View Full Version : WIP: City Bus Stop
rBrady 03-07-2005, 09:46 PM This is a texturing project that I have been picking at for about a week. The lighting is temporary. I want feedback and advice on how to make this look more realistic and more interesting. There will be a bus stop with a bench but I haven’t started texturing it yet so its not in this image.
Don’t pull any punches, I really want this to look better.
I used Maya 6.0.1, Photoshop, and a Nikon D70.

i dont think the same amout of work has gone into the floor that seems to need a lot of work :)

Speaking as a rookie (in other words what I say may be complete garbage) but the pavement flagstones don't match the otherwise superb textures of the wall. Also, there is insufficient detail in the kerb and road; more texturing required there.
Otherwise it's a great scene. Congratulations!

Thanks for the feedback. Now that you mention it the sidewalk is a bit weak. An Ambient Occlusion pass will fix some of that but not all of it. I got some ideas for pipes and stuff to dirty it up. One reason the curb texture and street texture look so bad is there isnt one. Havent got that far yet. I think the windows look wierd but maybe thats just me.
Thanks for the feedback, it makes this so much easier. And Cheat Mode, there are no rookies when it comes to critique.

there are stretching spots which although if seen from a distance wouldnt make a difference but if its this close you might need to rework those spots. But this is realy really nice texture work. My only thing is the structure looks a bit confusing. good work

Not quite sure what you mean by streatching spots. If you could be more specific I might be able to do somthing. The black spots on the sidewalk in front of the camera are OC shadows for a bench thats not in the render yet.
I agree that the structure is a bit confusing. Do you think a tighter shot would help. Or a longer shot. More info would be good.
Thanks for the feedback. It really helps.

Here is an update. I have added the bench, the white parts have no texture yet (obviously). Mostly concerned with the metal texture of the poles right now, AO is to dark on them. Long way to go, and it has to be done by Thursday.

The bench is way too big. The background texturing is great, exept the brick structure on the left of the building, it's a bit misleading, two different brick textures on one wall.

I agree about the bench. I like the composition so I will have to figure out a way of shrinking it. The cinderblock on the left side of the wall is from the original photograph, I will use an alpha to cut that out. Any thoughts on how much smaller the bench should be?

Can't tell that exactly, I think about 50 %, but I'm not sur. Orient yourself on the size of the doors at the front of the buildings, look around in your environment.

About the modelling, the bench is too big, as has aldready been said. Personally, I think the poles are too thick. Atleast here in sweden, poles like those are more like 10 cm in diameter. Those look a bit overkill.
As for the texturing, the wall is simply stunning, but if there is one thing you could improve, I think that you could add some more dirt/stuff at the bottom, where the wall meets the pavement. It looks a bit too clean and linear there. Or... something. It's hard to give any advice on the texturing, it's really great.

Here is the next step. The lighting is a little wierd. Little too yellow and the Dmap Shadows dont work with the transperancey. Still havent shrunk the bench in the render but I will. Its crunch time so Im not sure how much more I will be able to do, I can use all the help I can get.
