I think it's amazing, almost life-like.
I like the unfocused background, just the way that a camera would capture the moment.
Congratulations!

this is just incredibly impressive, congratulations. However, the symetry hurts it, it throws this unnatural vibe about it. And really man, you came this far, raising the bar for the rest of us and all.... looking forward to seeing more of your work,

INCREDIBLE piece of work. Trully impressive.

I have only little crits. Very little ones. :)

1- The skin looks GREAT, but looks real like a human made of was. Something is missing, something VERY SUBTLE. Maybe, its the enviroment, and the VERY, VERY, VERY CLEAN look of the skin. It's too clean. It's not unrealistic, but this little ans subtle touch, maybe could be to put subtle and "visible" imperfections on the tone of the skin, little blood vases on the nose, or something like that. Just to wipe out the wax look.

2- The Theme is... The Final Battle... And we only know it's related to a "battle", because of the War Cloths (Very well done...), and the title. The're nothing more to say us that is a "battle" enviroment. Maybe this thinking go against the Clean look of the guy... A guy on an Final Battle, with a so clean skin and so shaped hair... This is not a rule, but the more you sugest the realism thru subtle aspects of the image, the more is the realist you will archieve...This is only a sugestion, NOT A CRIT... To dirty up his skin a little bit, and try to put a mask for the intensity of the bump, mainly under the hair strands...The bump looks a bit blurried there...

The blurried backgroung is very nice for me, i don't expect it less blurried... I like it this way. :)

The hair looks very nice too. The white strands and the "not too perfect" strands, gives it a real look. Really nice !

Don't get me wrong, but his lips looks real ! hehehe... :) Very nice texture and unwrap man !

Take Care.

Looks great, indeed. Looks like a photo. But it looks like a photo of a wax figure. Great hair, nice bumpmaps, amazing render. But no life, it looks too plastic to me. A bit of dirt and a facial expression would go a long way. Then again, never mind the dirt. Give the face an expression to match the title. Some fury, aversion maybe.

I love it as a very high quality rendering of a great 3D model. But you're on halfway to creating art. :P

Go home check your monitor settings herbert. Disfunctional liver.. omg, havent heard something that ridiculous for a while now.

Actually, I thought the same thing. His eyes do look sort of yellow, and I'm running a sRGB calibrated monitor... also, the extreme depth of field kinda takes away from it a bit... usually you can see an entire person in focus when you're looking at them lol.

That said, there's nothing else wrong with this. It is definately the nicest render I've ever seen of a face! An animation of this guy would be bloody amazing. Finish that rigging and get some emotion into him!

Fantastic work!

Maybe his skin could do with a little bit of dirt to make him more authentic for his time. At the moment it looks as though he's wearing a lot of make up. Apart from that this is really an excellent piece :applause:

Hollywood actors are shuddering now.

hervertV399 (post #182) is envy. He can't make anything like this and all in Sony know.

Max Kor: only one critic I spend many hours to find :-) is that the ears have
an incorrect red I think look unreal, also the nostrils are very dark at the
sides.

This is the best work in 3D ever. Can you post your URL if you have a webpage, I can't
wait for viewing all your work (and Hollywood directors also!!!).

5 stars from me, of course.:)

Adam was created in a day. So Max Kor, god of 3D, now is Eve turn...

A truly inspiring piece of work, you've really managed to capture realism in this picture. And although perhaps as people have pointed out, the lack of depth to the skin colouring makes him look rather like a waxwork doll, there are some things that I really love and add life to the model. The way you've handled the hair is particularly impressive, the eyebrows are amazingly real and soft and the scattering of gray in his beard adds a lot of realism.
Some people have pointed out that the eyes are quite yellow, while this is true, it's also quite real. I find that perfectly white eyes seem very unreal, just like 'toothpaste commercial' white teeth. They appear slightly blurry, like they're filled with tears, whether this was intentional or not, it lends a lot of emotion to the face that might not otherwise be there because of the blank expression.
I really look forward to the tutorial for this model, your work continues to amaze me.

In the meantime...

To setup the shader in Maya read the Jozvec tutorial here ...
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=163360&page=3&pp=15
(and some corrections from Francescaluce and Master Zap himself ;)

and read the pdf from :
http://www.lamrug.org/resources/skintips.html

If you have any problems after that here are some tips:

Make sure there are no flipped normals on your object,
if you have any light setups and/or FG/GI in your scene
- turn them off temporarily and make just one "key" spot
with raytrace "hard" shadows, so you can properly set
the amount of the global sss effect :

look at the "self - shadow" on your object (if it's a head - under the chin for ex.)
and play with the Scale Conversion parameter in the Algorithm control
- the shadow must be completely black except for the edges, were you should see a very slight "color bleeding".

Add additional lights and play with all the subsurface scattering effects..
(after determining the colors you want, use them as the "base" colors
in your textures afterwards).
To make the color variations in your textures show up more on your material
- map the Subdermal Scatter Color with the same texture you used in Epidermal Scatter or/and Diffuse Color, but with the appropriate change in Hue, Saturation and Value..

Then you'll have to decide whether you want your material to have real reflections of the environment (with or without surrounding objects) or
you can use the two build-in fake specular colors
(that will work only if you have any regular lights in your scene), or ..
you can use both, so your material will work nice in any condition :

- real reflections will work with just FG on,
- reflections and fake speculars with lights and FG/GI,
- just fake speculars with lights only..

In addition to real reflection (Reflect Weight) there is also fresnel effect build-in
- use the Edge Factor and Reflect Edge Weight to control it.
Blur your reflections with Reflect Shininess and increase the sampling
quality in the global mental ray settings to get rid of the noise
(you can also use "fine" bump map that will make the noise less noticeable)
and to speed up render times you can make already blurred environment map or
blurred Environment Shader (material's local environment).

Realy nice image :)

ok if i got some questions?

I realy wonder how you made that chain mail
did you manualy rotate an place all the chains?
and how did you copy the chains, looks only like small locators inn the wireframe image, is it some kind of placeholders?

Wow, congratulations, i haven´t seen anything more realistic than your creation, i just...admire you jeje.
PLEASEEEEE PROMISSE ME THAT YOU WILL WRITE A TUTORIAL FOR THIS, PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE.

Can you post the entire texture map and the bump file?. I really like to know how is the set up for the skin. I use 3d Max for working, but i´d love to experiment about the set up you used for it. I also like very much the wire you did. If i´ll write you mi email, could you send me the basic mesh for seeing under 3d Max, please?

Very good work man! im looking foward to see a tutorial of all this.

Wow ! thank you very very much all of you !; didn't expect that much attention :surprised

I love your crits ! after working on this model for some time i cant see all the wrong things .
I kinda get used to it - if you know what i mean, so i need your opinions to improve it.

My goal was to create a simple "default" head
that you can rig and than with a switch of some maps
make many different faces (theoretically you could also use same blendshapes for different faces and use the same technic for bodies)

I used the waterblue_vector_displacement shader instead of maya's, because it dosnt need any approximation editors and I think it renders faster somehow..

I didnt have time to rig him yet, so his face is in it's default expression..
I just tried to cover it up with the title.. did work for some people ;)

Will work on his asymmetry (using displacement)

I know he looks too clean, will work on that (though you can see that the texture I posted earlier does have color variations and veins - it simply doesn't show up yet)
to BillSpradlin - I did use the diffuse on the misss shader (I mapped almost everything) and it has nothing to do with the waxy look, but thank you.

I guess i'll just have to increase the contrast of the maps, make it less reflective, work on bump map and change the hdri.. (I used FG for the light setup, so there is no "specular" on the shader just reflections from the environment)

All the hair (including eyelashes and eyebrows) is maya's fur - it renders in mental ray.

I didn't model the chain mail (that would be an unpleasant experience I suppose :)
The rings are instances that are distributed , randomly rotated and constrained to another temporary objects that are "buttons" on a cloth object ...
with a script I had to write myself
but there is more than just the script, so I'll have to write a tutorial someday.

To quote a legend

"Impressive.......most impressive"

You've done a great job, hats off to you but what's the guy thinking? You've done a great job on the model, texturing, lighting and all, now give him some thoughts. He's in armour is he going to battle? is he leaving behind loved ones, or facing a nemisis? Be brave and breath life into him, a mind and soul not just a body.

Superb!!! I emailed this to some friends and "all" of them swore it was a photo.

However its so dissapointing to see that no matter how could a piece of work is you always get the "I need to find a flaw in this artwork rabble", piping in with some idiotic comment.

Seriously criticism (constructive) is one thing........but the nit picking I see on these forums is a joke.
I dont think Ive ever saw a post where nobody piped in with some stupid comment about a flaw in the work that isnt even there, its merely in their mind.
Although I agree nothing is perfect I really cant see how this piece can be criticised in any negative way, and those that do pick flaws I'd love to see some of their work.

I agree that there are some posts that are deconstructive to say the least. But this is how one learns. I work with some of the best animators in the world everyday, and trust me, they don't always say it looks great.

If there's a problem, I'd rather someone tell me than tell me it's great.
How else is one supposed to learn?

It is clear that this picture is mindblowing, but it does have flaws, and if the guy who created is happy with his artwork, then it is done. But if he's going for total realism, I'm sorry, but it doesn't look perfectly real and I'd rather tell him what I see to possibly spark something for him so that he gets better also.

He kicks ass, and he could kick even more ass. :scream:

As an experienced armorer, I must say that the chainmaille is very nice, although it's wrong. It hangs in the wrong direction, which means that the material won't stretch and the chainmailleshirt would be impossible to move in correctly. And the rings should have tiny rivets that rivetet the ends of the rings together. Anyway, the rest of the picture is awesome, it's just me nitpicking ;-D

First off awesome peice man. I had a few questions about your shading network if you dont mind. I Was wondering what you are doing with the grey spec map (I believe it is) and the facing ratio node and where is it connected in the SSS shader. Secondly what is the RGB to HSV node doing? Just curious what that does in the network. Anyways awesome work, cant wait to see whats next!!

Just one small thing;

You are using a narrow 'field of sharpness' which is good, but to me it seems his eyes have been put right outside the field of sharpness, and are a bit blurred. I would love to have his eyes crisp and sharp.

But still; terrific!

It looks really grait, really really good. Don't take this as a bad comment, take it more as a tip or.... whatever, cause I think you can do even better. I don't know what shader you used.... I think bump map on the upper part of nose is maybe too "large", in other words it should be more detailed and smoother because skin on the nose is generaly streched and if any wrinkles apears they should be really really small... just like you made it on the part of the skin between eyes and nose; a bit smoother. Color on the top of the nose could be more red, depending on the "weather". If it's cold outside the nose is the first thing to turn red or purple, but it looks fearly good as it is. About the hair... well, it's so good on some parts that I can't say anything other than WOW... on the other hand, the folicles are too fat on some parts, not too much but if the bierd is longer and the character doesn't shave every third or fourth day (like your character) then the folicles get a bit softer on the ends. This is not a general rule but in your case maybe you can make white folicles on the bierd a bit thiner, just a liiiiitle bit. The thing is, depending on the film exposure and type of the film and lights the hair can get a bit blury. In your case I believe it's coudy, and to achieve this color saturation you should have have more blur on the folicles because of the exposure. That also brings up another thing about film - film grain, there should be film grane on your picture, but not standard "noise", there is a plugin for photoshop - Richard Rosenman Grain generator, but maybe you should combine it with some techniques in order to get a realistic film grain. I also think that maybe the shadow under the nose is lither than it sould be; it could be like 10% darker. If you take a good look at it a shadows under the eyebrows "looks" darker than the shadow under the nose. There are some things that I could mention but I think this fiew detailes are most important. On the other hand if you animate this character or just make a simple shot with a camera shaking, add some motion blur I think none of this comments I wrote could ever be captured.

Once again, grait job, really really reeeeealy good!

Hi Max,

It's great to meet you. Your work is sensational! I had to do a double-take to make sure this was a CG image. I'm working on creating CG people -- something that I've rarely done. You've really given me somethng to shoot for!

That said, the eyes look a little off. If you have such a strong reflection with direct light, the bottom lids should crest up a little. And if you see such strong highlights on the cornea, you'll pick up a little broken reflection on the whites too. If you want to maintain the same expression (which is beautifully haunting by the way) you might consider reducing the reflection a bit and putting in a shadow from the upper lid and lashes.

Just food for thought. Otherwise, this is one of the most believeable, incredible images I've seen in a long time! Congratulations!

Absolutely amazing work of course, but I had a comment on the armor.
1. The armor is hanging the wrong way. Chain maille hangs a specific way so that the rings do not pull against eachother, which is how it is now. It should be rotated 90 degrees
2. Traditionally, maille was riveted, not butted like in the picture. sort of like this http://www.forth-armoury.com/Product_Catalog/competition/competition1.jpg

anyway, great work!

I clearly said constructive criticism is fine. What Im talking about is "Oh sthat shadow shouldnt be there, the blah blah looks blah blah. And on it goes. The kind of flaws that exist in real photographs. Like I said constructive crit is fine. I was merely pointing out people want to be the first to point to a flaw, they point out the bad, then say, yeah but its good. It shows a mindset when you point out the negative first. And I see it a lot here. You could post a photo, pass it off as your 3D work and there would be a multitude of people queuing up to tell you why its just not quite got that realism. Merely an oservation, Im not personally attacking anyone, so dont get so upset, take a few valium or something and go have a sit down, breathe....paper bag might help. And the maturing comments. Please! Youd think I just insulted your mother or something. Get off that high horse mate!!

You did an excellent job, a very powerful image. thanks for sharing some of your workflow tips in your tutorial - a huge help.

To all of you making the comments on the chainmail: That is not completely correct about how chainmail is made - that is but "one" method of many. Chainmail is also made as Max Kor did it, with the slice in one part and bent back together after looping it in.

Someone stole this piece of artwork and used the clonestamp tool very horribly to desetroy the features, then posted it on Conceptart.org claiming it is his own original piece of work.
Just thought you might like to add your thoughts.

Here is the thread :D (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=93807)

Good luck!

Excellent work Max! Five stars just hasn't seemed like enough for your work. Both this and your Night Elf have been great inspiration to learn more about SSS and texturing and push myself towards this level of realism. Fantastic work, and honestly some of the very best quality I have ever seen on CGTalk - you should be very proud of yourself. Thank you very much for sharing your Final Battle and Night Elf work process with the community in your tutorials.

As for the haters and ridiculously arrogant non-believers, just ignore their posts - jealousy is an ugly, ugly thing :wise:

Keep up the great work, mate - I look forward to seeing what you produce next.
