this is a compositing project for school. My first time doing complex texturing and compositing CGI into live footage.

C & C please. Also if you know how to get the CG to match the scene more i'd be more than grateful to know.

Anyone have any tips on how to get CG to match live footage better?

also the shadows are terribly unrealistic. If you compare the real guy's shadows to the robots, the real guy's get darker as his foot nears the ground. The robot's just stay the same... Is there a way to replicate this in Maya?

did you try using maya live? a lot of matching the live footage to the camera is just tweaking.

the shadow can be done a bunch of seperate ways. easiest way is use a plain shadow map and play with the falloff & filters settings.

actually i was asking more of how to match the lighting to the live action.

I didn't actually have problems matching the footage until i did some masking after tracking. In my original footage, my friend was playing the robot, and i had to mask him out using a single clean plate which i hate to animate the position and scale to match the original footage. Thats why the robot looks like its feet is sliding.

I did try using the depth map shadow in maya and tweaking the filter size, but all it does is blur the shadow, it doesn't really make it that realistic.

I was talking about something more like this

I'm guessing you want something like in the top right. To do that with Mental Ray you would need to tweak the "Light Radius" and "Shadow Rays"
