Wow, amazing painting. :)
Just had a chance to view your other paintings; a very different take on the Monkey King, but very refreshing and interesting style. Great job.

its like a whimsical mix of asian feel with a baroque mix. great dark greens and ominous clouds in the back. also feeling the textures in your marks.

Again nothing that can be complained compositionally. This version's Monkey King does appear much more intellectual and heroic. I'm not sure if it's due to different versions of the story or not, but doesn't the Monkey King have a ring around his head instead of two feathers?

I have the unabridged version of Journey To The West (four fat books) and yes he has the binding metal ring (or tightening fillets given to the monk by the Bodhisattva) that his master, Tripitaka put on his head to keep sun wu-k'ung under his control and remind him his wish to be good and to follow the scripture.

It is said that the great sage equal to heaven (so proclamed himself the monkey king) was wearing two magnificent phoenix feathers taken from one of his enemies.

There is much more that the monkey king should wear and many more shapes he would take.

At this stage I am merely having my first stabs at him.

Congrats for your beautiful serie of pictures : Really interesting to study them...
I especially like the way you used generously black for the portrait on the top of your CV.

Good luck and show more...

I am a childhood fan of the Monkey King and your stylised version of the "Great Sage Equalling Heaven" is just too good!
