Okay, something strange happened. I opened a scene i have been working on in Maya 6, and i got a bunch of messages in the command feedback saying:

"Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: imagePlane3" (this message was repeated for each missing node)

I can see my geometry and can see everything in the hypergraph, but all my layers and shaders were gone and i can't manipulate my geometry. Please help!

P.S. using a Mac with OS X

Maybe your file got affected by that #QNAN bug. It seems to be quite prevailent on Maya 6.0 in particular, where an attribute is supposted to have a number but for some reason sometimes doesn't! (for reference, NAN stands for Not A Number). When Maya loads a file, if it hits an error it will skip loading entire sections, and so you get missing stuff and a whole ton of other errors. As long as you can fix the first/real errors everything should be fine.

Did you save as an .ma? If so, then you have a chance of getting ur scene back.

Can you Copy + Paste the whole error message from the script editor? Is the first error log something to do with #QNAN?

What about the backup or the sequential saves? Its not like you've been working months depending on a single file right?

Here is the whole message (or at least enough to fit)

// File read in 0 seconds.
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: translucneceRamp //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: skin1_1_translucenceLambert //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: skinShader //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: skin1_1_translucneceRamp //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: bloodshotEye1_Veins1 //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: bloodshotEye1_Veins2 //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: bloodshotEye2_ramp5 //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: bloodshotEye1_ramp7 //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: skin1_1_skinShader //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: phong1 //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: bloodshotEye2_noise1 //
// Warning: swatches file depend node not found, icon discarded: bloodshotEye2_Bloodshot //

I decided not to paste all of it, it just repeates more missing nodes.

Ceql - no i saved it as an .mb. I worked on it last night, and when i came back this morning, it was all screwed up. I also double checked the hyper graph, and discovered that certain things were missing altogether. This sucks!

imashination - i do have another one from a few days ago, unfortunately i got a little confused as to where i was saving and saved this same file twice over. I am working on catching up with the other one, but if i can recover this, then it will be better. i was too close to finishing to give up on this one.
And by backup and sequential, you mean those done by me, or does Maya do any sort of backup?

Unfortunately with .mb's the error messages aren't as verbose and it can ommit ALOT of important details. With Maya ascii's, you get told exactly what the errorneous string is and the even line number. With the #QNAN thing, all you have had to do is open up the file in a text editor, and change any instances of "#QNAN" to a number, but that's only useful for .ma's.

.mb's are much more difficult to edit, and I don't know of any methods to fix em, sorry!
(though, I wonder... could a hex editor be used to edit a string in a .mb?)

For future reference, I recommend to always save as .ma's!
(You can set .ma to be the default filetype when saving to make things easier.)
Also, as imashination suggests, you should be doing sequential saves (and backups!). Either use Maya's Incremental save feature (Goto the Save optionbox, check "incremental Save" and hit Apply) or do alot Save As's

thanks for the help both, i have been able to salvage some of the pieces and exported them to an older file. Not so bad, but still unfortunate.

Good info on saving, didn't know about Maya's incremental save!
