Im 3d stumped. Im trying to create a screw

I know i could just bump mad that center piece and it be done, but i want to learn how to bevel something like this. I dont feel I am readdy for a modeling project tell i know i can handle any piece and so far this is the only part that stumps me. If you please help out that be great. Ive been trying to get my share using a cylinder with 18 u's. Modeling tool = xsi!
Thanks alot hope someone can help me out.

I'm a Maya user primarily, but this method holds true through most 3D apps:
All you need to do is run a scaled cube through the top part of the cylinder and then boolean it out ... that is subtract the cube from the cylinder and it will leave that space.
At least, I think this is what you are asking how to do?

it kind of depends a little on how you are going to use it. If it is going to be shot from further away, then the Boolean, or trim will work. But this leaves sharp edges on it, like razor sharp. nothing in this world is that sharp, except for maybe a razor..lol. Everything has a little bit of a curve to it, so to make it look more realistic for up-close shots maybe try doing a stepped loft. Like, trim out the center piece like described above (use a primitive square or something, intersect it then trim it) then take the trimmed edges and duplicate them, scale them in and move them down a tad, then do this again, then loft between the trimmed edge and the two duplicated curves so that you get a little bit of a roundness to that corner. Hope this helps a little, its kind of hard to explain without any visuals. Hope you understand what i'm saying :). Good luck.
going to upload a screen shot so you can see my stump.
THANKS
http://sscabling.net/ss.gif what i want to do is make that crease and the rest as real as possible. I hate knowing something isnt exact.

first off, i personally would do the main bulk of the screw with a revolveed spline line, making sure that the outside edges are round. This way you could also add a little bevel to the top, of the screw also. That way i would only have to worry about the middle groove, and not have to worry about making the outside edges round also. (again, remember, everything in the real world has some roundness to it, otherwise it would be the sharpest thing in the world.) dont know if this would work, but i was thinking you might be able to go in and CV wrangle (actually translate the cv's or hulls) to make the groove.
aright im going dig into this again and ill be sure to keep you posted. Ive tryed this screw in so many ways its like a huge frustrating puzzle.frustrates yet if i dont do it im defeating myself.
help me :( THANKS
