Title: Lava City
Name: Dylan Cole
Country: United States
Software: CINEMA 4D, Photoshop

This is a personal piece that I did. I had painted lava so much in landscapes I wanted to do one with a city. I had a lot of fun doing this one. The building n the left on the foreground was modeled in Cinema 4D and then I got impatient and just textured it in the painting in photoshop. I did this in my free time over a few weeks. Final image was 4096 pixels wide.
I have included a detail and my original sketch.

On the contrary, the lava would make geothermal power a cinch. If this were a regular city being overwhelmed by lava, I doubt anything would remain standing.

Great work, fantastic atmosphere.

Wow... looking into the closeups shows how much detail is in your work. Nice!

The only thing I would like to see is some very slight touches on highlights for the lava. It looks a little murky right now. Here's an example of what I mean: http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/dailypix/2004/Jun/11/localnews5_b.jpg

Still.... unbelievably awesome :D

Great piece, as always. It seems like you didn't use photos in this one, or else you hid them very well, because everything looks painted.

03-11-2005, 01:07 AM
You actually painted all that detail in Photoshop?... You must have the swiss army collection of custom brushes and work at light speed. I think it would take most people the better part of a year to get that kind of detail.

Awesome, but I can see some of the Sydney skyline (stretched), and the Central Plaza? building from HK, so I'm guessing those bits look like photos, at least the sydney bit looks like a stretched photo, aurora place and citigroup looking a bit smeared.

But that's not to distract from the pic, which is awesome.

it is still in construction and will be achieved around 2008.

Great job, man! (I cannot image the patience it took!:) )

One doubt, though - doesn't lava cast some light? Or it just not enough to show from that distance? I really don't know but it's the one thing that strikes me as odd when I look at the pic - no light below...

Wow, thank you everyone, it is a pleasure to post here again. I appreciate the very kind words.

Ninjor-Yes, that is one kind of lighting condition for lava, I was exposing more for the sky and with the amount of atmosphere in the air, I thought it best to leave it subtle.

And to clear up any confusion for anyone, it is not a city being destroyed by lava, it is a city built around it and harnessing it.

andreasrocha- Thanks, but I did use a ton of photos for little details.

gsuhy-lots of painting, but also lot's of little photowork

unraveled-no, sorry, I don't feel comfortable posting the whole thing online.

captainjacksparrow-Yep, used a lot of sydney, and probably every other city on the planet. I don't really care if people can pick out individual buildings, I am after mood and overall impression.

greydef-nope, sorry, too much art theft going on.

janine-thanks, I am just getting into Cinema, on and off for a couple months. I love it so far, I just need to find time to learn it.

neofg- no wires, but this is what I took into photoshop to paint over. I don't pretend to be a good modeler and I think the design suffered because I suck at it. The grid lines in the image are my perspective reference lines in photoshop, not C4D.
http://www.dylancolestudio.com/Matte/personal/images/lavacity3Dbuilding.jpg

Sergey L- Not all lights are off, but it is at sunset so not many lights are on yet. I was exposing for the sky, so the city looks darker than it would if you were actually there.

Banshee- got em, but not gonna share em, sorry, see above.

Sparth-thanks for the link, that is amazing. I had no idea Dubai had so many crazy buildings. I can't wait to go. Thanks for the nice words, you rock as well!

Rizo- Gnomon DVD's are on the way, more info soon, but they will probably be out may-june.

SonianotRed- Yes lava casts light, but in these atmosphere conditions and an ambient sky, it would barely be visible or not at all. If it were a night scene, it would be much different, with searing bright lava lighting up the buildings....hmmmm....sounds fun.

Imperial 1983- Assuming I agree with you, you'd have to talk to my parents. Thank you, though.

Cathy- High praise indeed, thank you very much.

njtwilight- Did I put something from philly in there? I didn't know.

Weider- no FLW, just scribbling out ideas.

kwago- looks cool, I never saw it. You should finish it.

And once again, let me thank everyone for the unbelievable response. I really appreciate it.

Another vain attempt to pass a photograph as digital art. If you inter-dimensional jumpers keep up this tom foolery, you'll have others in no time jumping dimensions taking pictures of incredible worlds and posting all over CGTalk. First of all the Photo is so rich with detail, that it could not possibly have been done by human hands. Grant it the composition is perfect, the lighting is great, but so wasn't Ansel Adams stuff.

Sorry for my moment of delusional thought, I went away and weell I'm back... sort of...

On the real tip I wish that in the future you get more free time to create and share such stunning work with the rest us. (com'on tell the truth where is the inter-dimensional portal is located I won't tell)

yeah these two front buildings are from philly. the one on the left is half of the famous liberty place buildings. they change the lights on top once a month to reflect a different event (green for the eagles in the superbowl, pink for breast cancer month). I ate lunch there almost every day of art school. the other is where the philadelphia stock exchange is. there's more than anyone needed to know.
