View Full Version : Rendering Engines?

I'm doing previzualizations for a sporting goods company that requires large architecture and placement of their merchandise in the store. As you might imagine this means lots of geometry and texture maps which ordinarily spells long render times.

We're using C4D but I'm considering switching to Maya for a number of reasons. There are many things that bug me about C4D, but the one brilliant thing that it has is a fast(very fast) rendering engine that gives pretty good results. Even a large room with several hundred K polys, tons of textures & lights takes an hour or less at 5000 x 3500.

The question is, Mayas' native rendering vs Mental Ray vs ???. Are there other rendering engine options (speed, quality,GI, etc.), why Mental Ray, how fast are the different engines? For example Lightwave has a great add-on called FPrime that allows refined (almost real-time) previewing of a scene even using GI!

I don't see any point in switching if I can model and texture like crazy, but end up with a 5 hour render that looks like doo-doo. :)
