CGTalk - spreading feathers

Hi there I am busy creating a bird now m question is how do i spread all the feathers along his body. i tried scatter but that result was not really good thanks..

yes good question...to that i too would like an answer.
have you seen "for the birds" on the monster inc. dvd.
wow...to the feathers on those birds.
