View Full Version : Maxwell for messiah
tjnyc 03-12-2005, 02:09 PM Hey,
It looks like Maxwell renderer will have a plugin for messiah, as one of the Maxwell guys replied on their forum that they are coming out with a plugin for messiah.

Maxwell looks interesting but the render times just seem really high. There's a topic in the Cinema4d section started by Ric_353 with some nice renders but they took hours to render. Not to sound arrogant here but it seems to me that the Maxwell renderer is over hyped. Yes, you can obtain some nice realistic renders using it but is it worth the sacrifice of all of that render time? For just personal still work then it may have it's place but there's no way it's ready for production level work if you have to wait that long for one frame to render out. The images on pmG's site that are showing realism in the renders look just as good as any Maxwell render I've seen so far and I'm sure the render time was far less. ...I'm just sayin' ;)

Hype? Maybe, maybe not, but the quality can't be argued with. Maxwell does accurate, realistic quality without the hassle of setting up and tweaking lighting and render to get the quality. As for production, it is WAY to early to say if it can be used in production, it is ALPHA by the way, something people often forget when offering criticism on Maxwell. There are quite a few big production studios quite interested in Maxwell.
As for what was being shown on C4D post, was not even close to some of the excellent stuff that others have been showing in the Maxwell forum, and at better rendering times. There is also a recent test animation in the Maxwell forum that took only 3 min a frame to render, so it is possible to use Maxwell for animation work. Also, you have to figure in time spent setting up and tweaking settings in C4D to get great quality GI, motion blur and DOF. The rendering times wouldn't be anything to speak of with C4D as well, but add in the amount of hours that will need to be spent setting and tweaking things and you probably will be spending as much time as the rendering time with Maxwell, and you still wouldn't get the great result you get with Maxwell with a click of a switch. I must also say again, it is still ALPHA and who knows how much preformance optimization will be in the final product.
The things that I am psyched for is that I can do my character animation and character rendering in messiah and render every other thing in Maxwell. You can in later releases output lighting information data with Maxwell, which I can use in compositing the realistic lighting and environment from Maxwell renderings with character renderings from messiah.
This to me is such great news, as the Maxwell renderer will complement the messiah renderer and this resolve a big pipeline issue I had for my own personal projects.

Hmm, I suppose it wasn't fair of me to say it's over hyped now that I think about it. I didn't take into consideration that it is still in the alpha stage. For what you're going to use it for it sounds like it'd be cool. If it loads lighting setups from Messiah so you can do the animation output from M:S then render the scenery in maxwell then it'd be worth the money...at least that way you know your character animation will be complete so you'd have that before the scene's rendered. I'll have to keep an eye on it and see how it progresses when it's out of the alpha/beta stage before making my final judgement on it. :)

i would have thought this was quite a good fit for maxwell and pmg to be fair, both renders offer different advantages really...pmgs is fast and build for motion, maxwells slow and less built for animation by the looks of it...but quality wise is looking peachy from where i'm sitting despite the doubters...its in alpha at the moment so its bound to have issues..
we'll see i guess...things move so fast in this industry its hard to keep up with all the info around.

my take is that the more portable a software is - whether animation package to animation package, or animation to render - the value you can generate with it.
Though I'm completely happy with the LW renderer and the messiah renderer seems to be coming along nicely, the more the merrier....
now, wher was that stand-alone sketch and paint npr renderer connection....

Nextlimit has a new poll up today! Messiah is on the list of possible "plugs" so if you (like me) want to see maxwellrender for messiah, please vote in their forum..
