Got a 512MB stick of ram today, same brand and speed as the one I had before. I load up windows xp, after 10 minutes of running, computer restarts. Weird. Ok, I wait for restart. Windows loads up, double-click firefox, boom, restarts. So I shut down the computer, open it up, put the new RAM into another slot. Just turned it on, writing this thread. What caused this? Maybe the RAM wasn't fully in? Windows was showing the amount of 1 gig, so it must be fine... What was wrong? Should I use memtest? I got MSI k7n2 delta mobo, 2 samsung 512 mb ddr 400 sticks of ram, xp 2600+. Thanks.

ive had something similar before.

what caused it in the end was that my first stick where windows was loading into was faulty. once i used up the last bit of the 512 ram i would get eiteher a crash or restart.

run a test on your ram. i forget which software does this, hopefully someone will come by and give ya a link.

Do you mean memtest86 or whatever? But anyway, it restarted again. And when I loaded up windows once more, it wouldn't let give me the logon screen, and gave me some error message, something to do with memory. I took out the new stick, and just loaded up with the original 512 megs, and it works fine. I guess the RAM is faulty. I'll have to get it exchanged. Not sure if I want to run a memtest, since I already know that this is the new stick of ram thats causing problems.

The basic approach should be obvious. Remove the new RAM. See if the computer exhibits the restarting behavior. If not, take this stick back to the store and replace it.

Take out your original piece and replace it with the new one. Be sure it's not ur RAM-slot (dimm?) that's not wokring.

Yes, I replaced the original with the new one. It reboots and gives me errors. It's not the slots for sure, because I tried the original one on other slots, and it works fine. Going to take it to the store for replacement tomorrow. Thank you.
