View Full Version : TV Spot made with C4D, After Effects
Nashville, TN, USA – Ingle Interactive and Wes Ware Creative joined forces to produce a thirty second spot for a regional arts college. The piece centers on an original character named “Art Chops”. (Created, modeled and animated by Wes Ware) Gary Ingle handled camera work and compositing, while both parties shared in the modeling and animating of the environment. The agency, IGI, provided the original music as well as a general storyboard.
Using the Sketch & Toon module along with multipass rendering gave us extreme control over altering the look of the finished spot. Using After Effects the sketch lines could be thickened/thinned, the colors of the buildings could be changed, and the ability to control the look of the character separate from the environment proved to be a major time saver.
The spot plays on a regional buy in the Middle Tennessee area through cable. Targeted networks are:
MTV, Fox, Cartoon Network and WB.

Cool, FFD's on the dancing buildings??
Cool, FFD's on the dancing buildings??
Thanks. Some occasional FFD's were used to get the building models in an initially altered shape, but all the dancing was done with 3 deformer types on each building: Bend, Twist and Bulge.

Thanks to Gary for taking the time to post the project.
I had alot of fun working with Gary on this one. He's a good guy to work with and for.
On "Art" I used the new tools in R9 to model and animate. The rig was pretty much a straight forward Mocha IK/FK deal. Not a whole lot of time to get fancy but it certainly did the job.
Gary did a great job working in the Sketch and Toon lines to unify the whole spot and give the client not only what they were asking for but a whole lot more.
We laughed, we cried, we held each other in the dark.. and when it was all said and done we felt like we had done a good job and the client was more than happy. What else can you ask for?

What else can you ask for?
A million dollars. And a monkey.

A million dollars. And a monkey.
Ahhhh, yes.... unfortunately we settled for 2 milkshakes and a gimpy possum.
(don't tell Wes - they gave the monkey to me - i'm keepin' it 'til his birthday)

ummm unfortunately, no. it's...dare I say it....POSER.
*just to be clear* - we did not use poser, but the video clip from the animation department shows a teacher pointing at a screen which has poser running.
Wes and I have toyed with the idea of putting together a proposal to do a short C4D course at this college.

nice job you done :buttrock:
thanks!
To anyone who might be interested, I'm thinking about doing some screen recording in After Effects (using Camtasia) to show how much control we had in compositing by rendering in multiple passes. Might take me a few days to get to it though.

Thanks for the interest. I'll try to put something together soon, but I have some other fires to put out first.

It's funny that most of the art and design school ads i see were either sub contracted to pro artists that were self taught, or sub par student aniamtion.
4 years may not be long enough to get a handle on this beast we call 3d (um, 4d in this thread i guess) but after that much money and time, i would expect a gradute to something better than the POSER ads i see in my area. One national tech school actually has an animation with the default poser figure in the default cloths as the main character in thier ad!
Sad, Instead of another useless degree, I'll spend my money on R9 studio, motionbuilder, and etc.....
Just a Thought,
R Webb

Oh, great job by the way! Not knocking you, just this crap peice of paper i wasted money on. I think they call it a degree?
Ha ha - no offense taken. I whole-heartedly agree. That's why we had toyed with the idea of offering some introductory seminar / class on C4D. I mean, really, it is a shame to think that those students are being taught Poser as an animation package.
One has to be careful not to step on the toes of the instructors however. :)
