Hi !
well,I just wanna ask you about mixed (blended) textures that you see all around in a 3d game environment,.. for example from some stone texure near a lake shore to be blended along with grass texture for the far ground,..
what is the approach used in this case ? working with mix maps in 3ds max (or blend material)
to get the "tow" textures blended and use the result in the game?
or just do the whole blended texture in photoshop maybe and then apply the image as single texture ?
why do we ever use mix maps in max if we can mix whatever we want directly in photoshop for example...?
thanks in advance...

eg.: in the unreal engine you have layers of tiling textures for the terrain and you can paint the alpha channels to get nice effects on huge terrains. if you had to use one single texture for the terrain the dimensions of this single texture would therefore be HUGE!

The blending is done in the level editor by the level designers. Depending on the engine/editor you can just paint with a different texture in the editor, and it will store the info in grayscales, like an alpha channel.

StrangeFate can you tell me what engine that is?

BTW, I am looking for an engine to use for my main project which will start in summer, i have the choice of Unreal 2x and Source at the moment, all other reccomendations are welcome,
PM me if you can talk with me on MSN about the choice of engines.

hi,
thank you all for replies..
I like the unreal terrain tutorial ,
how can we use a game engine, and can it be downloaded ?
I'm really a beginner with 3d game industry, but i really want to learn more about that..
for example after creating a character and rigging it,how can we put it in a game environment to be controled with mouse or keyboard keys?
any info is appreciated,(software used,techniques,tips)..
thanks in advance

Your best bet to start would be to mod an existing game.

The procedure will differ a bit depending on the engine but here's a nice video tutorial (http://www.rallyrays.com/tutorials.htm) to import custom characters in Unreal Tournament 2003/2004 by Rally Rays.

You might not be a fan of 1st person shooters but I'd still recommend sticking to them to start since they tend to have the most advanced toolsets. Once you're more experienced, leaping to other toolsets will be less of a problem.
