View Full Version : combining tex maps
RYGUY182 03-12-2005, 02:35 AM Hi all, just a quick question about tex maps. Ive got a scene w/ some props lying all around and i was wondering if instead of creating maps for each individual prop, and put them all together into one map containing all the textures, if that would actually save render time or not.
Because instead of having all these maps in my file, i would just have a single map but it would be applied to a bunch of objects......which do you think would be more effecient?

I dont know if i understand well, but i never see this method before, cause doesnt make any sense...
You would have a BIG map, and the difference would be just physical: instead of a bunch of small maps, you would have a BIG one...
But you would have the same work...just would change the MANNER.
And what about the UVīs?
Seens i still dont understand your question :(

well, size wise, and taking up more memory, someone told me that by using one texture map to map everything on i could save memory and things would move quicker in the program than when using like 6 individual maps. The uv's were mapped by having all the other props shift selected and placed accordingly. This method, if it even is one doesnt make much sense to me either, as the one big map is just gonna be mapped a bunch of times, so i think its pretty much pointless.

if your set is a big one. and if every props is going to load that big map, that will take longer to load up your scene and render.
Technically of cause you can do it. But i don't see an advantage of shareing a big map
