Title: (arch-viz) - Tribute To Tadao Ando
Name: Alex York
Country: United Kingdom
Software: Photoshop, SOFTIMAGE|XSI
Hi everyone! Well, it's been a while since I posted any of my work here (or anywhere for that matter), but here's something I recently finished for my university final project. It's one of 8 architectural renders. I chose to submit this one, since I feel it works the best in the context of the project.
Please be sure to check the full resolution version.
It's a tribute to a wonderful building designed by the architect Tadao Ando, the Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum in Japan. This is also my first attempt at "serious" arch-viz, and my 1st arch-viz project in XSI.
If you would like to have a look at some of the other renders in the project, please take a look http://www.alexyork.co.uk/gallery-uni-architech.htm]here (please note most of these are still very much WIP and are likely to change for the final pressing)
C&C most welcome as always!
Many thanks in advance.

i really like the lighting and the general render quality. simple and done well. i like it.

03-11-2005, 11:33 PM
Pure quality, congrats!
So this is an arts Museum. I don't know much of architecure, but I understand the building itself has to step itself back, so the attention is solely on the art objects. Yes, this scene really steps back, it's totally empty, there's actually nothing in the pic ;)
Is this building already built? Are there already exhibitions? Is this scene an exhibition room? Maybe you could indicate the purpose of the scene by placing something real, but vaguely, maybe like a 2D cardboard of one or two real existing objects, probably in the shadow?
But in itself this picture is pure quality. And I don't mind saying it twice ;)

You've got some real nice stuff. Good job.:)

arona & fluence - cheers guys!
otacon - m8... that's an honour coming from you. (btw do you know when the backlot is scheduled for a re-launch?)
lebowski - thx m8! I don't have any training (formal or informal) in architecture. when I started this project I knew it wouldn't work if I didn't have a solid collection of reference for inspiration. as far as I know this is an existing museum in Japan. I found a photo of it on google and decided it would be a good starting point for this project. I totally agree that it's rather empty. I had considered adding some sculpture or other arty features to the scene, but I simply ran out of time! I have to write a 10,000 word report on this project by next week (give or take) so I had to let it go in the end. As it turns out I'm kinda pleased that I left it empty. Viewers have to concentrate on the architecture rather than the contents of the scene, the complete opposite of a typical museum really!
Once again cheers guys. Much appreciated!
lebowski

Good luck on your word report then! If it goes as good as your render, I won't worry ;)

03-12-2005, 12:41 AM
thanks Nick :) I started off with a traditional lighting rig (one large spot for the keylight through the right window, a few spots for secondary keys near the back, one or two more spots to kick various focal points (the stairs and the picture boxes on the right wall) a few fill spots and a large spot for some ambience) and then several constant-material grids for final gathering illumination and finally a dome for some overall secondary illumination.
oh, many thanks to Bernard Lebel for his extremely useful reflection falloff tutorial!

Nice work. I love the soft hazy lighting. A peacful ambience about it.
Bit puzzled with the trees in the upper right. It's a large painting or mural on the wall, right?
Also find the perspective a touch weird, your vanishing points don't quite align. particulary the plaques! Vote from me all the same

Very nice. Especialy the lightning and atmosphere.
Lovely stuff. Great ambience.

thanks a lot guys!
rokol - well spotted! I decided to shoot this more from a human eye POV than a camera POV. I know relatively little about distortion and that sort of thing, but I simply added a little roll to the camera to offset everything slightly. I just got tired of those perfectly aligned renders and wanted to try something new! glad you like it :)
thanks again everyone. very much appreciated.

This is stunning. I would most likely be even more captivated, though, if the space was furnished.
Is there any way you could provide me with your concrete texture? Good concrete is hard to find, and you apparently have it.
You used simple, clean lines. The lighting is real-world. The composition is perfect.
Wow.

For that extra touch of realism, take off a buttload of that sharpen filter. You've got so much on you're getting those tell tale halos around your edges. It screams CG, which is a shame as you've got a nice image underneath there. I'd love to see you go the other way and blur it a little, introduce perhaps a tad of grain, maybe a touch of barrel distortion and to top it off perhaps play around with a little chromatic abberation?
Think about it, when was the last time you saw a photograph that sharp and flawless?

well done matey :). this image ROCKS!!

03-14-2005, 05:45 PM
awesome grit on the far side wall.
it's not really impressive architectually though.
i mean, it's some glass windows and a set of stairs :D
as for the rendering, the lighting is awesome.
but perhaps some furniture would make it look more impressive, using radiosity and stuff you know :)

Well done, Alex. You have established a mood that makes an impression on people. I've seen images that are closer to photographic that don't say a word.

at first: great work. excellent lighting and nice dirty textures, but in my eyes the dirt on the cylinder in the left corner under the stairs is a little too much and i'd like to see more in this corner. its rather grey, isnt it? another thing i miss are hard shadows where objects are close to each other.
but i give it 4 stars for the excellent lighting, the fantastic atmosphere and the - to me - very realistic looking reflection blurs.

this is really nice... i don't think it matters that there is a lot of negative space, nor do i agree that the role of such a building is merely to "step back" from the contents... some of my favourite musuems have quite imposing architecture... tate modern, san francisco moma, etc..
i like the perspective too.. it is a tiny bit off, but it probably looks better like that than in would if all the lines are dead-on converging, because it adds a bit of character i reckon..
i really like it!!

Hey man,
Some really impressive stuff going on in this one. The lighting is brilliant and your sense of shadowing is great. My only crit would be the light coming from the center of the shot, through the windows on the far side... there just seems to be a bit too much glow on it.
Otherwise a killer pic :buttrock:

I´m an arquitect an love Ando´s work. it´s just great that you´ve let the space empty, because we can fell an amazing mood that Ando´s designs have. I just don´t get what kind of course are you finishing. You´re very sensitive for capturing very especific moods on your renderings. It´s a great work, very inspiring. Keep up the good job, congratulations, and good luck!; )

The spacing is controlled really carefully as I can see the openess is intended. The lighting is top-notch as well as the texture. It would be great if a center of attention could be present somewhere in the middle. But overall an artful piece!

nice image!
for what it is worth, the building is a museum on the island of naoshima in the shikoku area of japan. That specific building is a museum overlooking the sea, and also a small hotel. So, the musuem and the hotel are the same building. You can stay over night there!!!
The space rendered is currently occupied by work from Jonathan Borofsky "Three Chattering Men", and two pieces by Frank Stella. Through the window in the center is Kan Yasuda "The Secret of the Sky" 1996 and to the right outside is Hiroshi Sugimoto "Time Exposed" 1980-97. I should have taken a damn pic of that view, but maybe next time! The actual floor is if i recall correctly 2 stories below ground. All I remember from the front of the space is difused light, and very soft white, due to the art work of Yasuda on the ground. A large portion of the building had to be constructed underground due the status of the island as protected land.
It is part of an ongoing project where ando will be continually building on that island for an indefinite period of time. The chi chu museum nearby, and more recently built is incredible. There is contemporary art all over the island. It is a magical place!
http://www.naoshima-is.co.jp/english/first.html
Naoshima is THE most impressive place i have ever visited. If love art and architecture, and you can spend the $$$ I highly reccommend it (if not, you can stay near the beach for alot less, but trust me, staying in a musuem is a unique experience.)
