what are some alternates for hair besides shag?

It depends on how you need it to look. Before Shag came along we did hair in patches and not strands. There's a cool tutorial on Meni A's website www.menithings.com describing how they did hair for their SIGGRAPH opener.

well i ment a plugin but thanks. ive been just using a mesh and putting it there but it looks too fake

There aren't any push button solutions to a complex problem like that. Shag:Hair is a good way of doing volumetric hair, something which has its own share of problems. Sometimes the advanced ways of doing hair (riCurves in Prman, volumetrics) are overkill. This is CG - cheat if you have to - if it looks good it doesn't matter what technique you used.

I've spoken to Joe Alter, and after his release of Shave&Haircut for Maya, his next port will be to Max, at the time I spoke with him he was searching for a SDK developer...

It's coming

Yeah, I've spoke too with Joe and then with Scott, and portage on max will start very soon :beer:

ncie free plug site but not many max 5 plugs(i know its realitivly new)
As for shave and a haricut looks like it could easily surpass shag but the ui looks carttonish. Personally i wouldnt care about that but some major buisnesses would.
