Amazing work, wicked realism. The bump on his face is just right. Facial hair looks gorgeous too. However I do wish that the background was a bit sharper.

Truly incredible model and textures, however... his skin seems to be a bit too clean for a warrior... but that's just a detail... It's superb.

Very well done character! It reminds me a bit on Gladiator :)
The hair looks very authentic, also the eyes.
Would be nice to see him looking around a bit and saying a word.
How long was the rendering time?
Definetly a 5-Star-Character :buttrock:

nice work mate! Definitely at the top of the list.
One thing though.. to me it looks as if he's wearing make up. Still, i can't do that, so yeah.. all credit to ya.
This is undoubtebly one of the best pieces I've ever seen on CGTalk. The realism is incredible. Great work!

wow, what a great piece of work u got there! amazing  Those eyes are right on!
The only thing that I can pick is the slight plasticy feel of the skin, not sure what's giving it that impression, maybe it needs better spec...but the more I stear at it the less it bothers me, it is truely fantastic :applause:

looks good, the only (minor) things I don't like is the lack of variety in skin tones and the depth of field. the background is fine, but I think the knight himself shouldn't be blurred anywhere.

Hey max, that looks really good and realistic. i really love the hairs and the chains.
great job !
I'm glad to see stuff from you after the DPSI days ...
I had a feeling I over-blurred this one :)
This shader I'm using likes to absorb all the color variations
so I still have to find a way to make it more "dirty"..

To azazel: what do you think your facial expression would be if you were going out to war (or perhaps returning from one) in a far distant land?

Very nice hair/Model/texture work !!
Besides that the skin looks too "waxy" to me, like a Madame Toussot's figure, maybe U can work on the SSS-skin shading a bit ?

Awesome work; very realistic. I love the hair. To me his facial expression looks sad, weary and/or tired. The only thing that bothers me a little is the eyes - I can't quite put my finger on what it is, maybe that the eye whites look a little cloudy and pinkish. But overall, a fantastic image.

First of all, this needs to be plugged to the frontpage!
I'm guessing you used the shave and haircut plugin. I'm also working with making some fairly realistic hair in maya and I was wondering how you got it looking so good! What was your rendering time for this?

Fantastic! The only thing about it is his eyes. For some reason they seem ... off. After staring hard at them, I think there may not be enough of a shadow cast by the upper lids. I dunno if that's it or not, but it's definitely something about the upper lid and how it relates to the eyeball/pupil.
But that's just being picky...

Oh and Mkor, you should turn up the diffiuse on the miss shader to get rid of the waxy look as well as bring back the detail you are loosing from your map.

I disagree. Skin is waxy!
The whole point of subsurface scattering is to "diffuse" some of the small detail. Had a pure blinn had the same bump, it would have looked like granite. You see the bump in the specular layer, just like on practical skin.

Sorry but skin is not waxy, at least the last time I looked at a human, their face didn't look like it was made of wax. I'll have to disagree in regards to the whole point of SSS is to diffuse some of the small detail as well. The whole point of SSS is to simulate the way translucent surfaces absorb and refract light as it passes through the surface, not to disgard small details as you would suggest.
As far as seeing the bump in the spec layer, that is correct and can easily be achieved a numerous amount of other ways, but since the miss shader phenomenon does that for you, the old way of layering shaders to get that effect is no longer needed.
I don't want to hijack MKors thread, but I'd be happy to continue the discussion elsewhere =)

Congrats man, you just picked the bar up and put it even higher. Simply stunning. I cant stop looking at it. Did you make your displacement map in Zbrush? There is a a lot of geometric detail in your final render that isnt on the low poly wire you posted. Likes like a damn good diplacement map to me...if so ...can you give us a peek at it :)
altruizine
03-14-2005, 10:35 PM
Yeah, I'd love some insight on the chain mail. From the wire it looks like you've got an underlying mesh (cloth sim?) and then something attached to the verticies? Are you instancing chain links to the mesh? if so how do you keep those oriented correctly...
Great work.

I've been looking for the inspiration needed to get me to work, and this may be it. But I can't stop viewing it! I am actually laughing at how realistic this is. There is very, and do I mean VERY minor parts that make the whole image almost fake. But you show this to someone as if it were an image of your brother at the renesiance fair, and no one would notice.
I applaud you!

03-14-2005, 11:07 PM
Stunning. Absolutely Stunning. I'm interested in knowing a bit more about the process you used, though. Is it a displacement map on a lower poly model? Because your mesh looks really clean but slightly simplistic for the sheer detail shown in the final pic. Especially around the nose area. Or did you just use bump maps, normal maps, etc. Maybe it's because I'm still a newb, but I guess I just don't understand how you got that render from that wireframe.
Is there a WIP thread, or maybe you could write up a short tutorial for us? That is just some seriously awesome work. Makes me want to burn my demo reel and start over again. :) Keep up the good work!!!
EDIT: Oh, and any links or tips you have on using SSS in Maya would be greatly appreciated.

Sad eyes. Absolutely incredible realism - really fantastic job on that facial hair. The skin looks totally brilliant, however, if you forced me to crit, I’d say that it looks a little too “perfect”… like wearing women’s foundation make-up or something. I recognise the scar etc, but more blemishes could add something. I think if it were less monochromatic (don’t get me wrong, it is great skin colour) and had some slight more colour variations, such as very slight redness in cheeks and nose. Also, perhaps the dof focal blur is a little too accentuated. But this is beautiful, well done.

its a very well executed piece of cg. like some others my first impression was that it looked a bit waxy and skin could have more variation ie veins and redness. but they are very minor crits. when something is so close to reality these things become even more aparent.
ps. how the hell did you do the chainmail. pls let us in on your technique. i assume you contrained rings to the verts of the base mesh and rotated each one locally. is it a mel script? does it also mean it can be dynamic cloth?

It's an excellent job. You paid attention to every detail.
A couple of things that strike me though:
1>> Skin. It's AWESOME! Right down to the eyes and SSS. I like the technique and it looks cool so don't change it. BUT it looks like a laytex mask, WHICH is COOL!
2.>> Beard. I hate them. Not because I can't grow one, but it hurts to shave all the time. The only comment that I have here is that the hairs are too perfect. Meaning, it's not messed up enough.
EXCELLENT Work!!

Don't usually post here... but this is too good to pass up!
If you were going for realism (and if it isn't realism, I don't know what realism is!), you hit the nail on the head (no pun intended)!
You get an A++ from me!
And I read that some found that the model was waxy. Hmmm... It depends how you look at it.
Whatever it is you're doing, keep at it (because you're doing everything right)!

Wow! Everything here looks superb! Modeling, textures, the hair, render! Only thing is maybe integrate the hair into the skin a little more.
Also, you didn't mention this, but did you model this after Liam Neeson?

I don't usually post here... but I can't miss out on this!
If you were going for realism here, you hit the nail on the head (no pun intended)!
Whatever you're doing, just keep at it ('cause you get an A++ from me)!

those people, who give that picture less then 5* should show the better human face version made with CG!!! COMMON!! :deal:
(and if you give that "bad" points then you should point out whats wrong, that would be fair 3d issue)
..
..
..
VERY GOOD WORK, MAN! 5* from me, who´s lost the speech...:D

hahaha for godsake!!! i saw the tumbnail on front page and was like...****!! knowing this was gonna be cg. this is about as realistic as i have ever seen...
BUT
you need to give him an expression of SOME kind. maybe a heroic smirk knowing he has just slain some dumbass orcs on his way to the Tavern. and maybe that background makes it look too CGish??
it would be unreal if u modelled his entire body man!! the head is totally nailed so am sure you could have a ****in outstanding character here. maybe add a helmet!?
the wire you posted. obviously in its pre Sub D stage. you should Totally add your texture to that and enter it in the game art comps or something.
Listning to Old Tale by Korpiklaani has made this even better.

great work man.
after spending lots of time working on faces for the last year i can give you a few tips.
1.) add some more assymetry. look more at photos of interesting people. characteristics help a lot
2.) maybe more detail to mesh so you could add some subtle details to the skin running over bone/muscle. ( especially around nose, and lips )
3.)some expression would be great.
4.) you already know, but your shader is stealing too much colour away from the texture.

jebus, that was one strong weed ive ever taken. for some reason it makes this image looks real. that displacement are mind blowing. also just a tip tho, the face overall really nice, but could use more detailed shape in it, and the face too symetrical for a realistic person. especially for a person that been through battle, his face must have been through shit. just my 2 cent tho.
well anyway, back to the bong. :D

And I am going to have to join in the requests... How did you do the chain mail?!?!
matty2x4
Wow ! thank you very very much all of you !; didn't expect that much attention :surprised
I love your crits ! after working on this model for some time i cant see all the wrong things .
I kinda get used to it - if you know what i mean, so i need your opinions to improve it.
My goal was to create a simple "default" head
that you can rig and than with a switch of some maps
make many different faces (theoretically you could also use same blendshapes for different faces and use the same technic for bodies)
I used the waterblue_vector_displacement shader instead of maya's, because it dosnt need any approximation editors and I think it renders faster somehow..
I didnt have time to rig him yet, so his face is in it's default expression..
I just tried to cover it up with the title.. did work for some people ;)
Will work on his asymmetry (using displacement)
I know he looks too clean, will work on that (though you can see that the texture I posted earlier does have color variations and veins - it simply doesn't show up yet)
to BillSpradlin - I did use the diffuse on the misss shader (I mapped almost everything) and it has nothing to do with the waxy look, but thank you.
I guess i'll just have to increase the contrast of the maps, make it less reflective, work on bump map and change the hdri.. (I used FG for the light setup, so there is no "specular" on the shader just reflections from the environment)
All the hair (including eyelashes and eyebrows) is maya's fur - it renders in mental ray.
I didn't model the chain mail (that would be an unpleasant experience I suppose :)
The rings are instances that are distributed , randomly rotated and constrained to another temporary objects that are "buttons" on a cloth object ...
with a script I had to write myself
but there is more than just the script, so I'll have to write a tutorial someday.

Awesome work! I'd love to see another render of this with different lighting. The skin, hair, eyes, EVERYTHING is dead on but I think if you did some renders with dramatic lighting (torchlight, sunset, ect) anything to add contrast it would really make this pop. Just my 2 cents.
Kudos man, GREAT WORK!!! Keep it up!!!:buttrock:

Wow very realistic!!... Amazing tex & render.. really nice job... I think one thing that might add a slight bit more realism is if you had a slight hue change in your texture right below the eyes and above the cheekbones... if you ever notice someone in daylight.. this area will look noticeably more blue/purple/or greenish than the rest of the face depending on the person. Hue change there would also help the eyes recede into the eye socket a bit too..
none the less truly awesome job!!!

(I wasn't going to read all 12 pages of feed back so this may have been said already)
Looks great, but I see 2 things that bother me right away. The sides of his nose look blurred out, and without any detail. And some minor/less obvious (looks like post blur) blur scattered throughout the face. Also the blur starting in the background starts in his hair, and works it's way into the background getting overly blurred- way -way -way too fast. There should be blurry fall off, but this is really abrupt.
Other than that I think you have some really fine looking work there.

Fantastic! The only thing about it is his eyes. For some reason they seem ... off. After staring hard at them, I think there may not be enough of a shadow cast by the upper lids.
It's the fact that the eyelid edges need to be a bit redder; the skin gets really thin on that last bit of lid, right behind the eyelashes, before it meets the eyeball.
Other than that, HOLY MOLEY :eek::eek:
I just about fell over when I looked at this! Hands down the best head I've seen, ever! Even the heads they did for Matrix get a run for their money, and where those might still win in the skin department, the beard keeps it real close.

Some few things you should have mentioned, for people who do not know.
First - they are forgetting that you have received the bump and displacement map from somebody else - around 3 people are contributors to this work.
Second - this displacement map is generated VIA COMPUTER SCAN:
- high details of such precision and gravity stretch of the skin originating from
--- such low poly character --- indicate this fact.
I am working on motion capture and body/facial - computer scanning at Sony - even textures can be created this way - without any problems.
Third - There is a question from where did the person who gave you this scan - get the scan from. This scans are most often property of a company - extremely expensive equipment.
Still good work - allthouse your work would than restrict to creating the low poly head, making the shader, and setting up values for optimal displacement mapping.

Herbert,
You seem like a cranky person. You tell the guy to mention the things you outlined but wake up... you forget the fact HE DID mention them. That's how YOU know about it... duh!
The fact he used someone else's bump map and had several contributed elements is only known to you because he DIDN'T forgot to mention it. So why are you telling him to mention it?
You just seem mad to see him get any praise for his work and mad at the other responses that maybe overlook the fact the work was not a pure 1-man project. Maybe they recognize it is still an amazing feat? Envy is hideous.

Nice work, however, the skin texture seems way to solid to me, I would put in some blues and reds and yellows, now the skin looks like a piece of wax without much color. I would also take another look at the highlights, cause those look a little too waxy as well. Overall good work though.

Gosh, I'm a goof
Toyish!
Thats it...he has an appeal of a Ken barbie doll...LOL
No "luster/moisture" to the skin...

First - you are soo clueless thats just funny , but I thought that would be a good opportunity to thank again to people who make tools for the Mental Ray implementation in Maya
and make it more clear for other people :
misss_fast_skin (thanks to Master Zap) - is THE shader to make realistic skin fast and it renders really fast !
I think its already implemented in the latest versions of Maya and 3ds Max
I will make a tutorial on how i used it , but you can find many tuts here, CGTalk > Application Specific (3D) > Alias Maya > Maya Rendering > misss tests..
mix8bump (thanks to francescaluce) - is a great solution for using bump maps and mixing them with ease in Mental Ray.
There are also many other wonderful shaders and tutorials she wrote,
also thanks to Jozvex and sorry for not mentioning all other people who make wonderful tuts on Mental Ray here on CGTalk.
waterblue_vector_displacement (thanks to Jonson_lee) - is a great and easy way to use displacement maps in Mental Ray.
Second - this displacement map is NOT generated VIA COMPUTER SCAN:
I made it (and the bump map) with Zbrush and Photoshop (thats not that hard)..
Third - you are working on motion capture and body/facial - computer scanning at Sony with such en extremely expensive equipment http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif
- good for you ! and I just used my PC - very flattering..
PS
I dont know exactly how long it took me to make this because I worked on several projects at the same time.
I will write tutorials, just give me some time http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Excellent, as stated so many times before me.
Looking at the wireframe from an animator's perspective, one little thing i'd suggest is locating the crease in the forhead and splitting there. It would make for more potential when creating blend shapes, since creases tend to deepen and distort most noticably in that area.
Otherwise, yeah. great job man

I guess some phong render would suffice to finish the speculation, give 'em a flat displacemap too. Can you give us a render from another point of view?
I guess z-brush is in there somewere hehe :)

This is the most realistic picture of a human face on this site. I can`t even imagine how you do it.

MKor (or anyone else who knows about it)-
All the links I have found for this waterblue_displacement shader are dead. Is there a working link somewhere?
Fantastic job - really nice work (this is now redundantly redundant).

Well, body, you are a MASTER. Congratulations ! :applause:
The face look, little bit may i say, made up (cosmetics), and
it's still look so realistic.....perhaps extra interesting.
Wanna see more.

If you have been using Zbrush - please indicate this the next time
- this is crucial information - and not just "Maya and Metal Ray".
Zbrush - is a totally another story than Maya.
Presenting your work files doesn't mean you are proving the case, just that you have the files.
Zbrush can work good on 500 RAM computers = medium power computers are good enough with a 64 MB NVidea - computer is not the most cruicial factor in this case.
Under this circumstances here is another critic:
1. You have extremely large pores in the both chicks area - unless you wanted it - it doesn't fit with the rest of the skin - at least make them little bit less sharp.
2. Strange blurring around the nose and over the edges of the noise - on both sides
3. The skin looks of a doll - not much alive, but the displacement is VERY GOOD
4. The eyes have good texture, but don't look like embedded in the head - missing shadows perhaps? A bit too yellow - like he has dysfunctional liver.
5. Also the hair needs a little bit more work
Very convincing skin - althouse missing nuances of color - I know = shader problem.
Very good for the displacement, the rest still needs more work.

lol, yeah, and please indicate you used the windows calculator to calculate the distances and ms wordpad as a clipboard for your values. He also forgot in the first place to indicate he used photoshop, does this make him a criminal?!

Go home check your monitor settings herbert. Disfunctional liver.. omg, havent heard something that ridiculous for a while now.
Sorry for the rant buddies, but this had to be vent.
