View Full Version : Can 3D splines used to control a Walk_Cycle?
wuensch 03-08-2005, 06:16 PM I have looked at the VTM at 3dbuzz and at the MB6 help file but it appears as if the 3D splines are to be used with simple single objects only---
I had (from the feature list) expected the splines to be used as a path to move a walk-cycle along (one that make s a ful step, not one that walks in place)---
Is it possible to set this up (it would be so logical) and if so, how?

Ok, I got htis to work with animation in the story window:
-Create your path.
-Drag in your path constraint
-constrain you character to the path by using the hips of the skeleton as the constrained object(tried this with the control rig hips, but that didn't work.)
-Now in order to make sure your character is going in the right direction, select the constraint and open a properties window. Under path, select path settings and check "follow path". select the appropriate up vector and front vector to get the character orientation right.
-To adjust the distance and rate of movement along the path, select warp under path settings and the keys should appear on the timeline. Move, create, cut, copy etc keys to your hearts content.
Have fun

Thanks a lot, donShole.
Will try it out as soona s I have time, its good to know iit works (I assume the character is nailed to the path by the hip, or is there a way to nail the feet?)
What would be cool would be a possibility to exclude y-position of the hip from the alignment to the path so that the hip can retain its up-down movement--
will have to look into the options to see if this is possible.

You're welcome. Actually when activating the path constraint I used "snap" to ensure the offset is maintained. The only problem I have seen is that it takes trial and error to match the walk against the motion along the path - lots of foot sliding. However it may be possible to prevent this with constraints or working out a "stride value" like in Blender.
