View Full Version : Now the step has been made towards 64bit...
CHRiTTeR 03-08-2005, 11:55 PM Wouldn't it be logical to rewrite Max. I know there always have been a lot of rumors about a rewrite, but now the step towards 64-bit has been made wouldn't it be logical to make a 64-bit Max and as I understand it (don't know anything about programming, so I could be wrong) this can only be done by rewriting it.
Yesyes, I know that win64 will also run 32-bit apps and that it'll take a while before the 32-bit pc's will completely disapere, but just think about it...
What do you think? :)

I dont think so.
Probably they will just recompile their sources with 64 bit C++.. :argh:

I wish they would release some news, that they were infact working on a 64bit version, I haven't heard a word, Lightwave will be comming out with their 64bit version soon...
Also, I was just thinking, Maya and XSI used to be made exclusively for IRIX, which is a 64bit OS,
so were they 64bit programs that were ported to 32bit, talk about going backwards...

They've been rewriting the core parts of max with every release since version 4, as I recall. The original core should be gone by version 8 or 9.
Don't quote me on that, I just think I remember reading it somewhere... maybe from Bobo.

A tangent to the topic; does anyone know of any CG programs that utilize 64bit?
Our office is getting a dual opteron system, and I'd like to find something to show it off.

Cant help u with that, but I just wanna add u'll need a 64-bit OS (like linux64) before u can use a 64-bit app. Probably u already knew this...

i don't immagine it's as simple as this...
back when max 1.0 was just about to be released, my (former) studio was in contact with the technical folks at (then) kinetix. we were told that max would *definately* be compiled for several bit platforms, including a 128 bit.
so we sunk our cash into a 128 bit dec alpha.
then, the tech guys said, "well, we aren't gonna recompile it afterall."
so now, after a few years of collecting dust, that dec alpha is now a word processor in sales office...
