Hi
I am just a beginner with these stupid questions:
1) Why 3DS has edit poly and edit mesh, i think they are so similiar(working on vertex, border, faces), why don't group them together? If there is a big different between them, please point me out.
2) Is there a NURB traning DVD (from beginner to expertise)? i don't find any :)

thanks
from Peter (cmk128@hotmail.com)

Looks like you've just started, so read the respective chapters in max's help.
Without knowing edit poly, you'd waste a lot of time on edit mesh.

Taking a stab in the dark, off the top of my head, but back in the day, way back when, a MESH was a MESH, everything was based off 3 sided polys, even if it looked like a 4 sided poly it was just (2) 3 sided polys put together.

Now you have the option of using a real POLY, so if you make yourself a 4 sided polygon, it's a 4 sided polygon. your edits and cuts across a face turn out better, your mesh smooth works better, you have more options of editing like grabbing a RING of edges or a RING of polys.

I tend to use POLYS all the time now.

I posted a similar question, way back when. . .and it started a lengthy thread:

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=146797

which includes a very lengthy and erudite discussion (not by me-- I just asked the question, but Bobo offered very detailed explanations of the history and distinctions between ePoly and eMesh).

Read through the thread-- there are some deep looks into the 3DS data structures. . .short answer to your question is that eMesh is the native way Max represents geometry, while ePoly is a derived data structure-- more flexible, but slower.
