Does anyone here have experience setting up network rendering with Maya?

I tried reading the documents , It talks about a software called dispacher , but i am totally lost , dont know how to set it up.

Looking forward to any help I can get.

Thanks in advance

Hey there,

If you're looking for an inexpensive and pretty powerful network rendering program, take a look at Smedge. I've had very few problems with it and I know that Robin is working on the next release which, from what I remember, is a total reworking of the code to make it even better.

You can get a free single-computer version here:
http://www.uberware.net/smedge2/

The nice thing about smedge is that you buy licenses per computer and not per CPU like most other network rendering solutions.

Just look at the command line render docs, its pretty easy to submit jobs this way and you only need the render lic to use it. If your running any kind of *nix for the couple renderboxes then it is even easier, you can just set up some batch/csh scripts to submit your renders to other machines with. Just remote login, and start the render for frames blah-blah.

I'm not really sure how obvious this question is. I havn't had any experience with network renders in Maya and I can't seem to find the answer  ...

Do I need a licence of Maya on every machine I send a render to?

since maya 3.0 rendering is free on 999 licenses per maya GUI license

You used to need to submit a request a lic request to a/w for the unlimited rendernode license, but as of maya 4.03 and higher, maya doesnt even need a the render lic anymore.

I don't believe it's networkable, but RenderPal is a utility that I have found useful along these lines. It's basically a GUI for mayabatch. I needed to render 18 scenes a couple weeks ago (on one machine)...it allows you to cue up multiple scenes to render simultaneously. www.renderpal.com is their URL i believe.

OK another question.

How do I install only the maya renderer on another machine without installing a maya licence on that machine? (I have a dongle licence)

Just install maya like normal and skip over the licensing part.

I've installed Maya on the other machine but when I run Smedge I get an error on the machine I'm rendering to saying there is no licence in c:\flexlm. This is true because I haven't installed a licence on that machine.
I also get this error message when I run mayabatch.exe with the command prompt on that machine. Obviously I can't use my dongle on both machines at once.

Can I render on the other machine without installing another licence on it?

please see the "installing maya" manual.

your local machine with the license running has to have a server running, that serves the batch render license to other machines.
(usually something like aw_myServer.dat in the flexlm folder).

in there is the port written.

to check the functionality, go to the command prompt (windows asumed) and type the following:

set lm_license_file=portNumber@server

where port number is the number in the aw_myServer.dat file on your server (usually 4-5 digits) and server is the name of your computer running the license

have fun

cheers

alexx

(p.s.: i know you can do all this using the flexlm tools - but i dont like them :)

cheers alexx. I knew I should have read the installation manual. I'll try it at work on monday.
