Why can I not seem to use either the 'MotionBuilder' or 'Maya' PLE softwares on an 'XP Home' system? The Alias corporate website doesn't seem to favour my OS.

I don't know any students who can actually afford, or otherwise require 'XP Professional'.

Whats so special about it, that will not allow my lesser and more widespread OS to let me explore these products?

Both apps work under XP Home. No one knows why they claim the apps need xp Pro, they don't.
