated only by the fact that it looks like candy. EXACTLY what is wrong with most animated features of the last 10 years. A huge staff of talented, amazing individual artists misused by focus-group thinking. In the words of Jacki Sanchez in Dream on Silly Dreamer (a documentary about what happened to Disney feature animators), "You have the London Philharmonic at your disposal, and you want to turn it into a boy band."
I felt nothing at all about any of these colorful, well-designed robots, and did not fear the shiny villains and menacing machines. The film moves (too fast) from gag to gag rather than from plot point to plot point and loses its credibility very early.
Also, there is the inexcusable presence of Britney in a situation that should have engendered tension, excitement, danger, and should have required the characters to exhibit some cleverness to get out of. Oh well, I guess the sympathetic contract isn't worth as much as a stale pop-culture reference these days.

^ He makes a valid and fundamental point. Make note of it student filmmakers out there. DO NOT LOSE PLOT. It is the very soul of your piece. I agree, those pop-cultural nuances add nothing but candy to a film, and in the end we exit the theatre with a sort of disconnect from any character. Development of character in plot is the single most important thing you must consider before you start working in film of any medium whether it be live action, 2d, 3d, or a combination.

To add to the above comment, please do something that you love, not do something to try and please everyone, because there's almost no guarantee you can do that. But if you're doing something that you love, you know that you're investing everything in it and your investment will return to you, be it now or in the future. Also, story/plot and emotion are the 2 most important factors. CG is just another form of medium for story-telling. Other factors, like the visuals, technological advancements, editing, etc. will help your film look good exponentially if they are good, but only if you nailed the story in the first place.
