Hey Gang,

I've already posted this in the Tech/Hardware forum, but I thought it couldn't hurt too much to post it here as well (ok, wrong forum, but those guys over there scare me [I don't even know the RPMs in my car]), and get some game industry people looking at it too.

I'm looking for a machine that I can develop game assets on. I currently run Lightwave on a mac, but in Melbourne, it's all mostly Max, some Maya and one XSI. It seems to me that (at least on a trade level) my best bet at cracking the business is to get skilled up on PC platform friendly apps. So I've asked a few companies to provide a specification that will fit my fairly meagre budget.

System Option One

- Systemax P3200 Pro
- Intel Pentium 4 540 3.2GHz LGA775 Hyperthreading processor
- Gigabyte GA-81915PC-DUO Mainboard
- 1024 mb PC-3200 DDR RAM
- Lite-on SOHW-1672S 16X Dual Layer DVD=/-RW Drive w/ Nero
- 400 Pin ATA33 IDE Cable
- 120GB Seagate Serial ATA150 HD 7200 RPM 8MB Cache
- ELSA FireGL PCIE V3100 128 DVI-I/D-SUB
- 306A Midi Tower ATX Case 4 bays w/400W P4 PSU, Side USB
- Windows XP Pro

When I send people links to the Graphics Cards certified by Alias or Softimage, they tend not to get back to me (is it difficult to get these cards?). Here's an alternative from a guy who looks like he didn't visit the links:

System Option Two

- XPC SN 84G4
- Athlon 64 bit 3000+ CPU
- 120GB SATA HDD
- 1024GB DDRAM
- 256DDRAM 9600 SE Pro Graphics Card
- Ethernet/Broadband ready (does that mean the other one isn't?)
- Dual Layer DVD Writer
- Logitech cordless mouse and keyboard
- Windows XP Pro

So that's where I'm at right now. Will either of these systems perform well with Maya, Max, Softimage or Blender? Are there any similarly priced alternative componants anyone recommends over those listed? Will these systems allow me to play games too? What additional questions should I be asking these guys?

I know Macs, but this whole build it yourself thing is kinda new to me. I'd really appreciate any suggestions from you guys.

Cheers,

-O

Hey Jody,

Thanks for the response. The first system is worth $1800 AUD (US$1430), and the second is $1600 AUD (US$1270). Far as the depth of a mac man's pockets, a guy can't borrow money from his folks forever. Besides which, I need more ugly in my life ;).

When you say both systems sound ace, do you mean you think they'll do what I need them to do? I'm struggling to navigate in PC world, and I've got one retailer telling me one thing, and another telling me the opposite.

Love your work by the way.

Cheers

If you want to play games on it then i would head over to alienware and get some REALLY ugly in your life ;) go for one of thier high end systems you will be able to play or run anything on one of those! ... it kinda depends if you want to do really REALLY high poly stuff or seriouse video editing then id get yourself a nice worksttation class comp... BUT im not sure youd have a good time playing games as drivers and graphics would prob be quite specific if on the other hand you want to do some games models and also play games at the same time then alienware is prob your best bet quite pricy but cool as hell comps... also i havnt ever actualy had the need to use a workstation so i might be wrong about not being able to play games.. but looking at your budget id say youd get a DECENT! comp from alienware.
On a seperate not id love a mac... if only they had max.. shame! they look so pretty ;)

Jody

PS and hell yehh both the systems above would perform very well with both games ant max/maya (whatever really)

while tiger direct does have pretty good prices, they're savings are for the most part in refurbished stuff, which i'm fairly sure you're not goin for :).

try www.newegg.com they sell ridiculously cheap stuff with good shipping.

as far as which system is better. i'd say the 64 bit athalon one, mostly cause that's pretty much what i use, and i freakin love it. the frontside bus of the 64bit processors is almost double that of the high end pentiums. meaning i get my shisnat faster :bounce:

I've been using a 5 button microsoft intellimouse, and a Macalley old school keyboard for ages. Mac mice and keyboards have really sucked since the designers moved in (I'm a designer, so no offence, but the physical interface has suffered). I'm on one now, and I feel like I'll break it if I'm not careful. I like a keyboard with clack!

Meantime, I'd love a badass Alienware/Boxx machine, but who's got the bucks? They out of range for the moment.

I'll look into those links guys. Thanks for the hints. Not sure though, given I'll be shipping to the other side of the planet (Melbourne, Australia Mate!) that they'll be competitive. We'll see.

Thanks gang
