Snow Fox 03-09-2005, 02:53 AM Hi everybody...I 'm fairly new in the 3·D world, and I need some help
I was modeling a car and I can't find a good way to make an excellent car paint material, with the reflections and so on...
I would appreciate all the help, instructions or even tutorials you can give me..
Thank You.

Hi Snow Fox,
i have used the metallic-paint from Jeff Patton (http://www.jeffpatton.net/Max6/index.html). If you use 3dsMax you can use this one and learn how he made it.
Good luck,
Ralf

Hi SnowFox
Try using the Shellac material as a base - gives excellent effects for light refraction based on angle to the light source.
Ray-traced reflections are practically a must if you are incorporating the model into a scene (not just on a generic surface - there you can map sky instead).
You might also try a MIX-map with Raytraced and Bitmap (sky image) for a complex reflection.
If the vehicle is not brand-spanking new, add a subtle Noise map into Bump, and MIX diffuse with the paint and a rust map, using either Noise or Gradient or both to position the rust.
Have fun!

if you are using max you can either download a car paint material or read 3 tutorials about it here: http://www.danielbuck.net/index.php?page=tutorials

I can't find the "SERCH" button. Don't read 'em and certainly don't reply to them if you don't like 'em.
I found it useful as I am currently doing a car. A search revealed this as only a few other threads with the words "car" and "paint" in the title. Hardly a deluge.
The trouble with search is that you have to get the exact phrase or words that people use, and sometimes it is not so accurate.

What your paint reflects is as important as your paint material, a great paint will look like cr@p with no environment.
Both DanielBuck, and Jeff Patton have some great info on paint, I would suggest following the tutorials rather than just using a premade material.
Good luck!
