ive been trying to make a translucent rubber/plastic for approximately for ever!!:)
i am trying to achieve translucency while still being transparent in areas..also secular highlights.
the material will be applied to a 100x90x15mm hollow case. it contains electrical components. ide like to be able to partially see these...like the i,robot material.
any help would be amazing!!!
thanks
..ive included the max file so u can see what i mean..

ill gladly email the file to any1 who wants it..msn or whatever

WIP. Idea stolen from someone else. Done in postproduction. First picture normal rendering with Skin shader /mentalray/. Second picture mental ray material :
Surface slot Glass /lume/- IOR-1
Blur transparency-On
Volume slot Mist /lume/ - Transparency-0
AffectAlfa-On
Glass will blur objects beneath surface and Mist dims them. Putted alltogether in Photoshop. Effwct is not much visible but imagine.

secular highlights? as opposed to religious highlights? I guess that's good, cause religious highlights are not allowed on this forum. :) sorry, i couldn't resist.

not sure what your app is....but it is possible to set up "blockers" in Mental Ray that block the SSS effect to create the appearance of translusence.

There is a tutorial for this in the Maya Rendering tutorials on Highend3d.com
