View Full Version : another newbie..
I've spent some time learning how to model in max, and now I am looking to take the next step and do some animation. I thought I would try something simple, but I am already lost.

I would like to animate the strap on this book so that it opens: How do I go about this? Is this something I would use IK for? HELP!! Any thoughts or links to tutorials would be greatly appreciated.

I would think that bones would work well here, but not necessarily IK. How you would set up the bones would depend largely on how flexible you want the strap to be. Also, if the strap is not a separate object, I would suggest making it one by detaching it. That would help tremendously in the skinning process. If they are a single mesh and you absolutely insist upon keeping it that way, then you would probably want to re-model the strap so that it is open. Otherwise, you'll waste a lot of time excluding verts on the book part.
In any case, you're in for an interesting time figuring out how to properly animate the strap opening. I suggest trying as many approaches as you can think of until one looks good. Get creative!
I like the model, by the way. Keep us posted:)
