View Full Version : Got a New Computer. How much RAM?

I just got a new comp, (Badly needed as my render times were so slow.) Anyhow, I have a Intel 3.0E HT, Prescott chip, and a Radeon 9200 card (I'll eventually get a new one, any suggestions...nothing above $250).

I'm wondering about RAM, I can max out at 2gb (DDR400, 184 Pin). I mostly use 3d Max 7, and some other imaging programs, i.e. Photoshop. I like higher poly stuff, but usually nothing more then like 200k, and I've just found the joys of Radiosity & Mental Ray. Will I ever really use the 2gb, or would my system be fine with 1gb. (How much difference would I really notice?)

at least a gig; 1.5 to be safe:)

Ah, never even thought about going 1.5. Question about that though, doesn't the memory have to be the same if going dual channel? If not, I'll just go 1.5 and save a little extra money for a new video card.

My suggestion is that when you do go to buy additional memory that you make sure it is name brand quality parts. Going to pricewatch and picking up the non-labeled crap is cause for many of a computer problem.

I couldn't agree more. switching to name brand ram got rid of 95% of the stabillity issues i was having.

I would suggest as much corsair or dane's as your motherboard could handle. :D

i could not find ecc ram anywhere in the uk, it was a nightmare especially 3200. in the end i went with crucial and 2700. all the places said i would have to wait a month.

Yeah, I looked at price watch memory just to see how cheap it would be. I've always bought crucial, I think I got PNY once, never gave me an issue.

The dual channel? anyone know? Does it have to be the same exact in both slots? Though I think I'm just gonna max to 1gbx2 184 ddr 400 dual channel.

Random other question while I'm nagging you all. What does registered/unregistered RAM mean exactly, and ECC? I know you buy different ones if you buying a desktop/workstation/server, but never knew exactly what either was.
