View Full Version : Our Cinema Group Project

Ladies and Gentlemen, let do it.

After the votes we added, our group has decided to explore the weird, behind the scenes world of our favorite subject, 3d characters.

Here's the plan:

I will spend the next few days writing up a script that we all will have say on-(no, I don't think more voting will be necessary- I hope) and I will post it so if anyone wants to revamp or edit it, they will have a chance and we'll all settle on the best version.
-------------________----------_______-----------_______------------______------

Now the best part!!!!--- Characters, designs, characters, props, oh and characters!!!!

We need any designs, complete models, sketches, whatever you can come up with.

Remember, the idea of this is kind of a mini docu-drama, so there will be alot of voiceover to the film with some breaks in between to interview the characters.
___________-------------_______---------------_______-------------________---

The settings so far break down like this:

Story arc 1: Character has problem of being an actual alien and can't get a job in the movies yet, so works at a fast food place.

We need a alien type character, (could be a funny pixar type, more of a realistic style star wars creature, whatever you invent, just make it something that will impress and will make the rest of us go, Yea.)

We need a fast food drive thru window scene, also perhaps a old jack - in - the - box type order speaker. NO REAL RESTAURANTS!! Can't have Ronald McDonald or other real company identities involved, make up what your favorite grease pit would look like if you could build from scratch. We will also need a car. Old classic to a real piece of junk. Just so when it pulls in the shot to get their food at the end, the alien will have something to talk at, people won't know what the heck he's saying, and it pull away.

Story arc 2: Character keeps losing work because of being poorly constructed.

We will need a semi-goofy looking character that is in a commercial trying to sell a product. Can be human or animal type (talking dog? again, whatever)
Will need a backdrop behind it for it's setting. (If a dog, perhaps a kitchen where he eats everyday, if a human, maybe a office cubicle setting)
Whatever the character is selling is not important. What is important is, there will be a collection of out takes of things that go wrong with the model because of being modeled poorly. One outtake, eyes suddenly frieze up when moving. Another take, moves a limb to lift product and gets gimble lock.
another take , eyes aren't grouped with body so they float in space and out of head when character moves.

Story arc 3: Characters who has made it in the industry and feel threatened by the fear of real actors (we would not actually use anyreal character names or say what they are known for or what movie they are known for, but I'm sure people would figure it out)

The character will be in sillioette and we can have a disclamer on bottom that voice was changed to protect the character. We could have any character roughly modeled as long as it looks a character that people would know by their shape. Dr. Aki (with her hair constantly moving, talking about how hollywood felt scared and tried to destroy her career, by the way, anyone looking for a hot looking, vunerable type leading lady for their next picture??)

Or maybe a not so famous character in silloette, like a generic looking ant that could of been in both A bugs Life and ANTS, he could go on about how he was typecast after being an extra in both movies and now he wants to do Shakespeare on Broadway but noone will give him a chance. He is of course, disguising himself, because if anyone found out about his complaining on camera, he would be blackballed in the actors guild. Whatever the character, the scene will be of a blank generic wall with spotlight lighting, nothing with alot of detail.

There will be an overall voiceover to tie all of this together. The interviewer that asks questions to the characters will explain to the audience the plight of the 3d character and how it's not as glamourous as people may think.

Get your pencils sharpened, your computers fired up whatever you can contribute, will be welcome.

With the basic stories outlined, don't wait for the actual script to be posted. Take what is basically laid out and start posting your artwork for any segment(s). If there is something you create that is really good and has to slightly alter the story, we could always adapt.

Looking forward to the art. I will try to get the story up this week and do some storyboarding if possible. Anyone else that wants to do the same, I welcome your help.

Thanks to you all

really nice ideas! you put a lot of work in it finearts2!:buttrock:
that alien reminded me of the character i've created a while ago. does an<one think that it can be used? if so, i'd be glad to contribute it to this group project.:p

I like the one with the alien but it could be much nicer if he/she/it would be a chair or something normaly not alive

Just a note to add...

One of the things that people will have to realize when doing this project is any model or texture or anything that you create will become a public domain object. With all the parts and pieces that will be swapped around, there is really no way to claim that any one thing is yours and yours alone. If you come up with a character that you don't want anyone else to have use of, please don't post it.

On the other hand, if you were the artist that created something and others tweaked of fiddled with it to create a highbred of a new character that was used, your name will go first in the credits for that segment at the end of the movie with the other artists as co-artists. Please keep in mind that this is a group project and some will be able to contribute alot and some very little, but all contributions will add up. I really want the people that are able and willing to work hard to get this project done to get their contributions rewarded.

Because this is so early, and no one has complained or anything I wanted to let anyone know the situation in advance, so they aren't working on something that they might not want to partake in and lose complete control of their creation.

Thanks for the time.

Finearts

PS: I am slowly but surely getting the script together and I may be able to storyboard it to give ya'll the flavor of it. If I made it as a animatic, do you all prefer a flash file, quicktime (I'm on a mac), or just a few jpegs to post??
Let me know :D

pps I like it derwolpertinger:)

I think this is a wonderful idea! I'm not much of a character modeler, but I'd be happy to take on the fast food restaurant.

i think it would be very helpful if everyone who wants to participate writes down a few lines here about what he would like to do and what he is best at.
so i'll give it a start.
well, i like organic modelling, like characters or vegetation but also landscapes. furthermore i gotta say that i like texturing a bit more. and you can forget to ask me about animating things. i have almost no experience doing this cause i just like texturing and modelling more. :)

I agree on that it's good to know what people can do so here is what I can do(in best at order):
Lightning
Texuring(Most SLA, ain't sla so cool)
coming up with ways of doing mostly meaningless effects
not animating(actually this is a thing I'm very good at)

Heres my start on an ordering box. comments/suggestions please, what about elvis glasses?
It swings from side to side as it speaks, and tilts an ear towards driver to listen. I have some ideas for a scene with this;
• a bird perched on the hair poops down its face as it is frightened off when it starts wobbling saying "may i take your order" to a customer
• the alien is manning the drive thru and can't understand the customer and as he gets frustrated he talks louder and the ordering box starts swinging more an more violently smashing into the car a few times and freaking out the customer

Mike, that is freaking funny!!!
You have it right on the mark. I was hoping people would post their designs as well as ideas, and you got it just he way I pictures it.

derwolpertinger and bjotto, thanks for your imput too. I should have posted somewhere for everyone to let the rest of the group know what they feel comfortable working in so if anyone else has a problem or questions on what their working on, they will have a inventory of names to ask in that particular field.

Still working on getting a final script down, taking a little break from it to get a model or two done to post for everyone imput. In a way, with extra ideas added from everyone as this goes, the script may have to be loose to be able to include the fine tunings of our group.

My best to not the best in terms of 3d and/or animation:
1)Modeling and animation- absolutely love (lipsync, timing, any and all about animating)
2) Lighting
3) texturing - have not really applied myself to it yet , but love to learn
4) Making a fortune at 3d

Also, there was someone that posted towards the beginning of the project that said they may be able to get a site ready for us to share files and post more of the files we will need to complete the project. If anyone has any ideas, please post with your ideas.

Thanks

No kidding, that was just what I had in mind.

Mike, if you have the glasses for the speaker done, can you and Cinema contactl each other to figure where to put the speaker in the scene.

Those of you that are just looking in, don't be shy, come on and join us.

k here it is I'm pretty happy with it :p
the glasses are gradient transparent (hard to see with this lighting) which looks cool up close.
I've also started making some background stuff like a office building and a car. i'll talk to cinema soon. What sort of background though inner city or beachside?
Further down the track, it would be good i guess to render it in two layers background / main and composite in afterfx? then we could have a nice detailed background. whats your guess on completion finearts? hopefully we can complete it in less than 6 months...

finearts2
10-04-2002, 03:30 AM
well, time wise, 6 months would be cool. I'm hoping more of our Cinema group will jump into the project which will, of course speed things up but I have heard from some that they are wanting to spend some time to get up to speed with cinema 8 first, so that might slow things down some. I myself am juggling a solo gallery show for the 18th of this month AND doing some modeling and story work for the project, but as soon as I get done with the final pieces for my show, it is nothing but the project till it finishes up.

I have a script written out, and have story boarded out some of it already. Being the anal type I am with my own work, I will hopefully have a timed animatic for everyone to download and use as reference, done in flash.

I got to tell you Mike, I was eating cereal when I looked at the update of the speaker with glasses and I almost choked on a frosted mini wheat. That model is damn funny! It's great!

I am going to try to first post a head model for the second part of the story possibly this weekend to see if everyone likes it and to let some of our wonderful texture artists take a crack at making him look decent.

Keep up the great work!

Hi Gang,

Personal update... Been trying to get my computer up and running -crashed like a 90 man driving a semi in a Wal-mart parking lot last saturday, and it took this long to finally get the files (most of them) backed up and the os up and running. Will take me all day Saturday to upgrade and install all the crap again (OH JOY!!)

Just letting everyone know I didn't forget about the project, in fact, I will be going nuts on it full time after wednesday ( have a solo gallery show I am also trying to finish up for the 18th- please wish me luck) but with the computer problem and the art show, it put me back a few days. Sorry about that guys.

Anyways, I will be checking on the site like I do everyday, to make sure any questions or comments that I can help out with will be answered. I feel bad that I haven't been more helpful with the project (not posting the story board file yet, etc...) but in a couple more days, I'll be able to put 110% into this instead of 10%.

Again, thanks for the posts and interest so far, I will do my darndest to make this something that those who want to be involved with this will feel proud to show to anyone and everyone.

PS, for those who are just joining in or want to join in, please look at the basic storyline and use your own creativity to come up with what you think would be fun to work on. I have kind of purposely left the story in a rough draft so you will have complete freedom to invent characters or designs the way you imagine.(what we have seen so far is a excellent example!) If you come up with a slight variation of one of the scenes, the script can easily be tailored to fit what you come up with, so have at it.

If anyone wants to e-mail me for any questions, ideas or just to say hi
please do so!!

Thanks again,

Well, a little update.

I was working on rigging a character to use in the project but don't want to post anything but a mpeg to show some of the animation that can be used. Spent forever rigging him - just the face alone has 62 bones, but it looks awesome!
Can't wait to show to everyone to get their imput.

Now people, we need more of your imput. We have a basic story line, and it is left wide open to your ideas. I know with the talent and enthusium for the program, we can get more from ya. If not now, whenever you can.

More VERY soon!!!

Hi

I am working on a cartoonish alien 3-eyed dog-figure, called Hubby and was wondering if he might be something for your project?
I've included his image (not finished by far, but anyway...)

creart
11-10-2002, 03:15 PM
Here's a new image of Hubby; he's changed a bit already

So now he has 3 eyes, 2 fingers and 1 'foot' which actually 'sucks' to the floor.
He will move by hopping up and down on his one 'foot' and sometimes his foot will really get stuck, so he'll need his fingers to untighten himself and only God knows where he will land after doing so, because he really sucks tightly to the ground - he could hit the wall for instance and get stuck again - who knows....

He will be heavily soft-IK'd so his belly and ears will really show his movement - I'm very anxious to see him myself....

what do you think???

Mike Hooma
11-12-2002, 07:40 AM
I like it! Nice velvety look too :) As for suggestions I think the hands should be a bit more detailed. Joint marks, An opposing thumb?

creart
11-12-2002, 08:50 AM
Thanx!!!

about the thumb..
my idea for him was to be pretty clumsy, and having sort of 'diminishing capabilities' from the top down - that's why he has 3 eyes, only 2 fingers (which makes it harder for him to grab anything) and the one 'foot' with which he will get stuk or whatever....

This sounds like an awesome project, only thing is last post was 2 weeks ago. Is this project still going on?

creart
11-24-2002, 09:02 PM
Yeah, that's what Im wondering about too!

It sounds very promising and I'm very curious about what it's going to end up like, but as you say, there's hardly any new post in here, but maybe it'll come to life again.....

If anyone has any ideas or artwork to post - heck even some script ideas, POST<POST< POST!!! I myself slowed down alot because of some negative e-mails I received saying how this is such a waste of our time so I put it in the back of my work list. I haven't given up but there is so little of encouragement when you see how many have viewed the post and how few actually want to really come up with something to contribute. I really hoped when Cinema 8 came out and the exploring was on the way, we'd see alot of objects posted and what not but that hasn't happened either>
I will post a little animation (once I find what my bandwidth limit is and what I'm allowed) for a 10 second piece I was working on so I could 1) learn the animation tools in Cinema and 2) See if everyone likes the look and could explore and tweak the model.
As of today, it's kind of sad that I think the idea is pretty much dead. I tried to keep eveything so open ended that everyone could have a voice as it were to the final piece, but that voice seems hushed.
For all of you that did work on something, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you. You all really made me feel that this was going to be something special and again I thank you.
Giving it one last chance:)

Well, told you all it would take some time LOL.
Here is a jpeg of a early stage model and rig. This I thought would be for part of the idea I had about the character that has all the problems with rigging and lipsynking , etc...
Goes somethin like this...
During the part of the interview with the man, it cuts to a horror chiller monster type scene where the fortune telling machine tells the man he will die tonight at midnight!!! Each time he responds to the statement, either his eyes stay in one position while his head moves to say something, or the voice doesn't synch up with his lips, etc.. each take ruining the shot. Then he cuts back to the interview in the studio and continues to talk about how bad his animator, modeller is, etc...

I must say, I have received some positive e-mails as of late which gives me a hopeful outlook about the project.:applause: Just to update what has or hasnot been happening with me , I have been having medical problems that have slowed me down a little, but I feel my second wind coming strong! I think when spring rolls around and I can get more fit, my contributions will be more and more frequent.

Let me know what you think so far (of course, no backdrop as of yet, thought someone might want to come up with some creepy arcade type setting to put the machine into)

One other note, some of the data somehow became corrupt so what I deleted out of the file is the shirt and hands of the man, and the hands of the woman (used the same parts for both, I think I modeling I did was messed up -so I'll approach modeling a new set soon)

although this project seems to be absolutely dead there is one way it can be actually finished. This project needs to be approached simply and with organization

you cant just make a movie (especially not an animated one) from scratch.

to actually to do one thing that is needed is

A SHOOTING SCRIPT.

a script that is finished that way the charactors/scenes/rigs that need to be created can be constructed.

its rather dumb to try and make a movie with no organization.

its like trying to model your first head with no refrence pics, or knowledge of anatomy. Or trying to make an Xpresso expression with with having a clue what you are trying to do

Just my thoughts
