Quote from Enayla last post :
"I won't be posting any new pictures for at least a week or so though. My right hand is out of commission. I heard my cat howling on the balcony early this morning and went to check what was going on - he was so loud I was afraid he'd wake the neighbours. There was a cat right outside and he was screaming at it, so I thought I'd just lift him up and bring him in.

Mind you, Azrael is a complete darling, he would never hurt a human on purpose. Other cats, though, he hates with a vengeance. Unfortunately, I forgot to give him a warning when I approached and when I picked him up, he thought I was an attacking cat :/ the result was me in the emergency room this morning, and my hand being swollen and hurting beyond belief right now. I'm just sitting around crying because it's so damn painful, those teethies of his went in deep, and he scratched the arm up all the way to the inside of the elbow. I'm typing this with my left hand, I can't even move the fingers of the right one :/

I just wanted you guys to know I'm not abandoning you or anything, I just need to let the stupid hand heal before I can do any painting. Evil cat :("

Dear Enayla, I'm a very bad 2d artist and I post here a quick picture (1h in ps) to show everybody that this forum needs your work (try the left hand, your mouth, anything). If you can't get back soon, there will be many bad illustrator coming like me.

I need good pictures, it's my daily food.

IT was my first post in this thread and I hope for you the last :)

really quick one this time. (5 min, illustrator + tablet) -
now, Enayla, I'm not sure whether or not you are familiar with the concept of norwegian milk chocolate, but it is in my opinion *the* most healing thing no matter what pain one suffers. Get well soon!

Don't trust Oblivisci for a second there Enayla - go for BELGIAN chocolate, only way to go... :D

This is a 3 in 1 sketch, kind of, cause it makes up for my not participating in Portraits and Avatar War as well as it's in topic for this one... Hope you like it.

Around two hours in Photoshop CS + wacom, with ref from the fundamentals week: portraits thread, but not a paintover.

Robertt: cool sketch! I find PSP's brush support rather lacking for tablet, but i've been a long-time (4years user) of PSP, always glad to see art made with it :)

White Rabbit: that's really quite a nice sketch, actually!;) my only crit is.. is that me braiding her hair..? i'm just a lowly demon, i'm not worthy!

bealobo: that's looking good, but try softer brushes for shading and sharper brushes for outlining maybe (I got some really good tips at the sticky thread goro did in this forum for sharing his brushes and tuts), but you're doing really good with the colors!

I've already posted my "get well" yesterday before I knew this was going to be today's topic lol

So I'll just say here's wishing you a speedy recovery, Enayla!!:)

Robertt
03-08-2005, 02:39 AM
thanks deaderthanred! :) I wonder if anyone will catch her braids loosely spelling out HSL ;)

I bounce between apps for different reasons. I really like PSP's workflow, although going from 7 to 9 was a little odd given the major UI changes. People probably wonder why I sometimes use a prog like Artrage when I have Painter. That's because I'm doing heavy 3d stuff almost nonstop these days, which means most system resources consumed and a busy little processor :) Artrage is small and responds nimbly to Wacom during my 3d renders, although I hear Painter 9 is much faster than 8 (my version).

Anyway, I hope Enayla is out there somewhere smiling and feeling much better than the day before

Wow! you guys nearly put tears in my eyes  this is so sweet!! I'm saving every picture, thank you SO much

I have to be brief as I'm having problems typing with only one hand. The day after the incident, the hand had swelled to nearly twice its size and was looking so awful that I had to go back to the hospital. There's lots of dirt in kitty fangs and claws.

The doctor didn't quite know what to do, so he sent me to a hand surgeon, saying they might have to cut it open :( I was so scared! to an artist, the 'artsy' hand is everything!

The hand surgeon was kind of aghast at the damage a little kitty had done to my hand, four more doctors heard about it and were curious enough to come take a look. I ended up with the arm from elbow and down in a cast. If it's not better by Thursday, they'll have to cut it open to drain it :( Am pretty terrified by that prospect.

Even under the best circumstances, it seems unlikely that I'll be able to paint for another two weeks :/

I've got your kind and sweet words and drawings to keep me happy meanwhile, though. Thank you SO much everyone!! *HUG*

(oh, and Azrael is doing fine: He's his normal, adorable self. I just can't be mad at him, he didn't know what he was doing)

Sorry for what happened to you, Enayla. And I'm sure that Azrael is, too. Our cat will mope around the house until "forgiven" if she's done something wrong. I hope your doctor gave you some good meds to stop the pain and that you make a speedy recovery.

i have two white cats. sisters.
the other one is slim and devious looking..
the other one is fat, and looks like a tv set when you have forgotten to turn it off and there is the ant-fight going, you know.
but still - amazingly - it's the stupid fat one, that knows how to open doors here, while the other one doesn't.
together, they are plotting against me, I'm sure of it. there they are now, sitting on sofa and staring at me.. whispering something to each other... hmm.. have to close that door...

wacom + gimp, 30minutes.

oh, and hope your hand gets better soon. the cutting it open to drain it, doesn't sound nice, but I've had that once, it's not too bad, and heals faster then.

Wow I am sorry to hear that Linda :( and awww what a totally cute thread.
I am actually tempted to a speed myself this evening (and I totally suck at speedpaints too.. :/)

On a more scary note. My cat Cola scratched me pretty bad too yesterday (and she never did that before either). I do have two very neat and kinda deep cat claw scars over my collarbone and cheek. Not nearly as bad as yours but I thought it was a strange coincedence..

Hope you get better soon.

Thanks for the update, Enayla! Yeah, it's true cats have a lot of dirt under their claws and on their teeth, but that's the reason for the swelling - a couple of weeks ago my cat stratched me pretty badly around the wrist and it was swollen about twice its size for a few days, you couldn't see the scars anymore but it was huge, then the next day it was fine. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, take vitamins and let your body do the job, I'm sure it'll all be fine before you need surgery!

Enayla
03-08-2005, 10:16 AM
Aw, thanks again, everyone. It's actually hurting less now when I'm wearing the cast. Azrael is asleep in my lap right now and he's being quite insolently cute.

I snapped a picture of the claw-like thing my hand has become, right before I went to the hospital yesterday. By the time I got to meet the hand surgeon, it was even more swollen, the fingers looked like icky sausages!

(just the top of the hand with the tiny bites, not the inside of the wrist where the bad scratches were) claw hand (http://www.furiae.com/images/handen3.jpg)

I'm thinking, maybe us artists should get special insurance for our hands. Without them, we're sorta worthless o.o

Again, HUGE hugs everyone, and much love!

Wow Enayla! When I first saw the pic I thought it... Are you allergic to cats? I mean, I am, and I have a cat and he has never hurt me badly but... when we fight a bit (just playing) and he scratches me, the wound just swells and swells.
Anyway, maybe Azzys claws are really powerful and this is just the doctor in me (foreign people tend to say that the spanish people always act like they know everything about medicine). :D
Again... get well soon!

Its supposed to be you, Enayla, holding a wacom-pen (using my old one as reference since I don't know what tablet you got) and the photoshop-brush.

The text sais something like "get better soon" in Norwegian, she should be able to understand it. It would just feel fake writing it in Enghlish knowing I'd speak Norwegian or Sweedish whit her in the real world. Hope you guys don't mind that.

Hi, I've been following this sketch forum since it was founded, but I've never had the courage (or time :)) to post here. I have a week off school and I thought that now would be a good time to join this legendary group of speed-painting masters :D.

Of course, this topic only made me want to draw more and so I took my Wacom and started to draw something pretty for Enayla. I'm only starting to catch all the tricks in digital painting, so I use a lot of references (and paintovers) to accomplish what I have in mind. I think my reference is quite obvious but I'm not good painting cats, especially sorry and cute cats.

So, best wishes to Linda/Enayla from Finland, and get well soon so we could have you here as an inspiration and fellow artist .

Painter IX.... 3 hours I think? 4 hours... let me explain... I worked for 1 hour on it and saved it... then worked for about 45 min to 1 hour... and power went out and I didn't save it. :( So I lost 1 hour of work so I had to start all over again. Pffft. I was chatting at the same time... so all added up the time. :P If I didn't chat and power didn't go out, it should have been about 2 hours! :P

I don't care about time... I wanted to make something special for Enayla. :D Feel better soon Enayla! Hugggg

If Photoshop's Healing Brush really worked. Enayla i noticed you love nice dresses so here is one of mine, hope it doesn't hurt much next days or while sleeping, but see it as an opportunity, you don't need your hand to fill your head with fresh inspiration to make a kick start when its better.

IT's a disaster...:argh: ....

Get weeeeeeeeeeell!!!

I remember when my cat had babies, she bit my mom in the hand because she thought my mom was hurting her back there where it was hurting. Went straight through the muscle, and she's usually so nice, like a wee girlscout or somin'.

PS:I'm making a doodle too!!! I'll put it in this post.

She says: Get well Enayla!!! Or my daddy won't join the daily sketch forum!!!

Wip but I'll start filling in with colour in a minute or so and update everything...this is really fun...

and with colour,
edit: Woops...:D ...just found I don't even know how to work with layers in painter. And I have to make pictures for a school assignment, the sun just came out. Will finish before tonight. (It will probably be hideous.)
edit2:back now, read tutorials and am going for it right now. clocked at 18:04...zhang
ahum...edit3:finished after 1,5 or 2 hours or so, 't was fun. But I don't think I understand colours yet, So I'll leave the lineart too. Because it's better like that.

Damn, JVaughan. That's the funniest thing I've ever seen! Perfect comedic timing.

Anyway, Anayla you're a survivor. And this affords you the opportunity to try something creative with your other hand. Should make for some interesting art. You'll be back in no time...but protect your eyes just in case...

Linda, sorry I didn't get a chance to make you a get well card. I hope your hand is feeling better by now and it's nothing too serious. I saw this article on Yahoo news today and immediately thought about this thread and how much more serious it could be when cats injure their owners.

There's always a bright side ... you could have been this guy :D

Get well soon. We all miss your paintings here on the Daily Sketch forum.

Linda, I haven't been able to get an image together to go with these best wishes, either. I've been through a similar situation, and learned I really did heal faster when I followed the doctor's instructions carefully. Love and hugs from here. We'll see you when you're ready to be back.

Oj, sorry for not giving an update before now. I'm happily shocked to get back and see the thread this huge    !! Thank you so much everyone, it's so sweet!

What happened was I went back to the doctor to have the cast removed on Thursday, but the hand was still badly enough off that they just put a new one on it, sigh. I have to wear this one until Wednesday, I'm keeping the fingers of my other hand crossed that I can use the hand at least a little after that, and that they don't need to put on a new cast.

It's funny, I don't think I've ever been as inspired as I am now. I so want to paint. I hope the inspiration holds until I can actually hold a pencil, ha ha. I can't even sign a receipt with my left hand... I suck.

I see you guys have some awesome topics to paint on, man I'd almost be willing to kill (heheh, nah, not quite) to join in on the zodiac and the queen of hearts thing... cruel!

Again, thank you for all the inspiring, wonderful pictures in this thread and for all the well-wishes. Miss you all fiercely, can't wait to join the ranks again! Hugs! (I'll reply to all the private messages sent to me when I can type properly again, staying away from the computer for now -- it's only depressing me)

Daily sketch topic hadnt changed yet so i decided to do something like that.

So sorry for cursing you! It is my fault your hand swelled up. Skill jealousy is a bad thing.

http://www.geocities.com/cgreality/getwell.jpgEarlier sketch of my 'roomate' "Pantera".
All together, probably close to two hours ( yes ...horrible ). Started in Sketch book Pro, abondoned once the demo ran out, and finished ( ? ) today in Photoshop

Enayla, you inspire us all.
It would be a great loss to have you suffer some kind of permanent damage from this.
I sincerely hope you make a full recovery.

Man, this is such a sweet thing to do!! I sincerely hope that your hands heals up, and no matter how long it takes. I'm praying for you, that you don't need surgery. *hugs* Feel better soon!

Roughly 10 minutes in Photoshop, Wacom Tablet.

It's not good by any means, but its the thought that counts right? :)
