View Full Version : Constraint on/off
leeloo 03-08-2005, 06:41 AM I have my character picking up a box.... using constrain>parent, how do i turn it off for the first 40 frames... I tried keyframing but that just turns off the constrain! Its not until frame 40 that he picks the box up!

you are everywhere
to animate constraints dont turn the constraint on and off set a key on the object you have constrained anywhere will do for now at the 0 frame is prob best then in the channel box a new atribute caled blend point will apper this is the thing you animate 1 is on 0 is off so key frame the blendpoint at 40 frames to 1 and before this to 0 if you dont want to keyframe everything with the s key just right click blend point and click key selected from the list

 I'm sure as I learn more and more... you'll see less and less of me!!

forrgot for the blend point go to the graph editor and set the curve to step tangents so the hand doesnt want to go towards the box before you are there
I don't know I have learned a lot and every bit I learn opens a new door into a new room with more stuff I dont know it is endless but damm fun

I think I've discovered this part too late... but when you constrain an object, say a cube to a characters hands... you have to be in the position that you want to start with? Is that right.. only my characters hands slide up to a position before the object is lifted!
Hope that makes sense! L.

let me rephrase that because I've kinda figured out whats happening..... I've got my constraints for the hands set to 1, the keys were inbetweening the earlier bit.... so I worked that out.. but now, with frame 1 set at 0 and frame 40 set at 1..... the cube jumps up into postion... how do i stop that!?
sorry if thats even more confusing!! :)

Hi
ok what i think you are asking is that you have animated your character from 0 to 40 at the 40 frame he is going to pick up a box you have set up a constraint to the box which kicks in at frame 40
from that I have questions you say the box snaps into position, is the hand in the position to pick up the box at frame 40 if so are you point constraining to the object with an offset or are you constraining to a locator at the position that you want the hand to be at when picking up the box and parenting the box under the locator.
what it sounds like to me is that the hands are not in there final position but I am unsure let me know whats up

That one....... "constraining to a locator at the position that you want the hand to be at when picking up the box and parenting the box under the locator." All I did was grab the hand locator and then constrain>parent to the box! Same with the other hand! The character was in position at frame 40 when I did this.
But I think you're right about the final hand position... I'm just tweaking it now and it's jumping less so think thats it!!

got it!! Just had to tweak the timing and frames a bit.... Amazing what a nights sleep and fresh eyes can do!! Not to mention a clear head!!
