Hi Guys,

I have a problem, I am running a project for eight ten year olds, an introduction to 3D modelling, Maxon said we could use the the version 6CE that was openly given out with various magazines a while ago, this was very kind of them.

Something strange is happening though, and I need some advice. and I dont mean that the kids are picking it up quicker anyone dreamed possible. This is the truth, but not the problem.

The kids have all modelled a character each, working off similar parameters, and are going to pose the characters ready for 3D printing, curtesy of a university in the UK. Thanks to them also.

but when the joints are rotated, the children objects, i.e elbow-forearm-wrist-hand, all start to deform, as if being driven by a constraint from the world axis.

I have spent hours tonight trying to recreate this at home, on version 6CE and on version 8.5 that i run at home.

in 8.5 its impossible to recreate, on 6CE it only happens if an object (sphere) is made editable, after it has been moved from the origin. If it is made editable straight away, every thing is fine, but if the character is created, and sphere joints are made editable in situ, it creates this problem.

anyone have a solution to this, as i would hate to tell the children that they have to start again.

Thankyou

have some of these objects been scaled while the object tool was active?

if you look carefully, Version 6 defaults to the object tool, while R8.5 defaults to the model tool. this is the main reason why. The object tool is only to be used in the posing stage not he modeling stage. Your rotatations are doing all this weird stuff because thats not their true size but their scaled size.

Thanks for your answer guys,

all roads lead to the object tool

Is there a way to fix this Kai?, or is it a remodelling issue, i hope not the kids would be upset.

using 'functions-> reset system' sometimes works

With the parent selected, use reset system with all four checkboxes on and it shoudl work. thats the only way.
