View Full Version : Cloth Simulation?
Renderman_XSI 03-11-2005, 12:51 AM Is cloth simulation in the latest PMG:studio? if not, is the development team interested in implementing such a feature..in the future? PMG seems like a good animation package, but i'd need good cloth sim, to go with it..for it to be complete for me.
with that said, is there a decent way to fake cloth movements in PMG? lastly, can i export animation/rig to Softimage XSI 4.2?

messiah provides softbody dynamics but not cloth simulation. If your thinking flags and table cloth and jello ok, if your thinking clothing like T-shirts and pants that's something else. I have seen people do clothing with the system, it can be done. There is also a dynamic system for bones that could be used. Personally I find I prefer LW or XSI over messiah for cloth at this point. Most of my problems with this area of messiah involves collision.
Look at this post (http://www.cgtalk.com/showpost.php?p=1145083&postcount=2) for an example of the softbody dynamics system.
With the upcoming version 1.4 of Point Oven (http://www.ef9.com/ef9/PO.htm) you will be able to import/export animation to XSI. So with this you could animate your character in messiah, export your animation to XSI and do your cloth simulation there.
So if you found you weren't happy with messiah's current solutions you could use XSI for that part.
Given the feedback I seen I believe PMG knows there's a designer for a more robust cloth simulation system, but I have no idea about future development. For most people I don't think this is one of the deal breaker issues. Especially since a large number of users have access to other systems for that.
Hope that helps.

You can also go with C4D's cloth through MOCCA 2. It is probably the second best cloth system I've tried out after Syflex. If either MDD or FBX becomes available for a C4D<->messiah pipeline, then this will be a very nice option. You can also use C4D's cloth for nice hair effect as well.

Yeah, I know about it, but we could also use a MDD writer for C4D as well, maybe with PointOvenPro in the future.
