After spending some hours on this I would really like some critiques. It's not a part of a story, I'm just trying to get the hang of animation. Please tell me what I can improve.

Ah, I'm sorry. Nothing is wrong with your computers, I left my brain somewhere yesterday when I posted. :)

hey aradu,
it looks pretty good. i would change few things:

1) the camera movement: it is easier to critique when the cam is not moving :)
2) the head rotation: make sure it moves in an arc motion and use slow in/out.
3) the right hand: when he looks up, his right hand swing up too much.
4) left hand: change your speed from when he grabs it to when he shows it.
-dont make it go straight up like u r connecting the dots. add an arc path motion 2 it.
-dont have yur fingers open all at the same time.
5) chest: add more chest rotation when his head move and when he shows the ball.
-at the end, try to rotate the chest 1st then follow by the hand, just2 c if it's better :)
6) facial expressions: sometimes less is better ;)

good start :)

Ulysse31: Thanks a lot for your reply. I'll try to improve what you thought, I definitely agree with you on these points.

One thing I wonder about is the animation for fingers. I've been studying people and I barely see any motion for the fingers, but without any motion it looks very rigid. So how do you usually animate fingers in a normal walkcycle?

Studying live subjects is very good. I don't animate fingers in my walkcycle because like in real life, as you've noticed, there is hardly any motion in the fingers. Your arm animation in a walkcycle should start with the clavicle, next the upper arm, then forearm and finally, the hand. Here, there are enough bones to execute a smooth animation.

Don't get me wrong, the motion in fingers are very important and a lot of people neglect that, but for a normal walkcycle focus more on the overall motion such as giving subject attitude, time and weight. Fingers are just small details. If the animation looks rigid, most likely it's lacking in other areas, not just in the fingers.

you need to remember your trying to create the illusion of life in your work....your man needs a motive...a drive...basicaly keep asking yourself what does he need to do and whats doing to drive him to do it...if you can do that then the motions he does will look more life like....

good start....

ps how the hell did you get him to work..I downloaded him and there were no joints or blendshapes....
